some noob posted that avatar would return a loss
i cant find the thrad, but i did find this AVATAR - finished the weekend with an opening gross of $77M in the US and $165M overseas for a weekend total of $242M, exceeding expectations thanks to positive reviews and word of mouth. Also getting rave reviews is the guacamole I made for tonight’s party. (variety) asif it would return a loss |

well it cost $500m to make by most reports I've read, so it still has a ways to go edit: apparently that $500m figure is a WAG so who knows |

it didnt do as well as it could have in america because of an epic snow storm that stopped people from going to the cinemas. apparently it could have made another 20-30
million. but yer i think it will make a profit. last edited by ravn0s at 21:10:52 22/Dec/09 |

$500m is just NYT's best guess at production + marketing + other random bulls***. the offical budget was $230m
epic prediction: avatar will gross > titanic at the box office and become the highest grossing film of all time. |

That's barely more than double what it cost to make terminator 2, and with five perent inflation and so many years past since then I can't count, it's not that bigger deal.
I'm sure they'll jimmy it up so it makes a loss so they can rip people off and avoid paying tax. |

Sci-fi without an existing following is a hard sell for an opening weekend.
140M US domestic is the current biggest opening weekend of all time, recently won by the Twilight f*****ry brigade. For Avatar to come half-way to Twilight is pretty good given that it doesn't have legions of stupid people adoring it for no good reason.. |

err no its not. the dark knight is first with 158m US followed by spiderman 3 with 151m. new moon is third. i think it will be a while before anything reaches the 1.8b that titanic has. the second highest grossing movie of all time is return of the king at 1.1b. thats a f***ing 700m difference :/ last edited by ravn0s at 22:49:59 22/Dec/09 |

It won't beat Titanic.
Back then people were stupid and a majority of Christian groups asked for a version of Titanic to be censored - no swearing (dunno if there was any) and no sex scene with Leo and Kate. Girls watches it for Leo. There's no way in hell religious groups will watch this with all the action. It's a pity, but we live in a dumb society. |

actually what someone needs to find out is (I'm too afraid to have this in my search history) how much the first twihard movie made
cause it's avatar II that will have a fan base and this Sci-fi without an existing following is a hard sell for an opening weekend. no longer applies last edited by tequila at 00:53:35 23/Dec/09 |

You're right - I had recalled a news article I scrolled past about "140M biggest opening weekend" ... as if "third biggest opening weekend" is news? So much hate for twilight. Looks like Avatar beat twilight for opening weekend? Not bad considering Twilight had a pretty strong following from the books and Avatar is all new IP! last edited by Hogfather at 00:52:37 23/Dec/09 |

Biggest opening weekend for a film that's neither a sequel, remake or direct adaptation. Impressive start for sure. It'll get close to $1 billion worldwide, easy.

They'll probably make half of that from just the blu-ray discs that are bundled with 3D capable TVs when they start to roll out mainstream.

some noob posted that avatar would return a loss I think that was me. Although I think I said it would break even, dunno can't remember, but I'm more than happy to be wrong after seeing Avatar. However I based my prediction on the insane cost of Avatar ($hitloads) and the fact that it is a new Sci-Fi genre with no dedicated fanbase like say Star wars. In comparison to say Titanic, Avatar looks on paper to have a narrower demographic. As much as most of us wanted to spew when Titanic got all gooey lovey-duvvy millions of women around the world went and saw the movie multiple times, and that it was really made the big bucks for Titanic. I just couldn't see that happening again with Avatar. Also whilst I thought Avatar was a good movie, I don't really have any desire to go see it again. I might by the DVD when I can get it in the bargain bin for $9.95 but that's about it. On top of that I really can't recommend it to certain people. I mean sure I can bang on about it to my mates and rellies that are around my age but some people I know just 'don't get' Sci-Fi and it would be a waste of my time recommending it them. Anyway that was the basis of my prediction. |

I just couldn't see that happening again with Avatar. The key point is word of mouth. That's what it'll keep it in the cinemas for a (relatively) long time and slowly build the box office returns. I'm sure there's fanboys out there that'll see it multiple times anyway. |

If it hasn't hit the billion mark after the first month (maybe two) then it's not going to hit it. It won't stay in cinema's as long as Titanic did, so it needs to make it's money ASAP

conversely though heardy, it will have a much bigger circulation on dvd and blu ray than titanic did given they are more prevalent now. revenue comes from all forms of presentation, merchandise etc. |

very true.
The figures in the above links are box office totals, I thought? I'd like to see the numbers if they included all revenue steams. |

It won't stay in cinema's as long as Titanic did, so it needs to make it's money ASAPInterestingly though, IMAX was already betting big on it back in May. They've pegged it in for a 3 month run, which is pretty damn epic for IMAX. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Avatar-To-Take-Over-IMAX-13238.html That article points out that Star Trek was only in IMAX for 2 weeks (not sure how long Dark Knight ran for though). |
