Topic: TF2 Free Weekend - Explain to me this game

Risking a thread deletion however...

I know a lot of you fellas are massive TF2 players, so I decided to download the game overnight during this free weekend. I know next to nothing about this game, played it once a few years ago but I haven't played since.

As a noob, who do you recommend I use, and what suggestions do you have? Is this game really good as some people would suggest?

I await your suggestions!

Just pick whatever class sounds interesting and give it a go for a few rounds.

Scout and soldier is good for quake players, and sniper is good for cs players.

The other classes are actually fun. Pyro and demo seem to be quite easy to learn. Heavy and medic are strong team players and worth using as well.

Spy has a bit of a learning curve, but is ultimately a fairly easy fun class to play.

The other thing you need to know is that engineers can build teleports, sentry gun turrets, and a device called a 'dispenser' which was the only wtf for me when I started playing, but it gives ammo and health.

The game is designed in a way that it makes it kind of obvious what's going on most of the time in regards to the team's goal.

I really enjoyed this game at first. Although honestly I kinda got sick of all the modifications to the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of keeping the game fresh, but I'd love to just play it with all the default weapons again. Thats when it really kicked ass.

I got over it, it's pretty much the same thing over and over again and servers either play too few maps or too many crap ones.

My 8 y/o son loves playing it! What more do you need to know?

He's built up some serious stats for me :P

It's definitely worth playing, just a good bash, and as it's fairly straight forward it's perfect for both casual and hard core gamers alike. Given half a chance, which only happens during 1/200th of the annual blue moons, I sit down and have a good play of it. Kinda fun playing as Pyro and setting the opposing team members on fire.

my recommendation is to play medic, follow a heavy and learn the maps + objectives off someone else.

solider on twofort instaspawn maps are where its at.

maximum action, minimium sitting on your thumb waiting to respawn.

they are always full, so you know they are good.

yeah look that stuff is obvious when you play, but there's...
Capture the flag (it's actually an intelligence briefcase)
Control Point (you have to stand on a point for a few seconds to control the area, there are several points and you can usually only access one at a time)
Payload (one team pushes a cart along a rail, the other defends)
Payload Race (both teams push carts)
Arena (sort of like counter-strike)
King Of The Hill (1 control point.. i don't really get it tbh)

did I miss any?

one with a good ping, gamearena or internode, don't choose instaspawn it's f***ed, you go to the trouble of killing someone and they just magically appear a few metres away.

I can't rememeber the names of the server I always played on, but I would suggest the the 2Fort level in Instaspawn so you don't have to wait around.

How big is the steam download for TF2? I already have DOD installed but I don't want to kill my download quota just on this one game...

team based games with individual achievements is fail, people never work together it's balls.. 1 of the reasons i stopped.

well I submitted a bug, if you mindlessly keep double clicking items in your backpack until after your craftin area is full it borks the memory or something

^ I couldn't say exactly how much the download is, but it's gotta be might be comparable to the size of the backup files I have: 4GB

Yeah, love my TF2. The classes and stuff are overwhelming for the first couple of days but after that you'll work it out - it's pretty basic.

I sure as s*** wouldn't let my 8yo son play TF2 online. The other wankers on the server are just generally abusive. Good move muting the VOIP, but there's always text.

the game should be reclassified as RC now that you can decapitate enemies.

If you want I think you can just mute the voice chat part in options, leaving the rest of the sounds (turn down the Voice Receive Volume so its at 0%).

Just work on getting class achievements, they will give you a class specific item at each milestone.

the alternative is just keep playing and you eventually get a useless random item you don't want.
