I sure am

if anyone's got any bright ideas.. I seem to be having a problem with it actually doing anything - it reports bad clusters and has disk errors trying to install win2k (ie, 'can't copy this file'). Installed WinME with one screwup, which worked ok for a while before randomly rebooting. Sigh.

I hate computers

i havent had good experiences swapping hard drives and stuff over especially amd -> intel systems and vice versa, it just blue screens on startup, although this is probably able to be fixed via emergency repair console or something, you could try that via win2k boot menu

gg wart

more specifically, its an asus CUSL2-C board - from a bit of research, seems like a few people have had probs with the ATA100/win2k stuff with this board (despite the sales dude telling me there were no problems with win2k ... )

trog, ATA100 is being addressed in service pack2.

I can't even INSTALL it to install a service pack - it blows up in the installing win2k process

silly to ask i know but do you have all the latest ata drivers and bios n stuff? mebbe betas?
trog

latest non-beta bios is installed

dunno about the ata-drivers and stuff, but from what I've read, it should be working without any additional drivers.

With ATA drivers though, how do you install them pre-win2k install?

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q260/2/33.ASP

Not sure if that'll work or not. From memory, if you want to use hotfixes before an install, you have to run the windows based install from win95/98/nt.

Also, I know it sounds stupid, but make sure the cd is clean. I had all kinds of weird errors like "can't copy file, setup is now quitting" on random files, and it kept doing it until I cleaned the cd...

hehe WinME - there's new code in there to randomly reboot at bad times, as well as randomly slow down...ergh...

i read that that hotfix would cure those blues but i didnt know where the link was :( good work s&w

i agree

ash; er that's because win2k installs are hardware dependant.. it's not like win9x where you can just plug in new s*** and it will detect it...

Oh boy i had issues with that board on my current PC, but my problems were caused by my SB Live.

You got a SB Live trog?

hmm thanks guys, I'll try again before taking it back.

Mutty - in fact, I sure do - I'll take it out and see how I go, but there's no way I'm gonna keep a motherboard that won't let me keep my SB Live.

any luck yet?

some people have had to put the pci cards in one at a time..starting with none if possible, and the sblive last

as for the sblive..you can still use it but itll help if its not in during install apparently (as mutty said)

also if you can get hold of cg, he's pretty cluey with this sort of thing (sorry for p!mping you cg)

I cant recall exactly what the problem was, but my SB Live was in the wrong PCI slot apparently, and caused an IRQ conflict (something to do with the PCI slots sharing IRQ's), but once i moved the SB Live into the righ PCI slot (PCI slot 3 on my CUSL2) the problems faded far far away...

Removing SB 16 emulation is apparently meant to help as well, although i havent done that yet (i think its just a REM in autoexec.bat?).

taking out the SBLive didn't make any difference - I'm pretty sure now that the problem lies with the HDD itself, although its weird. If I format in Windows using the rightclick-format option, all goes ok - if I format from DOS, it makes scary clunking noises and reports bad sectors at the end.

I've got a brand new IBM 20gig which is exactly the same (except for size) so I'll try it with that.

The saga continues...

Can you run your hdd on a non-ata100 ide? Just having a look at www.cusl2.com it looks as though you can't. :(

That would have been my suggestion...

umm u could try running the hdd at ATA66 or 33 if the bios allows it(it SHOULD), or jus get 40Gb of SCSI Goodness like me :)

oh and if ur wondering why u should do that it;s to do wif ata100 going too fast and loosing sync wif the OS or something like that, turn it down and see what it does.

yeah, I say run SCSI like SquarkyD and then you'd go even faster and even get out of sync with the forums, resulting in double posts. :P

that link that sprayNwipe posted appears to be the crux of the problem; however in true MS fashion, it has no useful solution to the problem - to get the patch required apparently I need to contact support services for it

Well s***, that aint really a surprise, considering DOS only really supports hdds up to 512mb i think.

So of course it'll format fine in windows, due to the fact windows can handle it.

mmmm LBA

win98 (fat32)dos supports whatever your bios can handle Cyph (so far - although i've yet to test with a 100+ drive :)

seems unusual that the drive ops fine in windows Trog... sounds like the hd's card is damaged. prolly worth ripping one off another 20 deskstar (same model) to be sure. then again - the guys at the shop you bought it from will prolly do that anyhow :/

btw... where'd you buy the hdd from ? did they exchange it on the spot?
