well the old lady has told me that she's not going to pay for optusnet cable anymore because of the cost ($80/m) or whatever it is, so i'm forced to look for something cheaper. can someone recommend me an ISP (adsl or something like that) for around $60 a month with reasonable speeds, reliability and around the same data allowance per month (12gig)
Thanks for your help in advance. and before i get told to go to Broadband choice i was just interested in your guys opinions about isp companies. It's all well and good to throw what you want in a webpage and it spits out companies but there are so many out these days that I don't know if half of them are good or not. |

iinet rock
60 bucks a month, 5gig/5gig peak, off peak 50 bucks a month, 10gig/10gig 1500/256, upgradeable to 8000/1000 if your area supports it but you pay 30 bucks a month line rental |

Well, you can read whirlpool's broadband survey here if you want to get a quick feel for what people think about the different major ISPs.
I usually recommend iiNet or Internode as they are the most competitive and won't try to screw you over with changes in terms and conditions. If iiNet makes changes to their plans, they usually allow people to stay on their old ones. So yeah: iiNet: 1.5Mbit-8Mbit (10GB peak + 10GB offpeak) @ $50 if you bundle Internode: 512Kbit (15GB quota) @ $50 Just stay away from Telstra unless you want to be shafted in the near future. |

Internode for the win.
HOME-512-Value $49.95 512k / 128k 15 GB Internode have possibly been the best ISP I have ever dealt with, their service is always fast and I am yet to have a dropout in the 7 months that I have had it, the staff are helpful and friendly as well. |

spook, that was for his price range, he could always spend $150 like me and get 1.5/256 unlimited.
Internode is also going to have 24000/1000, its available in some areas but not many, but they are updating all the time! |

internode are actually cheaper on their own exchanges than on telstra ones (24Mbit costs < than 1.5Mbit) so, keep an eye out for when they do your exchange.

keep an eye out for when they do your exchange. Internode has ADSL2+ friendly hardware in only 4 exchanges, soon to cover another 40 or so. iiNet covers 90, and about to cover another 120. So I don't think I'll take Internode seriously until they can offer high-speed access to more than 300 people :) |

parabol, I have read (it could be wrong, it was from another forum) that internodes 24000mbs equipment is costing more than what the 8000/12000 stuff iinet is rolling out. Also I asked a internode rep on wp about it, and he reckoned that they are rolling out hard and fast come july, so hopefully that is acurate.

Eds. There is no such thing as hard and fast roll outs as Internode aren't the ones installing the DSLAMS. Tel$tra have to do it, and most of the exchanges are in SA.
I completely agree with Internode having awesome after sales service however service is not something I require. I think anyone with half a clue would be mad NOT to go with IINET. |

Internode for the win. You can't beat quality.
Just as a side note, they have s***loads of free content which I have been taking advantage of LOTS - http://adsl.internode.on.net/unmetered Correct me if I'm wrong but iinet doesn't provide that. I've downloaded the WoW patches and videos, other game trailers, steam content and listened to Chronix Radio all without ticking over my quota. Also, there's no worrying about whether you're on peak or off peak times, just get on, do your thing and enjoy it. |

where is the unlimited or flatrate plans You're joking right? They scrapped their 256, 512 plans and offer only 1.5-8Mbit at pretty much the same price, and you expect them to offer unlimited plans at this high speed when most other companies don't offer unlimited even at 256 or 512 without some sort of AUP or shaping. Wake up buddy! Correct me if I'm wrong but iinet doesn't provide that Maybe you didn't bother actually trying to look: ftp://ftp.iinet.net.au There are your game patches, trailers, some linux distributions. Yes, it's not updated as aggressively or as extensive as other ISPs FTP servers, but hey, you get so much quota that it's usually less hassle to get them off non-free servers than search the FTP. Oh, and http://trance.ii.net -- several streams to choose from: trance, dnb, jazz, classical, psytrance, alt.rock, chronixradio, virgin radio, vocal trance. All free currently. there's no worrying about whether you're on peak or off peak times You do know the whole idea about off-peak time, yes? They give it to you for free as most people don't even use the internet at that time. Think of it as a bonus. Don't believe me? iinet: 1500/256 -- 5GB peak + 5GB offpeak -- $59.95 Internode: 1500/256k -- 5 GB -- $59.95 Notice how iiNet just gives you an extra 5GB because they can and doesn't cost them that much? You're telling me you'd prefer to stick with just 5GB than 10GB? OK. Each to their own. [/iinet_pimp_#2005133] Usually an admin steps in to lock at this stage *shrugs* |

Um, internode's flatrate allows you to download around 30gig ever 7 days without being slowed down and that also applies to internodes 1.5-12000 plan.
Spook , I honestly couldnt see a plan with iinet that isnt capped to some pissass speed after a certain amount. I think ill stick with my near unlimited and not shaped to dialup speeds internet connection with awesome staff and heaps of free content. |

see a plan with iinet that isnt capped to some pissass speed 64kbps? Which just happens to be the same speed that Internode cap you at? Nice one! So a month of Internode Flatrate would be like this? Day 01-07: Download 30 GB Day 08-15: Shaped to 64kbps Day 16-22: Download 30GB Day 23-29: Shaped to 64kbps Day 30-31: -repeat- So each month you can get 60 + ((2/7)*30) = 68GB, taking into account that half that time you'll be using the internet at 64kbps. iiNet for the same price ($90) gives you 80GB a month, after which you get shaped. Note that you can wait until the last day before using up all you quota, so you don't have to spend half the month capped. You ALSO get 1.5-8Mbps (as fast as your line/exchange will let you), as opposed to 512k. Normally I don't mind so much when people prefer other ISPs, sure, it's their choice and competition is excellent for everyone! But you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. last edited by parabol at 20:51:59 28/Apr/05 |

Errr, ,maybe you should check out internodes flatrate, because it isnt a straight cap to a set speed. Internode's flatrate plan do not "shape" to a set speed.
Maybe you should read This> Before mouthing off.... |

HOME-512-Value $49.95 512k / 128k 15 GB HOME-1500-Value $69.95 1500k / 256k 15 GB I am with Ozemail which is intergrated with IInet now. But once my 6months are up going to Internode Plus with IInet you need to go with there line rental and i dont want to pay 30 bux for line rental when we dont even use the phone! That my say! |

There's nothing wrong with Optus if you dont go over the cap and the upload speed is also fine. I don't host files and if I'm using a file sharing proggy I use netlimiter to cap the upload speed anyway. Also 20gig peak and 40gig off peak is enough to grab whatever I want for the month. The only bad thing is the price I guess but worst of all is the s*** speed if you do get capped.
Apart from that I've never had an issue with them in the past 3 or so years. |
