In the wake of our scathing review of Super Mario Tennis and its lack of true Wii utilisation for the tennis genre, Sega have just announced Virtua Tennis 2009 for Wii would be taking full advantage of the precision add-on for the Wii Remote, the Wii Motion Plus. The Wii MotionPlus feature allows players greater control than ever before, with the Wii responding more accurately to the swings and shots of each individual player. With Wii MotionPlus and Virtua Tennis 2009 the shots you play in your living room are mimicked by your on screen character, so that satisfying cross court winner, or drop shot followed by the roar of the crowd feels so much more rewarding.Whether or not there really is a deeper level of control with the add-on or not will remain to be seen, but at this stage we're looking forward to checking out. |

If this was as compelling as they are trying to make out, it could get me to dust off my Wii.

Hmm if it's as good as they say, bring on the 1st person cricket game! Batting would be awesome if you could play proper shots.

I've been very, very happy with Top Spin 3 for Wii (lack of online play and career mode notwithstanding...). It takes quite a bit of playing to get the hang of it, but the translation from sport to computer game has been done really well. I enjoy watching tennis matches on TV, and none of the various other 'tennis' games for the Wii have ever given the same sort of excitement that a good live match does, until Top Spin 3. While the accuracy sometimes leaves something to be desired, it is a huge amount of fun, and very rewarding to be able to nail a tricky serve, or send your opponent stumbling after a smash, or even standing like an idiot as your ball slams into them. It's the first Wii title in a long time that has got me playing for more than an hour straight, and it's currently $39 at JB! If Virtua Tennis 2009 is anything like that, but with more accurate controls, it should be amazing. |
