I just bought a Sony Stereo with Dolby in it.

I was watching The Rock on DVD before, and it was SO f***ING BASSY... I couldn't hear s*** over the low bass drone that was coming out of all 5 speakers...

People would shoot a gun, and it wouldn't sound like a gunshot... it'd sound like a drone... it was pretty f***ed up.

Have I set this up wrong? or is that just a Pro Logic thing?

oh and I forgot to mention...

The stereo has a thing called "groove" which basically ups it all to make it sound more crisp...

On or off, it still sounds like a bass rumble and not a gunshot.

most decent steros have a bass and treble control, if not, you have bought s***, check your remote control for this feature maybe? but most times they are clearly labled on the front of the unit.

what model number is it?

I'm pretty sure that a stereo with a "groove" function isn't going to be exactly Mordaunt Short material.

Double check your cables and s***, and make sure you arent trying to play 5.1 if you only have pro logic.

see thats the thing...

My mate came over and set all the s*** up because on the back of my Sony DVD player, it doesn't have an input for the Centre channel speaker... so he ended up using all these wierd and wonderful cables etc to plug it all in.

it's really quite strange but all i know is that when I want to watch a DVD, I put it on the "Video" setting and when I want to watch Television / Video, I put it on the "5.1" setting and it only comes out of the front 2 speakers...

I would check the cables and everything, but I have no clue what i'm looking for

For some reason he's wired your DVD to the stereo's video in; and your TV/Video to your stereo's DVD in.

As much as it hurts, you need to get a centre speaker. You could always bodgy up a splitter cable to 'fake' a cventre between your two mains... but that would be pretty Dark Age of Camelot gay.

I do have a centre speaker...

And sound comes out of it during DVDs... just not anything else.

it's really quite bizarre, but it fixed my problem to an extent, and now it's just bassy as all f*** and there is no apparent way to turn the bass down...

it doesn't have an input for the Centre channel speaker...

wtf!?

If everything's cabled correctly, the only thing I can think of is that your sound signal thinks its getting sent to a subwoofer instead of your speakers.

haha

ok the layout on the back of my DVD player for cables is:

O O O
O O O

the 2 on the right are VIDEO plugs (f***ed if I know why) and the other 4 are speaker plugs...

I can plug 4 out of my 5 speakers into them... but there is nowhere to plug a center channel speaker.

so he's done something (I'm not quite sure exactly what he did) to make sound come out of all 5 speakers...

Now I dont know what is going on, but all i know is that i can't hear ANY of the effects in the middle of a firefight... because it's drowned out by this deep drone...

it's quite gay, but I dont know what the f*** to do

heh - I had a Sony midi system for awhile... damn thing was too loud for my flatmates to tolerate. gos sick of being asked to turn it down so I sold it. I ask you - who the hell listened to Pantera/Metallica/Vai/Faith no More etc with the volume set to low?

fiddle with the EQ a bit till you can find the settings that sound good to you. i used to have different presets for video/quake/q2/sin/hl/different cds (this was a ways back :). it took some time to work thru the manual at the time... god only knows what's involved with todays manuals =P

anyways dude... tinkering maketh you teh winnah. good luck with your new uber sound system

you should be using the optical out on your dvd player for proper 5.1 sound i think you need to unplug the whole thing make sure you have the correct cables and plug everything back in bit by bit as per the manual...it should be a piece of piss but it doesn't sound like you ar your mate know what you are doing so do it step by step as per the manual...shortcuts will lead to it being all f***ed up....

correct me if im wrong ( im understanding the sony thing in the pic above doesnt play dvds and ur hooking it up to a external dvd player correct?)
but usually u dont plug ur speakers into ur dvd player, u plug them into a amplifier, and if ur amplifier came with 5 speakers, it should have 5 speaker ports, u then should be hooking up ur dvd player to ur amp by means of either rca jacks ( gay ) , component connect ( 3 plugs for rgb values i think ) or a optical plug( one fibre optic plug which is what we have )
ur sony stereo should have a form of eq on it, it migth be labelled soundscapes, or sound fields or something, our yamaha home theatre amplifier has sound fields, plus on the front treble and bass knobs ( plus a bass boost button)
im sure ur sony thingy would have it as well, try calling up the place u bought it from, if u forked out all the cash to buy, im sure theyd be willing to help u with any troubles u have with it

Whats the model number of your dvd player?

your stereo looks cheap mate. if you want to buy a stereo to play DVD's make sure you can use a Optical Cable and also produces DTS sound. using a optical cable only requires ONE cable instead of several rca cables for all your speakers. dont get me wrong, you stereo might be ok for the purpose of playing music but it probably cant do multi-channel decoding very well.
