I'm looking at a Viewsonic VX924 19", it's around $600 but apparently it kicks ass. I know you're looking for 17" under $400 but just thought I'd chuck that out there. Maybe it's worth saving up for, what why I know?!

Anyone know if the acer 1992 is a 6 or 8 bit screen?

urrr, normally they're 16 or 24bit screens... I believe...

Acer's are ok... but as with all acer gear, its inexpensive at the expense of not being "super" awesome quality... And Acer's QA takes it in the anus. We had a whole batch of them come in with faulty firmware lolololol.

On a serious note, Samsung / Viewsonic / Philips / Sony etc... go for good brands like that.

Mongie when referring to LCD panels the number of levels that each color can render is used instead of the total number of colors presented.

But are they any good??

Could people post stuff about what they've actually used, or even some handy reviews rather than just posting price lists and brands? I already know the gamedude site kthx.

Samsung 740N (8ms, 17") <$340, Available in Silver or Black

This is an awsome screen especially for the price (However a 12ms 19" version could be had for around $460~). I dont own one, however i own an earlier 12ms version - the 710N, and am extremly happy with it. As for the 740N, i am not just recommending it from its specs, i have used one thoroughly and it bypassed all of my expectations.

I have a BenQ FP937, which is just a bigger version of the 17" (clearly) and its been nothing but excellent, very nice image quality, no dead pixels. Very nice for the price.

I noticed on the umart site they have a samsung 4ms one for $399.(the 730BF) Anyone used one of these? Is 4ms instead of 8ms worth the price difference?

Also, the 730BF has DVI input... is there much difference in quality between DVI and analog?

dvi is a lot better in quality and oyu dont have to f*** around chanting the size of the screen because its digital, just get that monitor and be done with it

I think most LCDs these days come with DVI in. DVI does make a differance to your picture quality, and LCDs do auto resize with VGA as well, not just DVI.

Samsung is a good brand, im not sure about that particular model.

Becarefull with the 8-4ms details make sure you do your homework, 4ms is mostly quoted grey to grey response timings. 8-)

Also check for 6 bit and 8 bit.

clickable version of the above link
f a monitor is rated at 1280x1024, what happens if you run it at other res'z? doesn't it look like ass?

If you run resolutions lower than its native res then yeah, they look like ass. Because it has that exact number of pixels as the native res it needs to interpolate that resolution from those pixels.

^^ so does that mean LCD's are crap for games if your video card can't handle 1280x1024? (sorry for the thread hijack, doesn't seem necessary to make an entire thread on this 1 question though)
