Hi guys,

I have some video files in MKV format i need to convert to avi.

I have googled this yes but I want to know if anyone here has a free easy piece of software they use already to do this.

Basically I don't want to pay for any software to do this and I don't want to use any software that has any limitations.

Also does converting an MKV file to avi result in any loss of video quality?

mkv is a container, just like .avi is a container, the video would be encoded with a certain codec, probably h264 or x264, thats what u need to convert. I like virtual dub, but u gotta know how to use it.

im guessing u are having trouble with 720p vids in .mkv format?

h264 codec ftw.....but 360 might not support.....

ive looked into recoding them b4 and it was a right pain in the ass that i didnt worry about. (time consuming and results arent guranteed due to noobness)

so i was lucky enough to score a new pc (courtesy of mongie), with enough juice to
play the vids.....

most of them are live music vids from a t/leech pack, so had to be able to play....
e.g muse, radiohead, prodigy full concerts from this year....ftw !!!!!

oh duh, didnt see dans post......thats your ticket !!!!!!

I use handbrake its open source (so its free) does everything i've ever needed to do to convert for PDA, iriver and PS3. You need to take the time to learn how to use it tho.

Tip: if your looking for free software type in google: open source *name of application you would normally pay for* it should link up to a site which provides excellent open source alternatives for apps that arent free.

The thread was over as soon as Dan mentioned PS3 Media Server. Everything else in the thread is obsolete.

unless you're using a s*** pc that can't transcode on the fly or you want to play games while housemates watch movies.
