Crytek have announced a new CryENGINE in anticipated of demonstrating it to potential licensees at GDC in a couple of weeks: “CryENGINE 3 is a revolutionary change from our previous PC-only engines – and we’re applying a similar revolution to the service we provide to developers using the software to create extraordinary games. CryENGINE 3 will set the benchmark for complete game engine solutions in performance, and services to game engine licensees and their players. We’ve been preparing a long time for CryENGINE on consoles and we’re confident that Crytek will again amaze developers at GDC.” added Carl Jones, Director of Business Development CryENGINE.No screenshots or video available just yet but I suspect that'll come pretty soon. Some more information is available in the press release. |

If it's being designed to use consoles as well as pc's, it's more than likely it won't have as good visuals as cryengine 2?

Why would being on a console degrade the PC experience? Last I checked, very few PC games looked as good as Killzone 2.

Heh, I remember back before Crysis came out, in interviews with the Crytek guys they were staunchly supporting PC and waving the flag for PC gaming and were dead against consoles. Now its all "We love you consoles!". Guess you gotta go where the money is.

Why would being on a console degrade the PC experience? Last I checked, very few PC games looked as good as Killzone 2.Developers would primarily target a static and less powerful platform as their optimum settings which would result in less demanding games being produced. You probably wouldn't see games like Crysis pushing the limits of PC hardware (which was asinine anyway if you want to hit the largest market) which is what he was lamenting. I imagine it's easier to aim for one quality setting and optimise for that exclusively, which is likely the reason Killzone 2 looks better than similar PC games to you. That doesn't mean consoles are more powerful than PCs though, just that they're less difficult to develop for by virtue of all having the same hardware and no incompatibilities between hardware vendors to worry about (along with less piracy reducing the need for problem-creating DRM software). So in theory, it is more than likely going to result in an engine less powerful than Cryengine 2 because it has to run optimally on the XBOX360 and PS3 instead of optimally on quad-sli with quad core processors and such. |

Like it matters. We need new FPS games to be less boring, not prettier.

We need new FPS games to be less boring, not prettier.Agreed. Spend more cash on improving stories and AI and less on bling. Of course, that'll cancel out the console market because most of the grunt in consoles is towards the bling factor. |

I never said that they were more powerful, just that they're able to pull off impressive graphics as good as a high-end PC. I doubt they'll be taking their new engine backwards. I'll give them benefit of the doubt that they know what the f*** they're doing. |

So many people on various forums and news sites have miss-interpreted this announcement. This isn't a console only release of the cryengine 2. It is an updated cryengine 2, with support for consoles and future PCs.
Also this doesn't mean crytek are going to release future crysis's on consoles, they're just providing an engine to developers who want to licence it for their own games. Expect improved graphics for PCs, console support and greater flexibility to allow for other genres to use the cryengine. |

Expect improved graphics for PCs, console support and greater flexibility to allow for other genres to use the cryengine.Be careful about what you expect though. I'm sure people expected the same from Unreal Engine 3, seeing as Epic was previously primarily a PC developer. Every UE3 powered game I've played on PC so far as felt very much like a console port and really not playing to the strengths of the platform, Unreal Tournament 3 being the prime example. |

Mirrors edge is UE3 and felt like it was a 'pc' game, at least in the sense that control with the mouse and keyboard felt fairly natural. It seems simpler and more likely that ports feel like ports becuase that is what they are? Design and playtesting on console, with gamepads in mind must result in quite different products. This logic is hard to really explain cause I cant think of any UE3 PC games :P |

Like it matters. We need new FPS games to be less boring, not prettier. Damn right! I've been so bored lately I started playing the original Quake again. I actually rather liked crysis for the most part, I liked being able to sneak around or if need be run amok with rocket launchers. In fact, I might go play it right now! edit: \/\/ Yeah it didn't run too great on my pc, 25fps I think with everything turned up high so I wandered around for a while looking at all the pretty trees & stuff, then just turned graphics settings all the way down low and went nuts. I do that with every game though, I don't care what it looks like I'd rather just enjoy the story or if it's multiplayer enjoy getting my ass handed to me. last edited by whoop at 02:23:36 13/Mar/09 |

Yeah, I agree about Crysis. I thought it was actually pretty enjoyable. I didn't play it all the way through, purely because it didn't run that well on my PC, but I really enjoyed all of the sneaking and super speed, etc.

Why are they making another engine when hardly anyone can f***ing run Crysis at max settings yet??!The typical stupid response many idiots had with Crysis. This isn't just a GFX upgrade, it's a functionality upgrade Don't turn the game up to max settings, it looks better than most games even when set to lower levels. Max setting was for people with dual graphics cards or future GFX cards, not for people with 8800s. For the record I played through the game fine on a 6800GT, and now I have a 4870 which does max settings fine too. Does anyone actually license the Cryengine though? Have any games come out, apart from Crytek games, that actually use it? Game licensees * Crysis - Crytek, Finished, Release November 16, 2007 in Europe and the U.S. (2007). * Crysis Warhead, uses an upgraded version of the engine. * Game based on new intellectual property- Crytek, in development (2008). * New, possibly non-fps game- Crytek, in development (TBA). * Entropia Universe - signed a license agreement on July 25, 2007. Expected to be ready mid-2009.[4] * Merchants of Brooklyn[5] - Paleo Entertainment, in development (TBA). * Lightspire: Fortunes Web[6] - Lukewarm Media, in development (TBA). * The Day by Reloaded Studios[7] * Blue Mars - Avatar Reality, inc., in development (TBA). * Forged by Chaos - Panzar Studio, in development (TBA). * Vigilance (Military Training Game) - The Harrington Group, Inc. (Not for public release).[8] * New MMORPG - XMLGames, in development (TBA).[9] * Timesplitters 4 - A speculated title to use the technology made by Crytek UK.(TBA) Other licensees * IMAGTP - Architectural program to show what buildings would look like before they are built * Ringling College of Art and Design - Educational program * Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences - The university uses the engine in their Game Development course. [1] * Games Academy - Games Academy will use the engine in its teaching, with students given the chance to build their projects using the studio's technology. [2] Also the next stalker is said to be using the engine. |

So no, no games except Crytek ones have come out that use it. Quite a few in production though, will be interesting to see how people who aren't Crytek use it.
Pretty awesome that universities are using it to teach people game development though. |

I'm excited to see what sort of stuff Free Radical/Crytek UK come out with using the engine. As s***ty as Haze was, the Timesplitters series was absolutely awesome.

Have any games come out, apart from Crytek games, that actually use it?" Is "No." |

Like it matters. We need new FPS games to be less boring, not prettier. the translation to that is: we want more free s***. we're gonna get it dude. Corps will always undervalue the people with the brains behind the ops. thay can, yet never will change. moneys make it so. that means we win =) last edited by koopz at 17:38:15 15/Mar/09 |
