Napster, everybody's favourite tool to deprive artists of money, is apparently going to be moving to a membership-based model, according to a recent press release. They've reached an agreement with music company BMG in order to avoid a lawsuit being aimed at them by the same company. Will be interesting to see what happens to the average Napster user after this system is implemented; I think a lot of people will be a lot more reluctant to be using a service that will (probably) require more than a fake email address to use it.

well... its f***ing irrelevant...

there are plenty of other file-sharing programs about... peer-to-peer based systems that arent limited by needing servers and accounts and stuff... the only good thing about napster is its huge user base... once membership is required people will just start using something else... and incidentally the membership thing is a) not set in stone yet (altho f***ing likely) b) its a long way off anyway... this court case has been dragging on for ages and it will yet...

besides the pirate is always two steps ahead of technology anyway... music will still be as easy to download as ever... we'll just not be using napster...

Just as a bit of info, apparently Sony Music's CD sales went up 7% last year. So yeah, Napster is really hurting them bad eh?

BTW I have a few muso friends who have been screwed by the record companies over the years, so they think MP3 is the best thing ever. Just ask Leonardo's Bride or Hoodoo Gurus how much they've made on their platinum albums.
