no doubt the pay is s*** but getting paid to live in another culture for around a year is sometimes the ideal life experience adventure kind of thing for some people.

A mate is in Korea. He gets paid about $500 Australian a week being a tutor for some rich family. He pays for nothing at all, lives in Trump Tower etc etc. So the $500 is basically going out or saving money. He also picks up a few korean chicks during the week to "teach english" to privately and makes extra cash out of that.

$500 free each week after living expenses is pretty damn decent for a holiday.

apparently the pay my mate is getting aint nothing to whinge about .. + experience another culture... sounds like a good use of 12 or more months to me, providing the culture agrees wtih you.

Yer... 75k a year for 6-7 hr days with a f***ton of paid holidays is terrible man, not to mention if you're smart enough do like 5-6 tutes a week @ $50 a pop or more...

If you set it up right.. you get good cash.

Work in Japan is known to be good as you pay less tax there. I read this somewhere. I stayed there for a year. I really want to do this as well but I'm scared my IT degree is going to be totally useless once I get back.

A good one that takes on extra unpaid responsibilities early so they can put it in a resume and be getting paid positions of responsibilty sooner rather then latter ?

They work 40-42 weeks a year, get 4 weeks of "leave" ie. leave loading,
and 6 to 8 weeks of getting pid but not getting a bonus for doing nothing.
They typically have 5 hours contact time a day.

The hard bit of the job is having to deal with modern kids and useless parents, a lot of whom need a wooden spoon and not ADD meds and excuses.

But compared to a nurse or copper, teachers have it easy.

You only get paid holidays if you land permanency with education queensland, that also means they can ship you off to the country whenever they feel like it.

If you dont like that, your working contracts and not getting paid for holidays. I've known teachers who are on 1 year recurring contracts for 3 years.

Teaching is 8hrs a day. I get there at 7:30 and leave at 3:30 if im lucky. Usually find i'm working when i get home too.. my quake live hrs have taken a hit :\

ps. Getting permanency is a mission in itself.

You need a university degree to teach in Japan also.

Ok so basically the SAME as every other grad job, sounds like a raw deal.

Actually I lie, go look up the pay-grade for a junior as a 3d artist, 48k looks like heaven.

So the fact that i live in the same house as a teacher, he's home by 3:30 and he works @ West End. So yer mabye 7hrs if u want to include travel time.

Does some tutoring for some easy cash and easy work. When it comes to the whole man we mark a bunch of s***, he takes a sick day.. so he marks the work and is pretty much free on holidays. Actually i think the most I've seen him work on a hol is mabye 1.5 days.. with a beer in hand going back and foward between TV and marking off some exams.

Also the whole "working with students" doesn't really apply since lets face it, if u didn't want to work with them you wouldn't have been a teacher. Not to mention most people deal with retards on a fairly common basis :) I think i've covered most of the points i wanted to touch.

I normally like reading what Obes has to say but this time he's mistaken. He clearly thinks it's greener outside where he works, without understanding everything. JakeG and Minxy have a clearer idea of how things are. Good teachers work way more than just the 9-3pm. They are often working long after school, on weekends, and during their "holidays".

Never said teachers work 6 hours a day, but if he didn't tutor... guess what he'd be home @ 3:30pm every single day after work. Also some may say keep your work at work and would completely disagree with you.

It also depends on what grade they teach, as 11 / 12 have way less homework then undergrades because teachers aren't retarded and know they if they want to do well they'll probably study which = homework in it's own way.

But guess what, people do jobs different.. he's sitting on 75k or w/e it is, does the hours he needs to.. kids learn what they're supposed to and have fun in the process and he manages to keep all his holidays as holidays.. bloody shocking isn't it?

i'm on my way to school now on 7am train usually get home around 5pm. Only 1st year teachers or retards need to spend whole nights planning s***. First time you teach something it needs prep+thought but 2nd year should be getting closer to routine.

As for holidays, in the last two i've booked flights that leave on the first day and get back the day before, didnt do a blink of work.

Is it true they are going to reduce teachers holidays alot in the coming years? I know someone said that teachers get something like 3 months holidays all up.

11 weeks I believe greazy.

Education needs the large holidays, nobody would do that job for the money with 4 weeks annual leave.
