Ok so my motherboard's FSB is maxed out running my CPU at stock speed (infact 1333 wasn't even supported initially but later added through a BIOS upgrade from the manufacturer so technically it's overclocked just running the CPU at stock) and my video card is a few generations old.
Current specs: Asus Commando board E6850CPU 8800GTS 640MB video 4GB RAM I'm mainly looking to upgrade my video card but my mobo isn't PCI-X 2.0 so I have to upgrade that too. I'm happy with my RAM/CPU at this point in time so no i7/DDR3 stuff. I was thinking of a P5Q-Pro ($187) and some sort of nvidia 2xx video card, maybe a ASUS GTX 260 896M PCIe Video Card GTX260 ($319)? |

Nice board that P5Q-Pro. The GTX 260 will be heaps, depends how hardcore you want your gaming experience.

Is there a huge leap between the 260 and the 275? I just spotted a ASUS GTX 275 896MB PCIe for $399 that I didn't see before.

AMD/ATI and Nvidia will both release new hardware in the 4th quarter of the year. Why not hold out until then and get better bang for your buck?

Might be worth checking if your store (CA?) will price match.

if it helps, my 260 is lucky to get ~40fps in some luscious custom L4D maps with everything turned on @ 1650x1080... well I say luscious but I mean godamn depressing in high res.. but ya get the meaning.
once L4D2 comes out I'm seriously looking to upgrade eh. oh - I run a 6850 too... unless you running Vista it isn't running overtime mate. best hold on to that little diamond ;) last edited by koopz at 21:42:14 27/Jul/09 |

I am running vista but its video rendering is starting to piss me off (seems to put everything in GDI mode no matter what I set, especially quicktime) so when I get the new board/card I'm off back to XP where my videos don't look like they were rendered using the duke3d engine.
Maybe I'll go the 285 or something then? How many FPS do you get in crysis koopz? If I get it from CA (most likely) who should I ask for? :p |

Maybe I'll go the 285 or something then? How many FPS do you get in crysis koopz? mate I didn't look when I had it loaded. it ran smooth as a baby's ass though. when new videocard time comes around I'll be hasseling Step or Hermitech @ CA for the lowdown. they know what's good and what's to be avoided based on their day to day exposure to all the makes/models and the different mobo combinations they go with |
