Ok so 80% of the time my steam group servers won't show up - no servers at all (my groups are 3FL and GameArena). Other times I get these whacko overseas servers showing up which aren't even in my steam groups.

I tried connecting to a 3fl server directly from console and it wouldn't work - got the following message:

] connect 203.217.25.40:27109
Connecting to public(203.217.25.40:27109)
Sending UDP connect to public IP 203.217.25.40:27109
Invalid protocol, expecting 2004, got 2003
BinkOpen( c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\media\l4d2_background02.bik )

This is all annoying the crap out of me. Any ideas? I'm running a full gore copy imported from the US.

Sometimes my steam group servers don't show up (GA, 3fl, Gamespace) but quitting and rejoining l4d2 fixes that.

Try dropping console and using openserverbrowser. I still prefer using the steam group list though.

My main annoyance is I am finding too many overseas c***s on aussie servers. Every god damn server I joined last night had a bunch of c***s with pings of 300+. Piss off.

i had the reverse issue last night.. every time we tried getting a lobby game going, we ended up in a Korean server... fuuuuuuu, just ended up hosting on one of the guys PC.

ctd: tried openning server browser and it wasnt picking up and 3fl or game arena.

I'm pretty sure the entire thing is f***ed - takes me half an hour of restarting l4d before i can get my steam servers to appear. Noob count is also epic.

Not so much a server browser problem though I have been getting some weird results (Servers in Japan for example).

My main bitch is I'm constantly being disconnected with "Unable to authenticate user with Steam" errors which continue until I do an integrity check on my cached game files which verifies there is at least one or two damaged files which need to be reaquired.

If I don't do this prior to launching game each and every time I play, happens 100% of the time.
s***s me to tears I tell ya...

wtf ?

no f***ing you're so angsty when you're finally ingame Hermi.

RockitMan:

there's a command you can add in the console to only look for servers within a certain ping range.. but I just set mm_dedicated_force_servers for our server IP and be done with it.

why aren't ya just joining friends ingame?

WHY doesn't left4deads UI have all the options in it so you can filter servers out when in the lobby or somesuch?

Koopz: I added a bunch of QGL'ers from the 'steam id thread' but the only friend server i see up is 'jimsaq' which is always full. I'm on iinet so i like to play on 3FL servers as it's freezone.

I _just_ finished a new website I've been working for the past week or so - it's aimed at letting you play on a decent Australian/NZ server without you having to do all the hard work of finding a decent one to play on.

http://www.play4dead.com

Play4Dead continuously monitors hundreds of local Australian/New Zealand game servers, allowing it to make snap decisions in finding you the best possible server to play on.

When you use the Play Now or Party system, Play4Dead evaluates each game server that it tracks according to a range of criteria:
•The server must be running the chosen game mode and version
•The server must be populated; empty servers are never chosen (unless your Party size requires an empty server)
•If in a party; there must be enough free slots for every party member (on any team) to join
•Server's that have more players are preferred over those that are nearly empty
•Server's that are closer to the start of their campaign progress are preferred when applicable to the game mode (Versus, Co-Op and Realism)
•Servers recently joined by you via the Play4Dead system are excluded from being recommended to you again for several minutes
These decisions are made for you in seconds. You're even connected to the game server automatically!

Feedback appreciated (via e-mail or just in this thread), let me know how it works for you.

You can either find a server just for you, or if you want to play with a few friends create a party which will mean a server with enough room for all of you can be found instead.

You don't need to be in-game already to use it (or even have the game running), but if you do thats okay too.

This is a WIP, so something may be broken or go horribly wrong, but it's been working well so far.

Works great plasma!

I'd still like a standard server spy/browser so i can choose myself though

There's a 'View Servers' link on the page, its pretty basic though.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

top stuff plasma (really, it's awesome work~!), now we just need to get the word out about this so next time i join an aussie server it's not full of c***s with 400+ pings.

RockitMan: Unfortunately not yet, although that's definitely something I want there. I'm gathering server info via standard server browser queries, and the difficultly is not shown in L4D2 (just L4D1).

I've emailed Valve to see if they can get that included (plus a few other things), not sure if or when that will happen, though.
