I really think the French are clutching at straws here but -

A FRENCH lawyer plans to ask a court to intervene in the controversy over Zinedine Zidane's sending-off in the World Cup final.

Doubts over whether a match official relied on video evidence of Zidane's head butt to Italy defender Marco Materazzi means the final should be replayed, said lawyer Mehana Mouhou overnight.

FIFA rules prevent referees from using video evidence during the course of a match.

its unfortunate but rules are rules, FIFA rules say where a technical error happens which affects the result of the game a rematch can be forced. Hardpressed proving that the offical used a video monitor, but if he can, i guess FIFA has to honour their rules and re-play the game.

I find it hugely unlikely that FIFA would bother. Except for the fact that it would give them a chance to make even more fat loots, but I can't see any universe in which Italy would agree to play again. Also, lawyers are asshats.

the one thing it would do is push fifa to look towards a video referee as an option, or somehow prevent the 4th official from looking at screens (coz the main ref and the linesmen should be watching the game, amirite?) which they would be hardpressed to do.

hopefully it somehow signals a move towards video refs for thin line decisions

This is highly uncharacteristic of the French to be putting up a fight.

If the shoe was on the other foot, Italy lawyers would try and get them to replay it, where the French would refuse to replay. It's f***ing dumb that they would even consider it.

edit: I also doubt it would be replayed due to a ref sending someone off.

edit2: Even if it was replayed, it wouldn't have anywhere near the hype as the first. If Italy were to win the second one, it would still be anti-climatical, and barely anyone would really give a s*** by then.

if they can find that materazzi was a malevolent instigator (and hes up for a 2 match ban + 6000 euro fine atm) then it could be replayed under that logic, ie zidane was only retaliating.


but yeah, it just seems dodgy that an official that didnt see it happen, had to watch the replay and then come on to send him off.

especially when fifa are so adamant about not using video footage in judgements during the game

Apparently its not right for someone who had seen this on video footage to come on and send him off. Lame, but its the rules.

I heard using racist language is a red card, so if the abuse included racism Materazzi should've been sent off, and that means someone else would've been up for a pentalty kick.

But deliberately falling over is also frowned apon, and we all know who that means should've won! Australia!

All in all depsite all the controversy it was a disappointing world cup to say the least. No major upsets from the underdogs, few great goals, a lot of top players out of form, bad calls from the refs and an abundance of divers and cheaters.

If the frenchies get another go at Italy, so should we!
