What do you define as 'start-up' Are we talking the time from POST to when you get a log-in screen, or are we factoring in the actual log-in process until everything's loaded and the system becomes actually usable?

XT's weren't 12mhz

did you try unplugging all usb devices
i was rly serious, sometimes my machine will just hang on post/boot while trying to probe some usb device which is too stupid to realise it was left plugged in while rebooting |

did you try unplugging all usb devices Actually, he is being serious. It's caused by legacy support being enabled in BIOS. Best example of this is if you have say, a printer that has a card reader in it. If enabled, your mainboard will poll each and every USB port in the hopes that it will find an alternative boot device on it and when it can't, it waits for a timeout signal on the port before polling the next one. The mainboards built in USB ports seem to have very short timeout period so you don't notice it as much if nothing is attached to them. Easiest way to fix this is to disable legacy USB support in BIOS. Only need it if your trying to boot from a thumb drive or an external HDD with a cutdown OS on it. |

Yep. As said then, disconnect USB devices if that's where it's hanging.

It was a Seagate sv35.2 750gb hdd that i bought for a security dvr which i tested and left in my media PC that was the problem. Tried to get this drive working which I bought of ebay probably a year ago. I recently removed it to put some stuff on mate's HDD and the boot up was instant. This 750gb drive which i have never been able to use was the culprit and I'd be lucky to get it exchanged or refunded now.
So no USB dramas tequila. |

I recently had two PC's start to do this oddly. One was after I upgraded speakers of all things, the only way I could get it back to speed (After messing with it for days) was a re-install.
The other PC was even odder, it started doing it out of the blue (10 minute + bootup to desktop). In the end I upgraded (ran test software etc but couldn't find any issues) and it's all good now. I had a friend around the same time bring his PC to me with the same issue, his was fixed with a re-install. Seems to be going around atm :) |

Easiest way to fix this is to disable legacy USB support in BIOS. Don't you need legacy support if you're using a usb keyboard? |
