hey, i got a 80gb seagate hd thats been sitting around for about 1 1/2 yrs which has been burnt out internally because the molex cable was plugged in upside down, and it went beng when the computer was turned on (stupid dodgy hd caddy from gamedude which didnt have groves in it dis-allowing the cable to be put in upside down)

anyway, isit worth it to get it repaired for server use? (about how much $$ would it cost for companys to fixit, but not recover any *data* on it)

edit: last time i opened it up, it had a tiny burn hole, like 2mm diameter

how the hell did you manage to plug a molex power cable in upside down? they're specifically designed so you can't do that.... you must have put it in with some force. If you were really wanting to fix it, maybe just pick up an old cheap hdd, dismantle it and salvage the parts you need to replace... I've never tried it though, im only assuming you could do this.

They can do drive rebuilds, but a new drive will be alot cheaper

suppose the stuff on it isnt really worth my money (just some of my source codes, school backup and some other *things*) - i wouldve taken it back on warrenty, but when i got this hd, my parents were still paying for my stuff, so i didnt get the recept and then they couldnt find it (everything i buy for my pc i keep all the recepts in a pile now, for insurance.etc)

woops, my bad. i guess that could be a pretty easy mitake then if you never pay any attention to what colour wires face which direction being 12volt (yellow) facing towards the outer edge of the drive and the 5volt (red) point towards the middle.

dw, ive been paranoid about it ever since, never got one wrong again.. i wouldnt have got that one wrong but it was in the top bay of a dodgy gamedude case and i couldnt see the colours from the shadow - was basically feel-push situation

but if that hd didnt break, i wouldnt have goten a 200gb and more stuff, so with some bads there are some goods

I bought a caddy from GD and it had groves in it. You sir, are most likely retarded. If it didn't have any "grooves" at all you would not be able to put it in at all, it would have to have 4 edges with the 45degree cut thing on them, in which case I don't know what drugs you're smoking because I've never seen one of them at all, anywhere that has been a molex. I think you're just retarded, pushed it too hard and forced it in upside down and now want to blame gamedude for selling you a dodgy caddy when it's not gamedude's fault at all because they don't make the f***ing thing. In fact I see no reason at all to mention GD in that post.

Go find another scapegoat. Maybe it was GREMLINS OMG. Perhaps a unicorn came out of your closet and carved the corner off the molex so as to taunt you when you blew up your hard drive.

I want proof, hard evidence of this dodgy molex before I'll believe it wasn't you. Uppon seeing this proof I'll eat my words and become your personal sex slave for a year. :p

Use it as firewood, repairing something like that *successfully* is like asking god to strike down miriam with lightning, not gonna happen too soon.

I did the same thing once, but at the time, my computer was turned on. Once a hd is gone, it's f***ing gone.

fill this out just to see if its still under warranty or not. (if it came from gamedude, it most likely won't be)

http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp

you should be able to get it replaced if it is, even tho its user error. Just follow the online instructions.
