Seems to be a lot of Netbook's on the market these days. I've got a full size laptop for the office/home, but need a little portable one for when I visit client sites to setup PC's and DVR's.

I'm looking at the HP's, Eeepc or even the Dell. The MSI Wind's look way too plastic Mac for me.

Any of you guys have one?

MSI Wind here and I much prefer it to the EEE I was looking at. Samsung (NC10?) I think looks the best now but wasn't around when I got mine. But I'd be holding off a little if you can, HP Mini 2040 is coming with a 1366 x 768 res version in mid march and the extra real estate would be awesome (1024x600 can be a little limiting with a few things height wise). Can also get 3g wireless + even better battery life on most of the next gen netbooks just around the corner.

I think netbooks are the ultra small basic laptops with stripped down features for basic internet, office apps etc and start at $500.

Macbooks are the real deal at $2k?

These look interesting also http://jkontherun.com/2009/01/06/quick-peek-at-msis-u115-hybrid-x-slim-320/. Some of those battery life claims seem amazing if that's what's to come. I like the idea of dual storage, running from SSD, but able to power up a SATA drive when needed via a function key for extra storage.

I've been wanting to upgrade my EeePC 701, but I just can't see the point atm.

If I was setting up DVR equipment I'd go for a bigger screen than what a netbook provides.

From what I've seen I like the Dell mini9 the best for ultraportability, although the keyboard is still a little on the small/annoying side. The HP ones seem to have the best keyboards, but they're also by far the most expensive.

I'd definitely recommend going to JB as they tend to have a wide variety of the options (except for Dell) so you can check out which one looks/weighs/feels the best for you.

Nats just picked up one of the new eeePC thingies which I think he's relatively happy with and he's done a lot more research than me so hopefully he'll drop in with some feedback too.

I'm looking at getting one soon as well. Mainly to take to uni to take notes.. and also just around the house to check net quickly or whatever.

A couple of questions to anyone with experience with them:

How well do most of the options handle playing movie files such as DivX/Xvid stuff?

What's the difference between SSD and your regular HDD? Is SSD just less fragile, faster access times etc?

Thanks for info guys. Btw, by DVR setup I mean just for configuring the Lan and confirming remote viewing access.

Looks like the HP is out, maybe not herer though. I'll pop in JB and see what I can find.

Scratch that on the HP front, the 1366x768 res models aren't due in USA til march.

got a 1000h late last year...

tis good, battery life is average, till you turn down the brightness on the screen - then its very impressive, can upgrade to 2gb ram for $50, good size hdd (160), will play just about any movie/dvd but not 1080 stuff.

the keyboards are an issue, they are a bit on the smallish side even for my average sized hands. it is 95% the size of a normal 15inch lappy keyboard so they say, but its an issue sometimes with typing.

best lappy i've ever bought.

edit: screen res is cruddy.
