FasterFox is a new Firefox extension which apparently speeds up Firefox. Looks like it just tweaks a bunch of those things that people have mentioned before (connection numbers, etc). I get a noticable speed increase, but it could smash webservers by the looks.

Is Firefox worth using? I never have issues with IE and how much stuffing around is there to get the links across as well.

I've been using it for a few months. It's pretty good except for ONE site which rejects me (despite using conservative settings):
http://www.dnsstuff.com Try to perform a whois (or someting else) from within that site and you get: FORBIDDEN: Pre-fetching abuses our website. I haven't bumped into any other problems though :) |

f*** me. Firefox is way quicker than IE when I'm browsing QGL. Although I don't like the way it scrolls down sorta jerky like. I'll give it a go for a while and see what happens but so far I'm impressed with the speed.
Gonne check some porn sites to see if they load quicker. LOL |

Although I don't like the way it scrolls down sorta jerky like Turn off "Use Smooth Scrolling" in Options->Advanced. Then install the SmoothWheel plugin: http://smoothwheel.mozdev.org/ Scrolling with the mousewheel now becomes extremely smooth and pleasant :) |

tools->options->advanced->browsing->use smooth scrolling No, no. It's much better to turn OFF the in-built "Use smooth scrolling" and install the 3rd party plugin instead. The in-built smoothscroller is jerky and crap compared to that plugin. Try it and see. It's the first plugin I install on fresh installs of Firefox :) last edited by parabol at 12:49:33 29/Dec/05 |

so what are some other useful firefox plugins? Adblock plugin, using Pierceive's filter set (2005-12-11a.txt) FireFTP (useful upload/download FTP client) MediaPlayerConnectivity (allows videos to open in another program with 1 click, instead of needing an in-browser plugin to view them. Also allows direct links to videos to be extracted easily) CuteMenus (nice cosmetic improvement to right-click menu) |

By the way, with FasterFox I'd suggest altering the Initial Paint Delay (Rendering tab) down from the default of 250 ms to something like 50 ms. (but not 0 ms, as that will cause several initial repaints and make it a little slower than having the slight delay)

yeah i installed the later build and it bypasses the profile or something (thus it didn't show up in extension). so i installed the earlier one which deleted over it i am guessing. one day it will crash and i will delete all of the gadgets and start again.

While we're on the topic of extensions, here's another good one for people that have access to their net usage data as an XML feed - it allows you to customise your toolbar (right click on the toolbar and select "Customize...") and drop on a usage bar that displays how much you've used and have remaining in the current month, etc.
DownThemAll! is also good for grabbing images from dir listings, forums, etc and you can filter for different file types (movies, documents, images) and so on. |

Under Linux, I can only perform a whois using Courteous or Default settings.
Under Windows, I can't even view the MAIN dnsstuff.com page if it's on Turbo Charged, much less be able to even attempt a whois :/ |

why would you even want to use a website for whois in linux? just go to a command prompt and type whois blah.com. Worked on my linux box anyway, slackware I think.

why would you even want to use a website for whois in linux? I wouldn't. The point is, there were early claims that optimising Firefox's network settings would lead to problems and/or bannage from sites. I used to think that claim was BS until I came across that site. Luckily, it's merely one out of thousands of sites I've visited, so it's not much of an issue =) I've posted too much in this thread. /out |

Does this plugin optimise your firefox for a broadband connection? Would it be worth me grabbing it since I use ISDN? I don't want it to f*** up my firefox and actually make it load slower or something because its trying to open heaps of connections at once or something crazy.
Also, another Firefox worth getting imo is Flashgot. I use it heaps, pretty much when I download anything that allows the use of a download manager, especially when theres a few files I wan't because I can just pass them to Flashgot which then queues them up in Getright and downloads them one at a time in a nice orderly fashion. If theres a list of files on the page, you can even highlight all the text on the page and tell Flashgot to parse it for links and grab all the files it finds, that came in really handy when I was sucking down lecture notes and sample code for uni off our student portal (because apparently my programming lecturer doesn't believe in zipping). |

I don't want it to f*** up my firefox and actually make it load slower or something because its trying to open heaps of connections at once or something crazy The Options menu gives you several choices: * Default: Restore all settings to their non-optimised Firefox default values. * Courteous: Rendering tweaks only, does not increase server load. * Optimised: Network optimisations for increased performance within the RFC specs. * Turbo Charged: Maximum performance, exceeds RFC Specs. * Custom On top of that, you could even uninstall it if it's not to your liking. There's not much to lose trying ... |

Sif this extension is new =P
Ps, the only real difference between optimised and turbo charged is a ff will attempt a few more connections (network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 6 vs 8), which really wouldn't put that much extra load on any web server, seeing as some people have been using upwards of 16 in firefox tweak guides. PPS, don't use the 'advanced prefetching' option unless you don't care about bandwidth, or feel like adding every image heavy site to the exclude list. In an earlier build I watched firefox chew threw a few hundred megabytes in a few minutes. Also, like someone said earlier, some sites take a low view of this as it's very much like shoddy web spiders and leeching bots. last edited by eXemplar at 03:53:36 30/Dec/05 |

Me either (pics saving). Very slight delay (almost like a hiccup) when I select the option from right click but nothing I would have noticed without someone having a massive problem with it.
I don;t have adblock installed on this machine tho, could be something to do with that? I knwo it chucks some stuff into the FF's right-click menu. Awesome thread - thanks for FasterFox and that smooth scrolling s***! |

maybe it's flashgot?
i'll talk you through what happens so you can test it i right click on the 'post reply' image on this forum and select 'save image as' i hit enter straight away to save it in to the default directory as default name it then sloooooooowly pops up the download manager and then eventually it saves the file and then the 'one file downloaded' or whatever pops up down the bottom right of my screen and then the mouse pointer goes from the sand-timer to normal pointer and i can continue all up it takes between 5-10 seconds to save the 'post reply' image on this forum from once i've chosen its name and hit enter. the same thing happens if the 'downloads' mini window is already up (as it was during this test) so it's not a case of it taking a while to open the new window. This is on a dual core x64 w/ 2gig of ram, and happened on my single core x64 as well so it's not a dual core thing. |
