Topic: Jobs for not-so-smart people - Part 1, Subway

In the mail the other week I received a sheet full of vouchers for my favorite lunch destination, Subway. On this sheet were all kinds of offers - free second 6 inches, "Free Upgrade", "Free breakfast"... that kind of thing. So yesterday for lunch I headed into my local favorite, and took with me a "Free Upgrade" voucher. The text on this one read: "Purchase a Subway 6-inch sub and a medium drink and we'll upgrade you to a Subway Foot Long sub free".

Cool I thought, cheaper than normal lunch. So I proceeded to order my normal footlong, complete with swiss and pineapple goodness, and eventually made it to the register, where I handed him my newly acquired voucher - "Can I use this?", I asked?

El geniouso carefully read over it once, twice, and then looked up and pointed to it, saying to me, "No, this is for a six-inch". Briefly I tried to explain what was going on, but he couldn't understand: No, you just give me the footlong and medium drink, and charge me for a 6-inch and medium drink.

This was still confusing to him, so I eventually gave up.

So my question is this: Despite the recession, is the sandwitch-selling business really seeing that much a lack of skilled labour that those employed cannot interpret store vouchers?

No see you ordered wrong.

You should have ordered a six inch and drink and then at the counter presented the voucher. At this point they will throw the 6 inch in the bin and prepare you a 12 inch.

I suspect penis related gags to enter this thread.

For example: 'You love a 12 incher at lunch time.'

Can't wait for part 2.

At the supermarket they had an amazing special on beer (NZ supermarket, where you can buy beer in there). A 6 pack of Pilsner Urquel for $5. That's NZ dollars, so even less than that for us. So I decided to buy three boxes of the stuff (there was a full car so I couldn't get any more) and at the check out we had a bit of a delay, because the lady couldn't quite work out how many 6 packs it was, as it was sold by the 6 pack. 4 per box, three boxes = 12 six packs of beer. But she had to count them individually, to get to 12, twice, then got the manager person to check it was right. Hmmm.

I don't drink pilsner anymore. Totally over it.

couple years back i scored 50+ subway vouchers in the bins at the toowong post office. i guess most people chuck them out when they collect their mail. me and the guys at work used them up pretty quickly.

i went a cafe the other day, not my normal one but one i do visit regularly.

i got some dinner and a coffee and it cost $16.20 or something.

So when I go up to pay I give the girl a $50 note and $1.20 in coinage. She types in $21.20 into the register so straight away I take notice.

The register says $4.00 as the change as you would expect so she gives me $4 in coin and a $20 note. I then look at her waiting and she asks "whats up?" and i said "I gave you a $50" and she agrees and just waits. Finally i say "you have short changed me $10" and she disagrees. So then I explain it through, 3 times before she gets it and gives me another $10.

My question is, if you are poor at maths, or having a bad math day, why not just put in the right amount into the register? Why even try to do simple arithmetic?

LOL! I got a good one... Over xmas i went down to Sydney to catch up with some mates. f*** they have some genius' there as well as stupid drinking laws. No shots and s***. So im at the bar, and im i order a beer, scotch and coke for this bird, and i say ill have a glass of glenlivett on ice.

Bartender bird: I cant serve you that.
Me: Why not?
Bartender: Its top shelf
Me: So?
Bartender: Its more expensive.
Me: (now very bewildered) Yes, I know, Im happy to pay more for it.
Bartender: But its top shelf.
Me: Yes, so?
Bartender: Its got more alchol.
Me: (Now getting grumpy and thirsty) I dont mean to tell you how to do your job, but theres a little number on the side of the bottle followed by a % symbol. Thats the alcholic content. You just gave me a cheaper house scotch and coke, why the f*** cant you give me that one, just less ice?
Bartender: You have 2 drinks, you cant get 3. NSWs law...

Well... she sure showed me!

I get subs twice a week and there is a big difference in the quality sub Vs the Newb sub maker.
Newb sub maker will put way too much sauce, skimp on salad apart from way too much lettuce. Put more salt on ur sub than the dead sea has. Then incorrectly charge you.
I pretend to not know what i want till i see a true Subway Artist.
Subs are NOT sammys.

AS for incorrect change ... Ive noticed that the average shop attendant does not know basic maths and its best to just hand them Dollar notes and wait for change. Any deviation from this plan always ends up in long discussion.

I love Seafood subs with Sweet Chilli and seafood sauce and Pepper.
Brinh it home and pop it in the Freezer for 15 mins.

If the Victorian fires had destroyed nothing but Beetroot farms, we would be carrying those fire bugs on our shoulders through the main street.

As for pineapples, they belong in fruit salad or as part of a tropical juice drink. Anyone who eats hot pineapple or pineapple on a burger or pizza is one step away from a s*** muncher.

No offense to s*** munchers out there. Actually, on second thought, offense to you. Offense to all of you people who eat s***.

Beetroot Rules, end of story.

Pineapple on the other hand is a curly one. It shouldn't be on burgers and or anything hot really but in it's natural habitat of fruit salads etc it's all good.

Tomato is okay on sandwiches but blergh in salads - as long as it is put between toppings and not against the bread.

wouldn't the change when paying for something that costs $16.20 with $21.20 be $5? More to the point, how did you miss this, when it was obviously the reason you gave her the extra $1.20?

On topic, subway rocks, but newb employees are the bane of my life. Rarely short changed, but the quality of the sub differs hugely depending on who makes it.

Also, I don't understand everyones obsession with bacon. Surely not EVERYONE is in love with it???

Very rarely have Subs over here because the price is usually quite high, and they aren't typically high quality. However, on my way back from the gym the other day I found a cache of vouchers sitting on a ledge outside a pub, and snatched at the opportunity.

I agree with the pineapple - doesn't belong on a savory meal in my opinion. What's worse is they want to shove sweet corn on your sub/pizza/everything in the UK - like really load the s*** out of your sandwich with it. If they could somehow get baked beans in there too I'm sure they would.

I dont know, bacon is nice on burgers ... not all of them but there are some that are good with it. Ie. dutch hamburgers that cost 10 euro's a pop. Bacon on chickenburgers doesnt work for me though.

pinapple + beetroot or anything remotely sweet off too

I wondered what ever happened to them, assumed they went arse up. Never had one though.

Are they the joint that was saying that they toast them (before subway did this)? So then Subway brought in it's own toasting machines to compete?

And who was the genius at KFC that though adding a hashbrown to an already fat laden burger was a good idea? But I guess I do sometimes stuff chips in the Spacca's burger.

I tried that popcorn chicken when it first came out and it tasted like complete ass. Haven't eaten KFC for a few years now. Most times when I ordered a chicken burger it had grisly bits in it so I'll never eat them again. KFC chips would be the only thing I'd buy if I ever went back.

I had a similar situation at Woolies once.

Cash reg busted... oh this isn't working... time to add up the old fashioned way *pulls out calculator*

Old fashioned involves pencil, paper and a brain

She was not a youngun either, a uhm "mature Woolies employee"

How would they know the price of each item?

"Price check please on these 57 items".

I think we might have found a topic with the potential to be more controversial than Quake 3 vs CS|QuakeWorld. Good thing it hasn't spilled over into other threads yet.

I don't remember the specifics anymore, it was probably several fruits/vegetables she couldn't find the magic button for and had to look up the price on their fresh produce price list.

+1

Also, I love that KFC is constantly trying new things. But I miss that chicken they used to have with the salt'n'vinegar flavoring - that was the best! Also, despite being against potato on bread, I think anything with a hash brown sounds awesome...

Went to Dominoes once and got some pizzas and it came to $17. Gave them $20.

The fat pimply voice-braking-every-2-words kid pulled out this massive calculator. Spent 20 seconds on it. then gave me 30c.

I asked him to try again, another 20 seconds, and i finally got my $3.

Also had one where it came to 5.35, gave her $10 and then 5 seconds later tried to give her 40c so i would get a $5 note and a 5c coin instead of a heap of coins. Spent at least 3 minutes with her trying to explain how the extra 40c meant i could have a note. Ended up giving up and getting a bunch of coins back.

I came back through Sydney International Airport this morning and had to go through the LAME Qantas domestic transfer thing. Basically you come out through customs (with all your bags) then have to lug your s*** to a different check-in desk to throw your bags in.

I got there about 45 mins before my flight and was a bit worried I wouldn't make it, but the girl at the door looked at my boarding pass and goes "oh just go this way to the express queue"... I thought "sweet I can skip the line", then walked around the way she indicated (which, incidentally, was the single longest route to the front counter, probably by a factor of 2), and got into line behind a couple people.

There was some problem with the ticket machine, but rather than move the people waiting in the EXPRESS QUEUE, who were there because their FLIGHTS WERE ABOUT TO LEAVE, the chick there spent ages f***ing around fixing the machine.. occasionally she'd look at the queue and ask someone what flight they were on and then tell them they'd missed it. While we were all standing around staring f***ing incredulously at this bitch, ALL the other queues were churning through their checkins - it would have been faster for all of us just to have lined up in the regular queue. At least 5 people in front of me missed their flights when I think they should have been able to make it if they'd actually used the Express queue the way it should have been.

I just made my flight but I would have been f***ing livid had I missed it. I have massive problems with s***tily managed queues in general but in this case it was such an embarrassing clusterf***. I normally <3 Qantas people but this chick had a serious attitude problem and was being completely unhelpful and almost rude to passengers (bearing in mind these people had just found out they were going to miss a flight, which is, IMO, a big f***ing deal).

I don't want to cast aspersions on her intelligence, but it was pretty clear that the 'express' queue was anything but and it should have been instantly corrected by moving these people into a queue that was actually getting processed.

I can see how that was *vaguely* related to this topic, but it didn't really belong in a thread about useless subway servers?

the thread isn't principally about subway servers; its about not-so-smart people and their failure to display adaptability when performing basic, simple job functions

I avoid KFC and fast food chicken in general. Heard too many stories about dodgy chicken (for example, an abscess inside a chicken when someone went to bite it... f***ing hideous).

I'm with troggles, I arrived from Seoul into Sydney and had to do the f***ing piece of s*** transfer to the domestic terminal with all my s*** and I got shoved into a queue which wasn't even related to what I wanted. Somehow when I said "Hey I have to do a transfer to a domestic flight to Brisbane" meant "Oh this guy wants to transfer to another international flight".

After getting to the counter and told I was in the wrong area I had to hightail it over to the transfer area which somehow was broken so had to go back to some buses and I ended up at the domestic terminal where my flight was delayed over an hour and then another 45minutes when I got on board.

From then on if I flew into Sydney I made sure I get a connecting international flight from Syd to Brisbane so I can do the customs dance when I'm leaving airports for good instead of half way through.
