Hi All

Got a customer in QLD that has an adsl modem thats playing up - have done as much as I can remotely but its now not allowing any LAN to internet NAT so I cant get into it anymore from Sydney.

Customer is in Meadowbrook - is there anyone here who does IT work on the side and is able to go onsite to this customers site to take a look?

Tasks will be
- Check out why the router is not NAT'ing connections/diagnose/fix
- Install new firmware onto router to assist with VPN passthrough issues

Work onsite with this customer may continue in bits and pieces ongoing so may turn into a regular source of $.

If you are able and want to help out with this, please reply ASAP or call me (Dave) on 1300 766 277. You would need to send me an invoice for payment... will pay a reasonable rate, no $150 an hour responses please.

Thanks!

I'll do it if you lend me your goat for the week.

edit: What kind of customer is it? residential? commercial? It's been raining a bit up here so maybe it's actually the phone line buggered & not the modem have you had them get telstra to do a line check (or whoever their phone lines serviced by)?

I know my phone lines go screwey in the rain & to a noob it might seem like the modem itself is playing up if it can't connect.

whoop, payment can be exchanged for goats and/or favours from obes mum. The router is a dlink DSL-G604T so its a goat modem.

Commercial customer (construction), the dsl is fine as I was able to connect... in trouleshooting the issue the modem had a config save and reboot and after that clients cannot connect to the internet. They can get to the router interface which shows dsl pvc as connected so the modem connects OK.

If you are able to do the job then please call me on 1300 766 277 and we can chat!

dont need an abn or gst etc... payment would just need a sheet of paper marked Invoice with your name, details and the service. ABN's, business names etc arent needed for you to trade as yourself.

The job's probably not worth it if the dollars are on par with what obes mum charges.

As a part time thing, is it worth doing onsite support for personal computers? I was thinking of doing it part time around my area.

If it wasn't so far away I'd help but if you can;t get anyone out there, id just reset to stock then reconfig remotely, can't hurt?

family and friends = easy to get along with but pay bad
random home customers = hard to get along with and pay bad
random small corporate clients = painful but pay good, just slow
woking for a large corporation = where it's at.

Your friends and family pay? Half your luck. I'm doing it wrong.

I flat out refuse to help anyone except closest family and friends now. I reckon by 40yo I will go computer-free.

spook we should start a business together.

No seriously, what suburb do you live in. Do it part time and charge them per job. I think it would work.

You get paid? Damn! I just fixed one that took me 2 days to get rid of all the spyware & virusses & get it working again. Damn thing took about an hour just to boot up & be usable. It was a 2.5ghz cpu with a gig of ram o_0. On the up side absolutely no data was lost or corrupted.

formatting a users machine is usually the last option, because guaranteed you cant put everything back how it was, and that means complaints and followup calls and what not;

usually you just have to keep plugging away with the cleaning, usuing the usual apps (ad-aware, spybot, ms defender, reg cleaners, virus scanner of choice)

and hope they havent got anything too nasty or ingrained;

if you make the effort you can find specific tools to get rid of most of the worst of the nasties:

for beginner users, ill always throw firefox on their box also

Hah - I always go the format option if I have to do this s***.

Maybe that's why family and friends stopped asking me to fix their computers?

Nice one.

Pro tip I've learnt the hard way:
Always change the Firefox shortcut to use the Internet Explorer icon because of this: "the big blue 'e' is how I get on the internet, where did it go!?"

Surely you've been around long enough to know that you won't really get anything resembling a decent post from QGL, right?

Yeah man
you never think of all the silent lurkers
but in the past i've come across three people who lurk QGL and never post, and don't even have an AGN ID. QGL isn't as insular as you can be lead to believe.

I just used whatever tools I could download from the internet. Luckily the crap that was on it wasn't the bad kind that infects every exe it can find so I just used avira + avast + spybot S&D & manually removing any processes I didn't like the look of.

I've also got a couple of those ultimate boot cd things & some live linux discs for when it's really fubar & I just want to copy the my documents folder & email store house over & nuke the entire drive from orbit.

I also have a bunch of hard drive diagnostic things on cd/usb stick to see if the slowdowns are caused by viruses or a hard drive about to go belly up. Just get seatools & the wd diag things.

and yeah, I didnt expect much from the usual crowd :)

I would have probably had a go at it if it wasn't commercial. I don't wanna find myself liable for loss of income or something utterly retarded like some people try these days. :)
