Any gamers noticed improvements or stability issues since it's been out couple months (RC1)
1) Performance To quote a coworker: 'Across same hardware, Crysis runs awesome on Win7! Even better than XP!'. Code for the OS has been optimized for better all around performance for games. Whatever you're playing now should be a better experience in Windows 7. 2) Compatibility The top third-party games, services, and international versions of games have been tested in Windows 7, so you should not worry about Windows 7 breaking your games. Feel free to move to Windows 7 because whatever you're playing now should work fabulously in Windows 7. 3) Discoverability You can use Start -> Search to find any game you just downloaded or installed. No need to launch a separate application. Likewise, you won't need to launch a game to get more info about it: The Windows 7 Games Explorer can show you in-game statistics within a preview pane plus delivers up-to-date info about your favorite game publishers and gives you the opportunity to try new games. 4) Easy updates The new Games Explorer will notify you whenever updates are available for your games so you don't have to go searching for them yourself or have to launch the game to see if there's an update waiting. 5) DirectX 11 support DirectX 11 means better games, pure and simple, with more advanced features for games to use. 6) Multitouch support An increasing number of gamers are using mutltouch devices. Windows 7 supports multitouch-capable machines, so you can buy the latest and greatest multitouch laptop or desktop confident it's going to work in Windows 7. 7) Classics Here's a bonus reason for you: Windows 7 is going to bring back Internet Backgammon, Internet Spades, and Internet Checkers because you can't spend all your time hardcore. |

I just installed Flight Sim X on my PC now with Win 7. In a built up city under Vista I would get 10-15fps, now I get 50-60 with the same settings.

What the f*** is everyones problem with vista? I migrated to 64bit vista less than a year ago now, so between service pack 1 and 2 I think... Haven't had a single issue. No blue screens, no performance issues, every game ive played works. The only issues I do have are minor and can be worked around anyway - UAC and games explorer forcing shortcuts instead of letting them go in the start menu.
As for the automatic game updates, how will that work with free usage ISP mirrors? (I assume it wont, rendering it useless - not to mention its probably only for GFW anyway) Regardless Im sure Ill upgrade simply for DX11. edit: The whole OP sounds like such fanboy f*****ry. Yeah, don't understand the Vista haters camp either. 3) Is not a reason - this feature is in Vista 4) Is a reason NOT to go to Win 7 (i.e., we are watching what you are are playing and selling our stats to companies! You should have read our EULA) 6) Is not a reason - is the next Call of Duty (or any other game we play) going to be multitouch is it? 7) Is not a reason And 5) is bloody well just expected for some forward progress in gfx hardware and software. So, pretty ordinary list from my perspective. Only 1) and 2) are really interesting to me - not that I have ever had a compatibility issue under Vista (with the one exception of GCC/MinGW/Code::Blocks). |

So why wouldn't you upgrade? here's a couple of reasons... 1) the games you play already play fine on the o/s you are currently using. not just fine... massive frames/sec. 2) as of march 1st 2010 windows7 rc will start bi-hourly shutdowns to remind you there are no free lunches. 3) after august 1st 2010 you will have to buy it... $449 for pro / $469 for ultimate. almost 500 bux for something you don't need. |

All the same arguments for moving to Vista are now applying to moving to Win7 :) Personally, I like it and it performs better than Vista did on the same hardware.

And lol at DX11. Doesn't mean games are magically gonna be better. |

Yeah, I don't really mind paying for it, since I haven't paid for a copy of windows since Windows 95 (I do have a legit XP its just I got it for free as a student). I don't hate Vista, but it never really impressed me enough to make me want to buy it, whereas Windows 7 does, thats all it really comes down to for me.

I don't see much advantage in the games thing since every PC game I play I buy off of Steam, run through Steam and keep updated through Steam. Being with Internode I never have to worry about it eating into my quota either.
How much does it cost to buy a new gfx card or upgrade your CPU/RAM or even buying a new PC? The performance boost I've seen from going from XP to Win7 is massive and has made me realise that the OS was the bottleneck in my system. You might have to pay for it in several months time but right now it's free and if you're not using it then why the hell not? I have my XP installation on dual boot, haven't used it in months but it's there and will still be there come march if I decide I don't want to spring for the upgrade cost right away. Right now you get an 8 month try before you buy period, I wish I'd had that for all the horrible games and software I'd wasted money on in the past. |

The performance boost I've seen from going from XP to Win7 is massive and has made me realise that the OS was the bottleneck in my system. that appears the be the upshot from what i've read but from my limited testing it's not the case. i have an old p4-3.4ghz / 1gb ram / nvidia7600. i did a clean install of xp-pro & then loaded quake & q3a... massive frames, can't remember the figures. then reformatted & put win7 on... pretty much same figures... i got slightly higher fps in win7 when running q3a at the higher resolutions. sure... i know this isn't a good test & should have used more modern games... but at least i did a test n didn't just look n go 'oh yeh heaps faster!' :P if someone wants to do some testing like that i would be interested in the results. You might have to pay for it in several months time but right now it's free and if you're not using it then why the hell not? i am using it just not on my main machine. it seems really good... but i still wouldn't pay ~$450 for it. i expect a free copy will be given to me sooner or later. |

Demon I wouldn't say XP would be a major bottleneck for a PC running a P4, I believe it's more so for newer chips that have options that XP simply doesn't utilise. I have a quad core 6600 and have noticed not only a decent increase in FPS in Fallout 3 and Call of Duty but in Fallout 3 I've noticed the graphics are a little better (possibly due to DX10?). I haven't done any real testing though, my XP version is only 32bit so I have more RAM available in Win7 and I usually play around with the graphics settings but have left them at recommended for Win7 so it's not a perfect comparison. Fallout still crashes like an Audi all the time but when it crashes in Win7 I don't have to manually restart as the ctrl-alt-del option loads a new screen so I can actually see the task manager. I am also comparing to a 9 month old XP installation, not a fresh install but so far that is another thing about win7, it has yet to slow down over time, it might but hasn't yet and over the next few months I guess I'll find out if it does.
The big thing for me in terms of speed though is load times and they are noticeably faster then XP in both games and general use. |

I didn't install Vista until SP1 came out and my experience with Vista has been nothing but positive in terms of stability and compatibility. I find it odd that people are so down on Vista and equally odd that Window 7 is being hailed as the best thing ever while it is still not in final release yet. Sure the pop up balloons are annoying in Vista but that is understandable after the grief MS had with constant security attacks in XP and gullible operators. Most of the changes for change sake features that only confused people who had only just got their head around XP can be easily reconfigured to a classic option or adapted to. (press Alt to get the tools /options menu-whats that about?) XP was built built with getting people with Win98 computers to upgrade in mind and made little use of the extra resources computers built later in the operating systems long life had . Vista should be remembered as the first proper MS OS for a modern computer with multi cores and lots of ram and as a first took a bit of time to optimize from both MS and hardware venders. I believe Windows 7 is largely built on the work done getting Vista to SP2 but because it has a different name it does not come with the baggage of Vistas early development. Yes Win7 has some nice features but so it should or who would go though the grief and expense of an upgrade otherwise. It would still take till 2009 to make Win 7 what it is and without Vista some valuable lessons in what people want from a modern OS would not have been learned. Would I put anything other than Vista on my multi core 4 gig computer until Win7 comes out,no way. I also won't be rushing to make the change either. |

i tried out one of the beta builds... it worked on my s***ty 1.8 ghz celeron 256mb ram craptop... (albeit slowly) could never EVER expect vista to work on it ;) so i guess they kinda streamlined their crappy code or something to make it more accessible to lower end machines. |

Only on the 7000 build so get a later one or update it. |

Only ever use windows to play steam games and TF2 runs flawlessly (which is a massive upgrade from vista)
I'd go ahead and say it runs better than it did on xp. 64bit Win7 MSDN Drivers are impressive also, did not have to install one proprietary driver. |

Vista loathing i think comes from all those people out there with barely enough ram, ageing boards & cpu's trying to run 32bit vista. With a decent amount of ram (4gb+) & a good cpu 64bit Vista (with some tweaking) is quite a good os. I installed the RC of 7 on my IT tech mates recommendation, and have had Windows 7 64bit running on my gaming machine (core i7, 12gb ram, 2X385gtx's Sli) for 3months now with absolutely no problems at all. For the first time in years I can say microsoft have actually done a good job. Vista was a bloated resource hog (looked pretty thats it). 7 is streamlined and runs flawlessly. I recommend everyone DO IT NOW. You'll thank yourself. |

why would anyone thank themselves?
the only reason you took the initial action was because of the perceivable benefits. so in which case it is quite a deliberate and selfish act that was taken. last edited by infi at 18:13:48 21/Sep/09 |

I haven't noticed much of a difference between Vista and Windows 7 apart from a few minor cosmetic changes. I definitely wouldn't say that games run better or worse either. Just seems the same. Maybe its different when you run on s*** hardware... Better than XP, definitely. But I thought Vista SP1 was too. Better than Vista, yes but nothing revolutionary. last edited by Twisted at 18:26:02 21/Sep/09 |

I've noticed an improvement from Vista, and from XP too.
Having said that, my performance in Vista was never that bad anyway. |

Pray the day my work upgrades from XP :'( Alas, I don't think that'll be happening anytime soon.

i doubt my work will be upgrading from xp either. though that really doesn't bother me coz i only spend about 5-10% of my work time using functions of the operating system.. mostly all of my work is done in cad programs. that would also be the case for everyone in the company except the it guy, who isn't going to make his own job more difficult by changing from something that definitely works.

Vista loathing i think comes from all those people out there with barely enough ram, ageing boards & cpu's trying to run 32bit vista. With a decent amount of ram (4gb+) & a good cpu 64bit Vista (with some tweaking) is quite a good os. Is that like saying people who think Skylines are slow own N/A ones but bung some turbos on them and they speed up? I donno, this just struck me as a pretty silly comment. |
