Hi all,

I've just moved house and due to the location of the phone point in the new place, I have to have my wireless router set up in the living room.

The problem is, when streaming from my PC to my xbox in my bedroom, I get heaps and heaps of dropouts (I can't even watch an episode of South Park without it dropping out 2-3 times). There is a less distance from router - xbox in this house than there was in my old house, so I'm just wondering what might be causing this? Is there any way to improve the signal strength without the need to spend lots of cash at all?

I'm using a Netgear Rangemax wireless router, and a netgear wireless access point in the bedroom. My PC is connected to the router via Ethernet.

Thanks.

do you have
av transmitters?
concrete walls?
cordless phones?
powerful microwave ovens?
lots of steel in your walls?

and is everything on the same level?

if oyu answered yes to any of the above questions its time to buy some cable (except for the last question, thats a "no" one)

It's a "no" to everything except the cordless phone, however I had the cordless phone at my old place too.

cordless telephone operates on the exact same frequency as a 802.11 wifi network (2.4ghz)
try changing the channel your device uses

Not all of them. Most of the newer ones do 1.8/1.9 or 5.8GHz.

Might help, but probably not as the 2.4GHz cordless phones usually just abuse the whole frequency range.

I've got a cordless phone sitting right next to my PC and the router is about 1.5m away from it. The base station is probably 3 or 4m away from the router and I've never had any trouble with playing games over wireless. I pity da foo' whose phone interferes with their interwebs.

yeh we've got two seperate cordless phone base stations in our house, both fairly cheap brands from kmart or harvey norman or somewhere, no noticeable issues

Channel change is probably a good idea anyway in case your neighbor has a device on the same channel. Also add fishtanks to spooks list or anything that contains water.

parabol, my points were separated by a \n
changing channel on a wifi device can often help if that channel is over utilised in your area (like default 6)

I'm running a similar setup and I'm getting good HD playback on my 360 over my wireless network.

I've got an Apple Airport Extreme base station (dual band) in the lounge room, and the xbox in my bedroom. It's only an apartment so its not that far. I found running the xbox adapter on wireless-a instead of -g helped (however doesn't sound like your using that), oh and I also got a usb extension cable to put my xbox wireless adapter in a higher position above my tv.

But yeah try moving each wireless point higher or into a better line of sight.

Hi guys,

I changed channel on my cordless phone, and even completely unplugged it. I'm still getting the dropouts while streaming media through the xbox. The thing is, it doesn't lose the network. Immediately after the movie dropping out, I can start playback again, and it'll drop out again in 10 mins or so.

Any other suggestions? Running network cable all over my house isn't an option with a baby that's about to start walking in a few months. On the same token, I don't see why all of my wireless gear was working at my old place (with more distance between points, as well as more concrete), and it won't work properly here. I don't see that as justification to go out and replace all my perfectly working wifi gear just to see if that'll help the cause at all.

Is there a way to test network strength signal on a modded xbox? Because I'm not even sure if the dropouts are due to poor network strength at this stage.

I didn't even think that was an option. There's just a switch on the back saying "Internet" or "Adhoc". As far as I'm aware, I've always had it set to Internet (which is what it's on now). What do you think?

i'd go into your router settings and double check everything looks ok. should be able to access from your browser via 192.168.2.1 or something very close or should be on your documentation. just make sure everything looks normal and try a refresh on your DHCP client list.

also, [depends on your set up EG. if it's in a cabinet] you could get a USB extension so that the wireless sits out the front or somewhere more clear. i did this and got heaps better reception

Can you pick up other wifi networks, such as your neighbours, within your house? If so they could be interfering with your wifi network and, as everyone has suggested, you need to change the channel of your wifi router. You need to jump onto your computer and log into your wifi router then go into the settings and find an option which allows you to change the channel to anywhere between 1 - 13.
Another thing worth trying is to simply move your wireless equipment around, higher and away solid furniture.
