This weekend Valve is inviting everyone to try Day of Defeat: Source for free via Steam. Visit Steampowered.com to pre-load the game and be set to play at 12:00 pm PST on Friday, when the Free Weekend begins. Join the ranks as Axis or Allies troops located in Western Europe during the height of the war in 1944. For more information, visit www.steampowered.com.
Looks like the DOD servers are going to get hammered this weekend. promoted forum item

funnily enough I bought this via steam a day or two ago to give it a bash and it is pretty damn good, but then again I have no baseline to bitch about as i never played the original DOD. But it certainly plays well enough and the maps are pretty good as well.

A rehashed version of an originally FREE mod, free for a weekend.

Wow, Valve is so charitable!

yeah i know its only multiplayer but what game modes do they have given cod2 now has ctf, sd and hq all in one.

interesting to note they did not bring domination through into cod2 althogh it was included in unitied offensive.

how does it feel, faster than cod2?

just download it and give it a shot this weekend.

i have been playing it consistently since the day it came out, it f***en rox.

only one game mode, cap all the flags (domination). playing as rifleman/assault is fast with heaps of action, but i usually go machinegunner and assault with it. its fkn awesome feeling setting up in a tricky spot and annihilating 5 guys in 0.2 seconds with the mg42.

its a good game i believe its better then dod 1. If you are with telstra or internode it wont use your cap as you are downloading from there server. I belive it worth the download. I bought the silver pack from steam just so i would get dod source when it came out and i am happy with it. except for my gf4 who produces 10fps

Paying like $20 for a game that a LOT of people are huge fans of, with a very active multiplayer community? MAN FUKKEN VALVE ARE f***ING US RIGHT NOW GUYS!

Jesus f***ing christ. Listen to yourself you pieces of s***. You complain about every f***ing thing.

"I don't wanna have to pay for a mod that, years ago, was free!" - Lets not forget the large amount of work that Valve have put into it to making it better, graphically and gameplay-wise. And the amount you pay is a quarter of what you would pay to buy most games on sale in EB right now.

"So, you mean it's ONLY free for 2 days? f*** THAT! Valve are such ripoff c***s! What a scam man, to give me a free, no-limit demo for 48 hours, and then ask me to pay for it to continue playing, that's a waste of my download cap!". - a) I'm sure Gamearena (or your ISP free-download network) will have a mirror of it somewhere. Either way, would you prefer that they ask you to pay, without having the opportunity to try the game?

I would f***ing hate to work at Valve. While I haven't played this game, I can't believe that you pieces of s*** are actually COMPLAINING because a company is giving you a free trial of their software.

Go f*** yourselves.

Nah you can preload now ... took me a while to figure out HOW after roaming the Steam forums.

Click the DoD advertisement in the steam window, it will open up your web browser .. then in the browser click the "Preload now" (or similar) thing on the DoD promo page, which will go back and tell Steam to pre-load it. Great system that!

Well, as a gamer, I've come to expect game demos. What Valve are doing is taking away your ability to evaluate a game on your terms and giving you a 2 day window in which to do it in. I don't think that is particularly cool - a demo is an ADVERTISEMENT for your game. If you make a decent demo, zillions of people are going to want to check it out, then a percentage of those people will go off to buy your game.

An unrestricted one-map demo (like in RTCW) and other payment options would have been good.

Otherwise my experience is currently like this:

1. Download 800MB time-limited DoD:S trial, despite having purchased both HL1 Platinum Pack and HL2 at the store.
2. Play trial for 2 days, have potential fun.
3. Trial now invalid, 800MB quota down the drain.
4. Attempt to purchase DoD:S, but don't have credit card. Other payment options (cash at a store, direct deposit, cheque, money order) not accepted.
5. Can't play DoD at all, down 800MB. Purchase a different developer's game instead.

Though they haven't jumped on the StarForce bandwagon, so I must give them credit for that!

They probably saw that guild wars did a similar thing and went "hey thats a cool idea lets do it as well". Also developers don't care how big the download is because australia is the only f***ing country to have download quotas.

I was speaking to a Swedish guy a while back, discussing the difference between internet plans here and over there.

At one stage, he stopped me mid-sentence to ask "What's a download quota?"

lol pharcyde.

Bottom line, you noobs should have got the silver pack of the internets and it would be win win.
It was like 60-70 bucks when CS:S was released and you got every game/mod valve have ever released to do with HL and HL2. Thats f***ing good value if you ask me, considering all the times ive gone to EB and wasted 90-100 bucks on much less.

True, but I think the fundamental thing about this kind of deal, is that it's not really (at least, from what I can see) being pitched as a "Demo" to evaluate the software on - it's just a free trial. As in, "Should I spend $20 on DoD:S?... well, theres a trial weekend coming up, I'll give it a shot, if I like it, I'll buy it to continue playing".

Guild Wars did the same thing, and it worked fantastically.

I think it's pretty hard to release a demo for evaluation purposes for a game like this (IE: Multiplayer only) without just giving you a free copy, because the only way you can play the game is online, in full. Anything else won't actually be the game. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'm tired as f***.

Why is it hard? Heaps of other companies manage to do it just fine. Release only ONE unrestricted map like I said, and a demo-playing community will form and play for months, advertising the game for you.

The easiest way would be to strip out game data (textures, audio) that do not belong to the one released map. I've done enough level-editing and [other] modding to know that this is possible in a relatively short time-frame.

Will give this game a shot regardless, as the guys at work swear by DoD:S.

The funny thing is that would have been 1/4 of the game at release time, I didn't even realise there was only 4... yes 4 maps when I first bought the thing! It is one reason I stopped playing, 4 maps gets boring pretty quick. They did release 1 other new map before Kalt but it sucked ass IMO.

Ok, so I've been having a bash on this for the last 90min or so. It took about 10min to work out how to play it but then I was chopping away like the old days :)

Its fun, fast paced action. Brings back memories.

I couldnt think of anything worse than being forced to play 1 map continuously, and would much prefer to play the entire thing for a few days before plunking down for the game. If you dont know if you are willing to purchase something after having an entire weekend to play the game, then you werent willing to buy the game in the first place or are just hard up for cash.

Deliberately crippling software/games for demo purposes annoys me and Im glad valve decided to go down the time based route.

For some of us, 2 days isn't enough time to decide whether a game will last in the long-term. If I am still having fun playing the one map after a week, and still learning new strategies, then I can be pretty sure that buying a retail copy (soon) with more maps/content will have heaps of potential in long-term play.

For example, I just gave DoD:s a shot and I really don't like it, but I'm sure if I tried again after some time I might get into it (just like I did with CS and NS).
If you dont know if you are willing to purchase something after having an entire weekend to play the game, then you werent willing to buy the game in the first place or are just hard up for cash.

The retail boxes on my shelf say otherwise. I played some of them for weeks before purchasing a copy.

Well then you're a minority, but still entitled to your opinion.

People buy cars and houses in a smaller time frame than you need to make an informed computer game purchase apparently. Why would valve need to foster an online demo community like you are asking for in replying to another poster when then they need to spend time locking/removing assets when they already have a huge online fps community already in DOD:S plus its other mods and an online distribution system in place for the game.

I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that I am in a minority because I dislike crippled software but thanks for pointing out I'm entitled to an opinion, you had me worried there for a second ;)

Just a glance at the number of full BF2 and RTCW (to name just two) servers in the in-game browser of the demos back around the time they were released.

Your rationale is pretty flawed, just because people are playing free demo's of games doesnt mean crippled demos are more popular than time based ones.

I'll come back in 3 weeks time and see if you've made a decision to purchase dod:s yet :)

Well, I've been having a great time playing DoD this weekend. I'd prolly go and buy it now except that this weekend has also shown some problems. The game seems to attract a high ratio of tards / normal players. The game appears to undermanned as far as gameops go. We had servers being over run with AFK players (full server and no way of kicking the AFK players) and we also had a few absolute idiots who spammed the mic with very loud annoying sounds and spammed the screen with raciest comments, web links and god knows what else. Not an admin or gameop in sight and no way of kicking them. At least in BF2, if your AFK, your auto kicked, and if you miss behave, the other players can decide to vote kick you. DoD should have these tools available since its been around for so long.

Its a shame, because when things are running smooth, the game play is fun and fast paced.

You do realise these tards are playing because it's free and their mums don't need to pay for them to play. It was probably the free aspect that attracted the tards, not the fact that DoDS attracts them.

Biggest problem I found was that there are always a bunch of "progaymers" on most servers that have played hours everyday since the game was released. Plus the tard/MG camper factor, I do agree with that completely.

That means for the nubes and returning players like myself whom are just above nube status it gets pretty frustrating to try and compete with them. They know the accuracy and spread of fire of each weapon back to front so even if you do land a non lethal shot you've been capped in the head before you even get a chance to pop another shot off.

I do like the game, but its rare to find a server these days for any game with decent people to have an enjoyable game.

These days I find myself getting more enjoyment out of singleplayer games. Like at the mo NHL 06 and NBA 06 have been keeping me entertained when I do actually have some spare time to kill.

obviously this weekend was full of absolute tards, i have never seen dod servers so desecrated with wankers before.

it seems they used this weekend as just chance to make trouble, with no intention of buying the game. for the first time ever in dod:s, i saw someone hacking. they were using speed hax and running around capping all the flags before you had a chance to practially get out of your spawn.

other than that, people were just being f***heads; blocking doorways and just trying to disrupt the game in any way they could. they didnt care if they were gonna get banned from the servers cos they werent gonna have the game after the weekend anyway.

so yeah ET, its usually not like that. hopefully the servers are back to normal now.
