Both my girlfriend and one of my mates are taking part in this thing at the moment whereby they live with a bunch of American students that are in .au to do a semester at UQ. Last semester (the first time we were involved) was a great success and we all made a bunch of great friends from the US.

The latest 'batch' of students have just arrived - people that frequent Toowong pubs and city nightclubs might notice a slight increase in the amount of Americans (colloquially referred to as Seppos, for 'septic tank', which rhymes with yank, which is stupid but aaaaaanyway...

Some of them went out last night into the valley - the first thing most of them do is head out and party fairly hearty.

Unfortunately two of the girls met some bad luck at some dirty play in a Valley nightclub last night when they had their drinks spiked by some, for want of a word that really encompasses what I think about these sort of individuals, a******.

Needless to say, this sort of behaviour is not only criminal but the sign of a seriously sick individual. Anyone that does stuff like this really deserves to be in jail or even better, have significant chunks of their anatomy removed with a dull knife, honey poured all over them and left out in the desert surrounded by giant ants, or something.

Anyway, just a friendly warning to yall; I know most of you out there are guys and I'm sure many of you have a bunch of female friends that go out and stuff - make sure yall are keeping an eye on them. And if you catch anyone pouring funny s*** into someone's drink, make sure they f***in end up in jail, please.

When I was doing first-aid with SES during schoolies I saw at least one possible drugged victim a night, and there was one really suss one.

We saw a girl (hawt) sitting on the edge of some garden thingy. We walked up to her and asked if she needed anything (water, strecher) and she didn't answer. The cops came over and asked the guy sitting next to her if he knew her and he said no. They took the girl away (because the cops where aware she might be date-raped) and then the guy piped up and said he was her boyfriend....

i was at a club in the valley one nite and while sitting there and enjoying the scenery, i just happen to notice some c*** trying to spike my beer. when he noticed that i had noticed he went running. after a screech to the bar ppl and manager, and a very unhappy decayingcorpse, the spiked beer went flying across the room and i preceeded to walk out.

as a result of my "unhappy" experience, i no longer go to any clubs in the city or the valley. the local pub is fine everynow and then.

i havent been clubbing very long but unfortunately ive had experiences to last me a lifetime... the worst one was when i was out clubbing with a couple of guys and about 6 or 7 chicks, and we headed into the city first, finding that not to our taste (After witnessing 2 drunken brawls at 9pm) headed down into the valley. to cut a long story short we saw some guy spike this chicks drink, tried to go after him but he left rather quickly, and made sure the chick didnt drink it... but from then since we have always made sure if someoen leaves their drink, that the others keep an eye out for it.

that night i copped a punch in the stomach for stopping some guy feeling up my friend... so it wasnt the best of nights :/

while i dont go clubbing anymore (burnt myself out young ;) my recommendation is if you have to leave your drink... DONT come back and drink it. either finish it before you leave it or get a new one on the way back. DONT rely on friends. nightclubs are noisy places with a lot of distractions they might not notice anything.

I hardly go to clubs after a few bad expereinces, mainly fights (i wasnt involved, but f***, it ruins the night). And when i do, i stick to trance music nights, where more freindly ppl seem to rock up. Nightclubs = full of drunk angry people, thats why i go to rave parties, freindly outgoing people having a great time and hardly any booze around. Sure theres drugs, but not the spiking kind you find in dirty, smelly hot nightclubs.

Ok, you want proof do you trog? Well I found what I was looking for on the Australian Institute of Criminology's website. What I was in fact referring to was the International Crime Victims Survey (I couldn't remember the name at the time). You can see the Australian component of the ICVS here: here. Read the site for yourselves and then have a little think. By the way, note that the last ABS study was done a two or three years ago so its already out of date. And the Australian component of the ICVS was conducted in March 2000 I believe so it's not up to date either.

Lastly I found this bit of text on some article (by The Age newspaper) which I can't find again:

The survey found 30 per cent of people in Australia had been victims of crime, twice the rate of Portugal and Northern Ireland, and well ahead of the next highest rate, 26 per cent, in England.

Apparently that's higher than in the US.

south africa has a lot of areas completely free of crime, its very opulent living in those areas.
australia is the safest country in the world imo in terms of how friendly the people are and walking around at night and stuff, but still, crime per capita is higher than any other developed country, mainly because of our very tiny population. south africa can have double the crime we have and still have less crime per capita....

My friend had a swiss exchange student here for like 8 weeks, and he couldn't believe that you just didn't walk through the valley at 3am, if you had any mind. Sounds strange, but makes sense since they are harsher on serious violent crimes over there, and it deters would be rapists and muggers. I wouldn't know first hand though.

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine at Fiasco's restaurant/bar 2 years ago, she stayed in the girls toilets after her 2nd drink cos she felt way too woozy and thought 'wtf.' She was ok though, cos she passed out there and the vermin who spiked her drink didn't get his hands on her.

I was quite dissappointed in myself for not noticing that my friend had dissappeared though- cos at that time I was her best friend ffs.
