I assume several/many of us will be getting up to watch this game in the early hours. Two teams that have come into good form (particlarily defensively for Italy and in attack for the French) but with a lot of pressure on them. Should be a good game but as always there is the threat of one team cracking on such a big stage.

What are people doing for the game, anyone know if Park rd is being shut down again as it was said they might?

Disappointing end (not because Italy won, but because it was penalty shootouts) but was a pretty good game. I thought France was playing slightly better, although they just lost the ball too many times up the front.

Rub what in, the fact that all those stupid wankers in FORN parts whose only knowledge about Australia is that we ride kangaroos to school now might realise that we can play soccer cuz we made it into the round of 16?!

The obvious conclusion from this morning's events is Australia could have won the World Cup. Although we prolly wouldn't have baited Zidane into smashing one of our players thus removing one of their best strikers from the pitch because we're not cheats. BAM!

This is where we need the animated gif of Zidane headbutting. I really want to find out what was said to him to make him lash out. news.com.au is already saying he's 'ended his career in disgrace' (why I still read that piece of s*** website is a mystery to me).

It probably doesn't need to be said but Park rd went off during the penalty shoot out. So good becuase Dimo, another mate and I were all going for Italy and we got caught it the middle of the French supporters for maost of the game. Thankfully we found our way into the Italians when the shoot out started. Still can't believe Zidane, for one of the greatest players of our time (if not the greatest) to have such a brain explosion in his final game with such importance riding on it. I knew he could be an angry man but Woah!

I can't believe how many chances France wasted. In the second half they had so much possession space and field position, but they wasted such a massive advantage with terrible shots. It was like they just assumed they weren't going to get through Italy's defense even though they had runners and space, so they just decided to get off rushed shots from anywhere.

Yeh they sure did, I ended up WTFing half the time they had the ball. It wasn't just their shots that were atrocious either, some of their passing was just completely woeful.

^ They had more possession, and most of the game was played in the Italian half but rarely did France get within the 18 yard box without a defender (or two) in the way.

btw - Totti didn't impress me at all, I was surprised he was on as long as he was before being substituted.

Also - I think France's direct at the start was another dive. One of the replays clearly showed the Italian jumping out of the way (with his hands up) before the Frenchman dived. I thought it was genuine until one of several replays showed it from behind...

the two most cowardly nations in the worlds history meet each other in the World Cup final, Zidane's headbutt settled the argument. Italy won the title for biggest soft cocks and also won the world cup.

Dissapointing isn't the right word. It wasn't the greatest football but it was pretty much what I expected in a world cup final with so much pressure on the players. Knowing the result won't make the replay great to watch, but live wondering how it was going to turn out was great.

I thought it was good to finally see Italy win a penalty shootout in a world cup. Kind of justice given how many times they've lost out in the past with a system that is almost a lottery being used..... also made it better to see them win given many were anticipating they would f*** up at that stage.

But who should have?
Germany? - Italy outplayed them in the semi.
Portugal? - No way
Australia? - Ha
Argentina? Brazil? Spain? - All faltered at crucial stages.
In the end no team dominated the whole tournament but Italy and France did enough to get there and hit form at the right time.

That game was pretty crap. Glad I didn't go out for it. France looked like the better team, but often Italy is happy to have less possesion making them look like they are on the back foot, when in reality nothing is going to get past their defence.

I think it's a shame that the game came down to the shoot out, but then I also think it's a shame that there aren't video replays.

Does anyone have a replay of the bit of the Oz Italy match where Neil fouled?

when his team was outplaying the Italians in every aspect

Not EVERY aspect of the game. There was that one minor aspect of scoring goals which they failed at. Which is why they lost.

Italy failed at it as well - that's why they had to resort to being c*********s to get Zidane sent off to force the game to a penalty shootout.

I don't consider winning a soccer game by penalty shootout a victory. If I was in a team that won by shootout I wouldn't feel like I'd done anything special - I'd feel bad that we had to resort to such a cheap way to win.

edit: nb: I would feel the same way if France (or Australia) had won the World Cup. Penalty shootouts are boring.

and trog, you shouldnt be sent off for headbutting someone? You'd probably even be sent off doing that in aerial ping pong. I think rugby is the only game you'd really get away with it. I'd also appreciate if you didn't refer to them as c*********s. They did score the only goal in the game, fair and sqaure.

FIFA would have made a bit, but the amount of money pumped into the German economy from tourists and fans I reckon would blow your mind. I spent over $1200 just on hotels (I was there for maybe 10 days). Food, beer, transport, beer, tourist stuff, beer and beer all would add up to quite a bit.

Just watching sbs news now and apparently lip readers were hired to find out what materazzi said to provoke zidane. It turns out that materazzi apparently finished off all his insults by wishing death upon zidane's family. Zidane's mother was also supposedly seriously sick at the time.
