No doubt most people have read this over at whirlpool but I thought it may be worthy of discussion here.
Exetel has announced that on November 1st it will offer a 1.5Mbit/s ADSL plan with 500MB usage for $25, a price point that could create a major new flurry of competition in the broadband industry. It's also only $3/GB extra. Unfortunately it will only be available in NSW but it won't take long for national ISPs to release competing plans. The real item of note however is the rumour that Telstra will shortly drop it's slower adsl speeds of 256 and 512 and cancel the $80 line activation fee which might be targeted to bring it closer in comparitive pricing with cable. After the last round of price drops I considered upgading to 1.5mbit but decided to stick with a larger download allowance, now that I may not have the choice I will be intereted to see how the new plans turn out. |

Learn to read, he also said it's $3 per extra GB, which is pretty darn cheap.

What are you going to do with 500 meg?? Its useless... for everyone.Well since 3 gig is all you will ever need, it would only cost you $32 on that plan. That plan is only the starting plan, they will likely announce other 1.5mbit plans with higher usage limits. I would expect to see a 30+ gig plan for around $60 going by the current market. |

There's also talk that Telstra will release full speed plans, which means 8mbit ADSL. ADSL 2 should be approved soon which basically allows for further distances from an exchange. Hopefully ADSL 2.5 is also approved which alows for speeds of upto 25mbit.

Yeah, but how many phone lines are actually going to be able to deliver that? Theres people at the moment who have enough trouble getting 512k or 1.5mbit to work well over their lines, how is 8mbit or 24mbit supposed to be possible?

Its possible in countries where the copper system wasnt neglected for years.
Telsra Man: Oh, Ziggy... we just realised that those copper phone lines we own are going to become real important when ADSL gets big. Ziggy: Oh f***, Heh, Well, we own them all anyway, so its not like anyone else will take our business away from us. |

Theres people at the moment who have enough trouble getting 512k or 1.5mbit to work well over their lines, how is 8mbit or 24mbit supposed to be possible? All that can get ADSL now + some that are currently deemed to far from the exchange. ADSL 2 extends the signal through better modulation and allows for upto 12mbit D/L while ADSL 2+/2.5 uses more spectrum doubling the download rate but you have to be within 1.5km from the exchange. SO everyone will be benefited by ADSL2 and those that live close enough to an exchange will benefit from ADSL2+. |

$3/GB... thats pretty sweet. So $85/month to bring it up to the 20GB equivelant you get on Optus - and you pay less if you don't use as much.

i get 15-20gb a month off telstra cable, and it's a nice clean connection that doesn't play up a whole lot
especially a whole lot less problems since i moved, so this news doesn't really rock my boat maybe if it makes my cable bill 10 bucks cheaper a month.... |

Far from it; my grandfather rarely uses more than 200mb a month. Now doubt an avid warcraft 3 player, it uses extreemly small amounts of bandwitdh. The lower latency a 1.5mbit connection offers would help a lot, and IIRC this particular ISP has great links to both Asia and America. Is this the ISP that got started by the same guys who started Swiftel? |

The truth is, all you ADSL tards have nowhere near as good connections as us cable folk.
So, why dont you all just get cable and stop crying. |

ADSL is more likely to be available (a big factor if your moving), has a better range of providers with far better plans (you can't get unlimited cable, s***ty contract lengths etc), also cable can get overloaded depending on the usage of your area.

ffs, can't people get over whinging about the long contracts of cable plans, OMG 1 yr is too long. GET OVER IT. and i'm sure this will happen: I'm not going to be on the internet in a year so i'm not going to sign up.
stop making excuses to not go for cable. I'm sure if you move house the next people will want cable aswell so transfer it into their name. probably not that easy for the renters amongst you but meh. |

I'd go for cable if it was in my area, alas I've only got one decent option in ADSL. 1 year is a long time, but prices are always falling, so I doubt you'd be worse off in a years time.
