A stampede that has killed at least 345 people has sparked calls for better management of the annual hajj Muslim pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The disaster occurred as more than two million pilgrims pressed to take part in the "stoning the devil" ritual, a rite that has cost hundreds of lives in stampedes in the past.

The pilgrims were trampled to death and at least 300 were injured as they scrambled to hurl stones at three pillars symbolising the devil in the valley of Mina, east of the holy city of Mecca.

Yeah i've been reading a big debate about this over on the relic forums but what I still don't get is why they don't make this an everyday sort of event so that 2 million+ people won't try to pack into one tiny place all on the same day.

Even religions need to modernise their beliefs or things like this will happen.

It's obvious he's saying "muslims are dumb" or something

No reason the yearly pilgrimage can't go on, they just need to upgrade the crappy facilities because this happens every year

for those who need it explained to them, if you're dumb enough to venture to a dangerously overcrowded location to throw some stones at a pillar then you should be removed from the gene pool, but thankfully they've taken care of that themselves, and perhaps those who need it expained to them should do the same.

They didn't know they were entering an area where people die every year, all in the name of throwing stones at pillar which are supposed to represent the devil.

I don't think it's funny at all Tung, people are uneccesarily dying when it could be avoided by a small revision to the practice.

Soccer matches and others where stuff like this happened have been modifying their security practices so as to limit or stop this happening again, why not do so for something like this?

I heard something about this on the radio a few days ago saying how they had taken steps to make sure no onewas killed this year as, in the past, they have had big issues with it.

I guess the devil ruined their measures to stop it happening...

Ive never been to 'arabia' but I saw similar behaviour in India. I guess its a similar thing to the mob in cronulla or whatever. Big group of people bounces off eachother until they dont really have their s*** together anymore. I think it would be alot worse in these countries, for whatever reason, because in india I have seen just small groups go bats*** over car crashes that didnt even involve them, let alone the chance to stone the devil :P

I would be very intersted to see exactly what causes things like this to happen. If it has anything to do with social standards (religion, education, custom etc) or if its just totally situational.

If God was indeed merciful he would have upgraded the fallen with AK-47s to clear a path.
