So I did a really really long hike on the weekend. And ever since the toes on my right foot have been numb and tingly (not so much the big toe)
Was hoping it would go away after a while but so far it hasn't...3 days after finishing the hike. So I guess I should probably see someone about it. Was wondering if anyone had experience with such a problem and whether they would recommend a GP or physio or something else? Ta. |

Go see your GP. The younger the better - doctor's have better treatment records the earlier out of med school they are.
Edit - don't wait around any more dude. Go now. You don't want to drop dead from DVT cause you hesitated to see a scientifically trained healthcare practitioner. last edited by BillyHardball at 09:38:04 22/Jul/09 |

Go to the GP and then have them direct you on.
I was considering a physico or chiro. The GP sent me for an MRI and it turns out I have a tear in my labrum (cartridge of the hip) and there is nothing the above could have done for me. only surgery will fix it :( |

You've probably got some nerve entrapment of one of the superficial nerves in your foot from wearing shoes that are too tight +/- foot swelling from the hiking. If this is the case is should gradually resolve but some massage may help. That being said you should go to a GP who can do a focused examination to ensure there's nothing more serious causing your symptoms.

Although secretly I was hoping it would be physio cause they usually massage you...and physio is a short walk from work...doctor is a drive. Was this walk of yours 96km of Kokoda Challenge?Yep. Did you do it? If so how'd you go? |

nice work on doing the kokoda challenge! Cheers. Yeah was very tough...glad I did it though...already planning my prep for next year! So for those who have been hanging on the edge of their seats to find out what was wrong with me...I just spoke to my boss (who is a doctor) and after pricking me with a needle a bunch of times he declared I will live to see another day. He said if it is still around in a week then he will send me to some back dude. Thanks for everyone's advice! |

Was only pretending to be interested in it so I didn't seem ungrateful for your dumb idea in case you were genuinely trying to be helpful. |

I did the practice a few weeks back plus an extra 10km warmup which wasn't too bad. I wanted to do it but I had to do the MS Bris to Bay as i'd already signed up for that.
My brother however did it and has since been sick for the last 3 days (finished at the 33hr mark). He said that his challenge was staying interested in the walk, not the walk itself. Around the 50km mark his team got quite bored and wanted to quit and do something more interesting. However they persisted with it and finished as a team. He'll never do it again. How did you go? |

billy, where did you read/hear about the younger the better.. Would be the other way around.. I'd rather a doctor with real experience, not text book experience. Yeh I guess my statement could be a little misleading. In terms of patient outcomes, doctors perform best in the first few years after they finish med school (maybe after their internship even), and then decrease after that. BUT, this could purely be because doctors go on to specialise, and get harder and harder cases with more difficult problems as time goes on. My original comment was meant to be a little tongue in cheek. We were taught this in a class called "Applied topics in cognitive psychology" during our honours year in psychology. /enter Obes with something like "yeh but you can't trust statistics and what agenda was the lecturer pushing etc etc etc" |

Around the 50km mark his team got quite bored and wanted to quit and do something more interesting. However they persisted with it and finished as a team. He'll never do it again. How did you go?Yeah the walking itself didn't really get painful till about 70km. The first real unpleasant thing for me was trying to stay awake between about 2am and 5am...was a real f***ed feeling wanting to fall asleep while walking. Got to the point where I was going ahead and taking a 1 minute break to shut my eyes a few times. As soon as sun came up though was fine - that's about when the body started hurting. We did OK. Finished in just over 27 hours...one of our team injured herself about half way in (mega hardcore points for finishing...I definitely would have used it as an excuse to pull out)...so we might have got closer to 25 hours without the injury. Aiming for 18 hours next year. That's going to be hard and will take a lot of preparation! |

Wow, that's pretty impressive. 18hrs will be quite difficult, that's an average speed of 6km/h. I would like to do it but I need to find a team. It's a shame you can't just do it yourself.

Isn't that like saying a 20 year musician is worse than a 3 year musician? Sort of - it seems counterintuitive, but think of it this way. The musician with 20 years of experience tried to learn new, obscure instruments each year for the past 17 years, and was constantly challenged to play really difficult pieces with the instruments. Actually, that's a nice analogy :) |

If you're looking for a team still closer to the event let me know...I might know people you could do it with...of course depends on what time you're aiming to do?
18hrs will be quite difficult, that's an average speed of 6km/hha 6km/h average sounds like a walk in the park doesn't it. Unfortunately not the case on this terrain and distance :( |

Well Coochie since you want to play like that, let me also point out that I was actually making an amusing reference to a recent thread filled with controversy about physios vs chiros, and that if you were clever you would realise I was making a joke not suggesting a dumb idea. I tried to be nice by not making fun of you for that, but then you turned out to be a real a****** didn't you.

At the moment I'd aim for about 24hrs. When we did the practice we were averaging 6km/h up until heartbreak/hurl hill.

if you were clever you would realise I was making a jokeactually without even realising it you suggested a plausible idea. Apparently it is likely back related if it doesn't go away soon. Lots of people go to chiro's for back troubles...hence I thought you were being serious. but then you turned out to be a real a****** didn't youYes, yes I did. |

Is it numb first thing in the morning when you wake up ?Yeah it's much more noticeable when I wake up. So are you suggesting it is just the ligaments in the foot are a bit worn from the weekend and this is somehow causing the numbness/tingling? That would seem to make sense to me. And by rest I hope you meant run...cause I just got back from a run. Is rest imperative? It seems to be getting slightly better on it's own...although not sure - maybe I'm just becoming desensitised to the...desensitivity...if that makes sense. |

I did the ligaments in my foot.
I kept walking on it making it worse then it got so bad i couldnt walk and the pain was a real HIGH. Even with the foot up high in the air it was still stellar pain. Doctor said Ligaments can take upto 18months to heal and im at about that stage now. Anti-Inflamatories help too. haha Kat, Dr FaceMan says that could be slightly bulged disc in the back. Dr FaceMan is not a Registered Doctor. |

How awesome, all womens' team did it faster than the all mens' teamI don't want to try to take away from the all womens team that won...but I believe the first team in was actually the all mens team that wins every year...but for some reason one of their members was disqualified or pulled out or something...and to win you need a full team (4). But still an amazing performance...especially given their gender disability :) |

And yes Rev - was a great experience. Requires a lot of training which is often not fun but a good thing to do especially if you have a team of friends.
But really one of the best things I've done in the last 25 years. Ha I forgot to mention that one of my team members did it in deck shoes and holding his water bottle and jumper in his hand. Got some interesting looks and comments from other people donning space age endurance race wear. |
