Microsoft are pretty happy with how the Xbox 360 is doing in Australia:
Microsoft announced today that in just the seven months since launch, Xbox 360 has sold over 100,000 consoles in Australia, making it the fastest selling videogame console [excluding handhelds] in Australian history to reach that mark.

In addition to the hardware success story, Xbox 360 software has also set a new sales record in Australia with a remarkable 400,000 games sold in the seven months since launch.
The Xbox 360, like its predecessor, seems to enjoy quite a bit of success down under.

Sony are probably going to have a bit of a battle ahead of them - the PlayStation 3 will be going up against the well-entrenched Xbox 360. The delayed release here combined with the high cost are probably big stumbling blocks.

Sony's fiercly anti-competitive stance - seen just recently as popular online gaming retailer Lik-Sang was forced to shut down - plus the whole rootkit debacle aren't doing them any favours in the eyes of the hardcore, but it's probably safe to say that these events will sneak past the mass market unnoticed (unfortunately).

I'm not surprised by this at all. The other week I was at EB preordering my Wii - just in the time I was waiting in line, four people walked out with brand new 360s.

First time I saw an Xbox 360 I was impressed with the unit, thinking oh yeah that's pretty small for what it is....and then I saw the huge powerpack for the thing.

They are still too expensive for a console in my books.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the impression that the Xbox and the 360 have both done comparitively better here in Australia versus worldwide sales; any thoughts as to why?

Well it was legal to mod them here, not sure what kind of impact that would of had.
