Hey all. Just playing a bit of bf2 tonight and wanted the latest version so I downloaded the patch. After the patch was applied whenever I try and play bf2 it'll go to a black screen, load for a little while, and then quit back to desktop.

winxp
some ati card (latest drivers)
directx 9
amd cpu (don't know how fast)

If anything else is relevant tell me and I'll post it up. Hopefully this is a common problem with an easy fix.

that was the problem i got.. seems some files were missing from the upgrade.

Download the full
uninstall Special Forces
uninstall BF2
Update your graphics drivers if you aren't on newies
install bf2
install SF
install full 1.2 patch

The next day i played i had problems with disconnections within 60seconds of getting on any server.

Update punkbusters
delete the 'cache' folder off My Games\BF2\something\something\cache

then it worked.

Sounds like your having a resolution, refresh rate problem. The game is aborting because it cant render the display.

Try the following -

1. Start the game from the autorun on the original cd.

if that doesnt work

2. Start the game from the bf2.exe and not the shortcut as I beleive there may be switches in the shortcut to set resolution and refresh rate so you want to bypass those.

if that doesnt work

3. rename this file \My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\ to something like \My Documents\Battlefield 2\OLD_Profiles\ and then start the game from the cd.

This will reset your game to the default settings.

Once you get the game started retrieve your profile, and re-adjust
the graphics settings using the Menu as normal and then the game should start properly from now on.

Let me know if nothing fixes it.

From EA;s support site.

Question

Why do I experience graphical corruption, missing buildings, or crashing after updating to patch 1.2?
Answer

Although the v1.2 patch was tested with the supported video chipsets, certain unsupported chipsets react to the update with graphical corruption, missing buildings, and even crashing. This seems to occur especially with the ATI 92XX series of video cards. Although these cards have never been officially supported, they did work previous to the patch and the appropriate teams are looking for a solution to resolve these issues.

For your reference, the supported video card list is included below:

* ATI Radeon X700 (PCIe), X600 (PCIe), X800 XT Platinum Edition, X800 PRO, and X300 series.
* ATI Radeon 9800 series, 9700 series, 9600 series, 9559 (RV350LX), 9500 series, and 8500 series.
* NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (PCIe), and PCX 5900 (PCIe).
* NVIDIA GeForce 5800 series (AGP).
* NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra, 6800 GT, and 6800.
* NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 series, FX 5900 series, and FX 5700 series.

It is also recommended that you keep your video card drivers up to date to prevent these issues.

That being said I do defineately recall a pretty big post my EA about fixing the issue with the game crashing after applying the incremental patch. Basically they gave a detailed method of uninstalling everything and then re-installing it all over again. Apparently that is the only way to really fix the issue. It went in to detail about deleting windows temp files because the patch leaves files behind that are 're-used' again during the re-install and will still screw your game.

I'll try to dig up the thread I read it in.

You can manually uninstall the game by removing the files and registry keys associated with it. Be sure to follow these steps exactly as they appear to prevent accidental file/program deletion on your system.

To delete the save files:

1.
Open My Documents.
2.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.

To delete the game files (in the default location):

1.
Open My Computer.
2.
Open the C drive.
3.
Open the Program Files folder.
4.
Open the EA GAMES folder.
5.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
6.
Close all open windows.
7.
Right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

To edit the registry and remove Battlefield 2:

1.
Click on the Start button.
2.
Click on Run.
3.
Type regedit in the text field.
4.
Click File and then choose Export.
5.
Name the file Backup and make sure the Export Range is set to All.
6.
Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
7.
Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
8.
Click the plus sign next to Software.
9.
Click the plus sign next to DICE.
10.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
11.
Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
12.
Right-click and choose Delete on any Battlefield 2 folders.
13.
Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
14.
Click the plus sign next to Windows.
15.
Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
16.
Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
17.
Right-click on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B} andchoose Delete.
18.
A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
19.
Close the WindowsRegistry Editor.

Mate, I'd try the other suggestions first, if they don't help I would delete the whole thing, re-install the game and grab the FULL patch rather than the incremental and fingers crossed you'll be fragging again.

I have definitely heard about lots of problems with the incremential patch. If you're having problems after using it first thing I'd try is downloading the phat full patch and seeing if that magically fixes them.
