help!

I bought a 9800xt from gamedude about 2 months ago(don't ask, umart pissed me off so I bought it from there). Anyway the fan on it is f***ed now, bearing sound like the are gone, and I cbf being without a videocard for 6 months while they send it away to their grandmother or whatever they do.

Anyone know a good cooling solution for it that will fit in a little shuttle case?

get an aftermarket blue orb type cooler for it, like $40 for a better-than-oem job

I was looking at one of those zalman coolers, just wasn't sure if it would fit, or how well it would cool without a fan.

go to that below-0 place, they have all sorts of cooling solutions.

If you bought it from someone nice, they could have just swapped it over for a new one

Besides that have a look at the Zalman range, they have alot of stuff that is high quality copper etc, so the fans aren't annoyingly loud. Having said that though, what a are the space restrictions of your shuttle case ??

yeah dude, if you want easy, take your case and card to Below Zero, and ask Shaun what you should whack on it. You can try out a few things to make sure they fit.

Below Zero is the win. Haven't heard anything but good comments about those guys plus they know their s***.

Funny this is Sapphire are normally awesome when it comes to cards. Haven't had a bad thing go wrong with my 9700 Pro yet.

Here is my case restricitions

http://www.nowuckingforries.com/albums/userpics/caserestrictions.jpg

There is about half a centermeter between the hsf that's on it now and the case cover when it's on.

well personally i'd cut a hole in the side of the case straight over the top of the existing fan, whack a fan grill with some filter material under it, then I'd try and fit a $20 Vantec Iceberq4 on the card in place of the stock fan.

The case already has grill sides on it that go covers the area now. Not looking for anything super powerful, something just to replace what I have now cause atm i'm playing music loud to not notice the noise =\

Also the heatsink looks to cover the ram aswell, would probably need to get ramsinks?

I dunno if the Vantec iceberg4 would fit, myabe the pro version might. They come with ramsinks as well.

I have exactly the same card, fingers crossed my fan doesnt go the same way as yours. :)

I used the iceberg 4 pro on my old ti4600 and it was an awesome little fan for the $$.

I've got a stock P4 cooler slapped on my video card.

Does the job. :P

The Zalman heat pipe cooler will not fit in there even if you ran over it with a steam roller :P

I have one and yer they are way to big for the shuttle.

I'm supprised you fit the 9800xt in the shuttle, and how hot does it get in there?

holy s***, that's quite restrictive. You don't know anyone who has fried their card do you? How about placing an ad on sold for wanted, ATI stock cooler. Maybe someone who has a bigger case has put a bigger cooler on theirs and would like to offload a standard one.

That fan actually looks similar to a fan I have here, it's the stock fan off a thermoengine heatsink. Maybe it would fit (use your air duct with a different fan)

Get an Artic Cooling VGA silencer.

Best air cooling solution on the market, and it happens to be one of the quietest. Only as loud as the standard cooler.

Downside, is it takes up one PCI slot.

I have one of these... cost me $32 from pccasegear.com.au

I would definitely recommend one over any other air cooling method.

dude.....unscrew the fan. on the underside of the fan there will be a sticker. peel it back so you can see the bearing. Drop a smidgeon of transmission fluid or singer oil onto the bearing and it will be as good as new.

since that card is soooo damn close to the side of the case, couldn't air flow be restricted and therefore has stuffed up the fan?

is the grill on the side of the case been pressed out of the metal? or is there an actual 8cm chrome fan grill there?

As you can see there is a mesh side, so there is plenty of airflow there.

this months atomic magazine says that ramsinks do nothing except look pretty. so don't bother with them, they'll only take up space.

do you believe everything you read in atomic?

ask people on OCAU who have personal experiences with overclocking ram before and after ramsinks and they can have dramatic results. not every time, but quite often.

plus, running hardware hot can decrease the lifespan of it anyway, so why not keep it cool?

well, as they have a staff full of people who really know their s*** and have just won a truckload of awards for their magazine over a broad range of categories...
i am inclined to beleive them as i have no personal experience in overclocking.

well, you go on and believe everything they publish then

i am swayed by evidence, so if you show me screenshots of where people have used ramsinks under controlled conditions i will beleive.

Real men use shuttle.

Boba: looks nice, you need the brushed aluminium finish A07 dvd burner to match though :)

It's not that it doesn't get you anywhere, it's just that noone else wants to be there with you.

Boba: pics, hmm i'll see, the only problem is i managed to tear the header from the ide cable when putting in the dvd burner, so now i'm left with an ugly 60cm red rounded cable sticking from the side. :) I'm currently tryin to get a replacement.
