My new computer (core duo e8500) has a new western digital 1TB hdd (c:) in it & recently I pulled a slightly older western digital 1TB hdd out of my older P4 computer & put it in my new computer (e:). when i copy files from c: to e: the tranfer rate is really slow :( ... like a 1GB file takes about 30minutes!
i copied all the data off e: & reformated it... first quick format & then, when that didn't work, i did a full format.. still the same problem. i am going to try a 400GB sata hdd from my P4 just to test the sata port/mobo of the new computer tonight & maybe put the 1TB back into the P4 to test it there. any other ideas? |

are they both sata? how are they cabled in? any weird flags on the hdd in windows device manager maybe suggesting that for whatever reason it's not in 32bit access mode or something? funky bios settings for whichever controller it's plugged into, if you have a mobo with say 2 raid sata ports + 2 plain sata ports?

New computer eh? Are the two HDDs attached to the same controller, or is one of them on a seperate controller? Just thinking there could be a driver issue at work here.

both hdds are sata & plugged into individual sata2 ports on the mobo. mobo is a MSI P45-NEO-F INTEL P45 LGA775. the hdd appears as healthy in the disk manager & i haven't seen any odd flags or errors.
i'll have a double check tonight that i have used the right sata port but i am reasonably sure i used sata0 for the primary hdd (c:) & sata1 for e:. the mobo has 6 x sata2 ports so i might just try another one before i start swapping drives over. i haven't had a good look in the bios either... other than they both detect... i'll have a squiz at that too tonight :D |

Transfer rates between drives are pretty hit and miss at work, some will go super fast pushing around 30mb/s and I'm currently working on another where it's doing 2mb/s.
