As stolen from here

Here's what the Facebook settings page has to say:
Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user's friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. These respect all privacy rules.

Turn it off

All you have to do to prevent this is sign in to Facebook and click through to (get ready) -> Settings -> Privacy -> News Feed and Wall -> Facebook Ads -> Appearance in Facebook Ads and click "no one." Unless, of course, you want to be semifamous and have your picture used to push some garbage product or website without your knowledge. (note: when I tried to make this change just now, the site returned an error. oh, and it might not work in Firefox either due to a 'bug.')

I just turned it off with no error

You didn't know this? I think there's another photo site (might be photobucket or flickr) that pretty much says when you sign up you sign over all permission for them to use any of your uploaded pictures in any way they want which means if they want to use them in adverts on other sites or to advertise some random product they can.

Personally I only have two photos on facebook (profile pictures) and they're welcome to use either of them for whatever the hell they want.

Add me, I need friends :(

edit: I tried the thing out of curiosity and it did not work in Firefox 3.5.1 but it did work fine in Safari 4.0.2.

whoop - Yeah, that was flickr. There was the Virgin Mobile "Dump your pen friend" ad campaign that used someone's photos from flickr.

Hahaha, would love to see them use the profile pic I have up as an ad. Don't think many ladies would be clicking on it ;-)

^^ That's probably why it didn't work for me in firefox. I just used Safari and it came up with the little selection box, can't say for IE though I didn't try it.
