We had Webcentral reset qgl1 (hosted sites, primary dns, email) for us this morning, but the box booted up with disk errors. Luckily they were good enough to let me go onsite even with only a couple of hours notice so that I could work on the server, where I found the problem was being caused by some bad blocks preventing fsck from completing on boot.

Webcentral gave me a replacement drive right away, but unfortunately, the bad blocks are on one of the system partitions, so a quick drive swap and data copy was out of the question.

I've decided to upgrade the O/S while the box is offline as well, so I've brought it back to my place and am working on it now.

Webcentral may be unable to permit me access this late in the evening, so even after I get it going again tonight, it may still be tomorrow morning/midday before it's back in the rack and online again.

No data has been lost, and email will be fine for the most part because we run qmail.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the inconvenience. Also, thanks very much to Webcentral for their support and help - QGL is an organisation that are supplied all these resources at zero cost by Webcentral - yet their support centre was there for us even during this christmas holiday time.

It's safe to say that having techs onhand to reset the server, and then failing that, to allow us to enter their premises and work on the server with no prior booking, to give us a free replacement hard disk, and then to also let me take it out of the facility overnight for an overhaul, is well and truly above and beyond the call of duty.
