A press release from start of TGS states that a software update this year will enable 1080p output on your Xbox 360!

You will finally be able to experience all 60 frames per second of visuals that your 1080p HDTV can provide. Unfortunately there has been no HDMI cable yet announced so this is only over component and VGA. Even better, users can expect 1080p upscaling immediately on current games and DVDs while native 1080p on compatible HD DVD titles.

I don't have one either but I do have a 24" Dell monitor which supports 1080p. I've seen the 24" Dell monitors as low as $1000 but hopefully they'll come down even further when CMV get their 24" monitor out in a couple months. The CMV's are speculated to be about $700-$800.

too bad most tv's that even do 1080p can't do it over component. there is a big thread on this over at neogaf

180p over component isn't support, so you would assume they will be releasing a hdmi cable with the hd dvd drive...

main positive of hdmi is that it is needed for the upcoming HDCP.

you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference between component and hdmi. Why would you want to buy $100 cable that will probably not give you any difference...analog signal has more throughput since it's not sampled...right?

I think MS has already announced that HDMI cable is already coming though.

$100 for a 8-10 meter HDMI cable maybe.

HDMI is getting pimped so hard because A) its digital so its better looking than component (but no better than DVI)

Component is Digital at the higher resolutions from memory. So in theory either should show the same quality, perhaps latency and the occasional bad bit could edge one over the other, but only marginally.

HDMI is the same basic digital signal as DVI-D and requires just a simple ( but expensive ) adaptor to change between and all it does is reroute the pins to suit the connectors, i.e. plug DVI-D monitor into HDMI console.

I thought it could already do this.

My HD-STB has DVI out and it just runs straight to a HDMI connecter, I was told that HDMI = DVI + Sound.

That post was from september, the update that adds 1080p support happened a couple of months ago :)

I gotta say I'm feeling pretty ripped from MS right now. The week before last I went out and bought a brand new 46" Sony Bravia LCD TV and a Xbox 360.. This week we find out that they are gonna put out a 360 with HDMI support.. So That's fine you might say but turns out my Bravia dosen't support 1080P via component cables.. So the only way I could get the Xbox to run in 1080P would be to upgrade to there soon to be released Xbox Ver2. Cool thanks M$ for that.

no, there will be a hdmi xbox360 cable.

this was always going to be a given since they announced the hd dvd drive.

since component and composite isn't a secure medium, when using the HD dvd drive with these cables the quality of the movie/media will be dropped down to 480p or there abouts.

the only way to get the full quality output from hd dvd media is to use a hdmi cables from end to end otherwise no security tokens hence they needed to release one otherwise what is the point of a hd dvd drive.

nidz, sorry to disappoint you, but your bravia doesn't display 1080p anyway.

read the fine print, it only says that it "accepts a 1080p signal". it says that it's a 1920x1080 resolution panel. nowhere does it say that i will do this resolution in progressive scan. they imply, but never state it. whereas other brands that actually do that resolution state it loud and proud.

sony were very devious about this one. sorry to burst your bubble, but that's what you get for bragging in your first post :)

As opposed to tubes, microdisplays (DLP, LCoS, and LCD rear-projection) and other fixed-pixel TVs, including plasma and LCD flat-panel, are inherently progressive in nature, so when the incoming source is interlaced, as 1080i is, they convert it to progressive scan for display.

even if that is correct, which it probably is as cnet is pretty decent, a deinterlaced signal still isn't as good as a native progressive signal.

it's the same physical panel as the samsung 46" LA46F, but the processor etc is all different, hence the difference in capabilities
