I'm quite aware of the whitepages.com.au, but you can't type in a phone number and get the address corresponding to it, or the persons name etc ;)
P.S. silent numbers wont work. last edited by teq at 23:03:13 11/May/04 |

ok that's pretty cool.
simply put: put a phone number in and it gives u name and address. wasn't there a "black pages" a few years ago that did this, but it got shutdown? or they started selling it? |

Aren't reverse lookup directories like that illegal?
Edit: After a bit of googling, it seems theres laws against it in the UK, but its not strictly illegal in Australia. At least, I'm assuming its not illegal in Australia because I didn't find anything that says it is and this online store is selling a reverse lookup phone book on cdrom. last edited by Khel at 23:09:38 11/May/04 |

Aren't reverse lookup directories like that illegal? You used to be able to buy a reverse look up program from like harvey normans or something so I doubt it. |

reverse lookup directories are not in themselves illegal, but there was a case a few years back where a telstra subsidary sued one reverse lookeruper for copyright violation claiming that they couldn't send white page directories off overseas to have key-monkies type them in as that was piracy. They won.
Also, the data is well and truly stupidly out of date or just wrong. I checked my parents phonenumber which they've had for over 10 years and it belongs to someone else in a different suburb. last edited by natslovR at 23:57:55 11/May/04 |

once you've got the db you could set up a distributed computing project to validate and update it against whitepages :-)
10,000 PCs making 4 checks per day at random times - wouldn't take long at all - considering whitepages returns multiple entries to a query not just one, and four per day, they'd never know. |

Why would this type of thing be illegal????? Can you look up people thru silent numbers????? If not then it's exactly like The White Pages.
I think it's awesome for the times when you miss a call and then use the number to find out who it was. Why ban such an awesome service? 8-/ |

ok let me lay this out for those of you who's shoe size is higher than your IQ.
whitepages.com.au - Enter a name/address, get a phone number as a result. greypages.com.au - Enter a phone number, get a name/address as a result. simple, yeah? |

why on earth do you need it? unless you're a stalker or some s***...Well, for example, if you are running a business, you can look up the person calling you based on their caller ID and answer the phone "Hello Mr Boxhead, how's the weather today in Assville? What can i do for you today?" That's what businesses use reverse lookup phone services for. Why you would need one of these on the net if you are not a legit business? So when someone's pranking you you can find out where they live. When that chick gives you a phone number on a night out you can check if it was a false lead. And when someone lists their phone number in a for sale advert, you can phone them, check that they are out, then go round and flog whatever it is they were going to overcharge you for. |

I'll have to agree there, it returns the result of my parent's place and my place and she only been there for about 2 years and we've been at our place about 3. Yet it can't find the number of our office which has been here for the last 5 years and yes the number is listed in the whitepages. last edited by Opec at 20:58:19 12/May/04 |

What can i do for you today?"Go to the back of the white pages and ther have all the first 4 digit exchange locations, so you can tell where the land line is calling from, oddly enough assville isn't listed, are you sure they have an exchange. |

if your number is silent, and the previous owners wasn't, then it remains as the previous owners I think [i.e it doesnt update as silent nor change it to yours]...

I dont see how these could be illegal. All the information is freely avalible. I had a brief look for black pages and found nothing on the court case that got the last Australian website similar to this removed so I suppose I can only speculate. If something is freely given away in the form of the whitepages telephone directory, does the telephone company surrender their exclusive right to the supplied information? Clearly the white pages is only intended to be for personal use. Personally I consider my phone number to be just that, mine. If the phone company assumes I am ok with them distributing it, I would expect them not to claim exsclusive rights over the information. Not a really big deal right now, but stuff like this will overlap into the huge databases of personal information that everyone is beginning to amass on us. |

There was something on Slashdot (I think it was) a while back about this sort of thing - someone wanted to copyright the information in a phone book, even though it was public domain.
[ Pause for Google... ] Ah, here it is: http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/03/09/06/034221.shtml?tid=103&tid=99 Obviously that's US law stuff, but its still interesting, and I imagine it is similar problems to what would happen over here - although one obvious difference is the Telstra Factor - they've historically been the only ones maintaining a list, because every single person with a phone (until very recently) was going through their network. |

I still don't understand why this is illegal or wrong.
It's the same as having a phone book in front of you, but just the opposite. If I wanna stalk someone I can still open a page in the phone book and pick a name and it'll show their addy and phone number. So what's the big deal if you know someone's number and then be able to find their address with it. Now if this thing can give out addy's for silent numbers then I can fully understand why it would be banned. |

This is like napster but for phone numbers. :) I wonder if the greypages would be covered under "fair use" if you already had a license for the whitepages.
