Topic: Voltage - using a EURO 230v item in AUS on 240v

Hi Guys,

Looking at purchasing a guitar pre-amp from europe - problem is the power supply is 230volts and these are impossible to swap over.

I've been told by a guitar shop it should work fine here on 240v - I obviously just have to swap the plug over

Google has given abit of advice (mainly from Wiki Answers) but I cannot find anything concrete.. mainly that it *should* work
The item does not contain any electric motors (which seem to be a problem) but it does contain 2 vacuum tubes.

Any sparkies got any advice?

Yes the advice on the net is very sketchy. Some things say you need one of those massive and expensive converter packs, other say you just need to get a powerpack from jaycar.

I bought a pre-amp from the US and bought a new powerpack/plug from jaycar and works fine.

I've used 230V s*** here with the simple $10 Dick Smith adaptor.

I only needed a step down transformer when using 110-120V US appliances.

I thought it would be fine, a lot of computer power supplies I have seen are 230v.

Australia
230V* 50 Hz I *Outlets typically controlled by adjacent switch.
Though nominal voltage has been officially changed to 230V, 240V is within tolerances and commonly found.

yeah 240v is dead and gone, all you need is the plug adaptor.

farking awesome!

I didn't know we are officially 230v now :)

My podxt is a usa one - thus I have to use a step down transformer with it.
(turns AUS 230/240v into US 110v)
Hopefully this new gear means I can sell the podxt+step down trans...

I wouldn't say that was official at all!

230/240/110v is still the same however!

*edit*230v is still inside the 10% tolerance allowed anyway!

Meh, my wall voltage in St Lucia a couple of years ago was 210V and didn't have any serious problems except the UPS kept triggering early in the mornings (and waking me up, arg!)

Did you find that you had a lot of appliances dying or not living as long as they should, Parabol?

What would your definition of official be then?

Also, yes it is still in the tolerance level however, allowable voltage drop is 5% not 10%. So if you are getting 210v you most definitely should call Energex.

yeah as has been said its not that big a voltage difference, its the frequency which you need to be worried about
i use a step down transformer for our kitchenaid from the states, was about 100 bucks from jaycar
