The F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin singleplayer demo has landed a bit earlier than expected - you can download it locally from AusGamers right now. The blurb:
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2005 smash hit game, F.E.A.R., is a blend of advanced visceral combat mixed with seamless game pacing set inside a sinister and paranormal universe that begins shortly before the ending of F.E.A.R. A Special Forces squad is on a routine mission when the city of Auburn is rocked by a supernatural explosion. Alma, a girl with immense power and a thirst for revenge, has unleashed her wrath upon the city and thrown it into chaos. The squad must combat enemy forces and the supernatural as they struggle to find a way to stop Alma and uncover the mysterious forces arrayed against them before it’s too late.
The same demo is also now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners, however PS3 users can only currently gain access this via the Qore paid subscription service.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin is due to hit PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Australia on February 11 2009. For more media and details stop by our detailed game page or check out our recent exclusive interview with Project Art Lead Dave Matthews right here in the AusGamers video library.

Ok so finished playing through the demo. first thing, wtf letterbox gaming? second, that grown up alma is super f***ing creepy. Bit where you walk through the hallway and seeing something reflect off water, then spin around and BAM.

1920x1200 max everything and it runs mabye 30 - 50fps which is awesome all things considered. Usualy when I play a demo its along the lines of

"oh thats pretty... huh, that was cool... ok don't like this but this could turn out to be a pretty good game"

All I can say for this game is f***ing incredible. Looks like they've taken the spooky, s***-your-pants moments from #1 and injected them with some halucinagentic drugs. The part in the school where its nearly pitch black and there is all that noise of things getting thrown around the hall, with all the lockers banging shut... holy s***. Playing it with headphones on is the way to go. No second thoughts about it, this game deserves my money. Well done Monolith.

Parts I liked

- School. That whole area was so god damn creepy
- Weapons look pretty awesome and seem to be rather funky. Like the new combat shotgun
- not sure if its possible everywhere but partialy destroyable terrain? In my FPS? f*** yeah. Noticed that part of a pillar was blown off when I threw a grenade near it.
- General atmosphere is incredibly creepy and works so well

Things i'm not too hot on though

- flash light is nearly useless. A zippo lighter would produce more light
- not a HUGE fan of the reworked clone soldiers but i'll deal with that
- long ass load times when you load last saved point. Oh boy will you die in this game, and I don't want to have to wait 3 min each time between attempts. #1's was only a few seconds.

EDIT - On a 2nd play through I actualy don't mind the new look of the clone soldiers. I rather like them actually but I don't like their voice. #1 was great because clone voices had a slight static filter over them of something that made it sound like it was coming through a headset or something. Oh well.

Also despite how critical I was about the power armor thing at first, I rather enjoy it. While it does kill the horror mood a little it comes down to "is it fun?" and yes... yes it is indeed. The demo is so fast paced that I just hope the full game isn't like that.

I guess you don't NEED to play the first, but at least read up about the story on wiki or else it will leave you a bit "wtf?"

ViscoS: Thanks mate, still ironing out the bugs with it, I think all the hardware is so new that drivers have lots of catching up to do.

Sc00bs: Haha hardly Maccas mate, although I do need to stay out of that place more often, this machine is testiment to what a good credit rating will get you :P

It's just as bad as those that take out a loan to buy a car, and i'm talking about before they even wrap it around a pole.

Perhaps he meant credit history. You need a good credit history to get a home loan and the type of credit card they are willing give you silver/gold/platinum etc etc.
However it wouldn't be hard to finance a rig like that on credit, but I have to agree, why would you.

It'll probably pay to play through the first one. It's a great game and you'd be doing yourself a favour to pick up both the original game and the expansions.

If you don't then the previous suggestion for trawling wikipedia for back story would definitely be essential.

Forget the expansions if you're concerned about story. Monolith already said that the story lines from the expansion are being treated as if they were never made.

Just had a bash of it on the xbox 360.

Intense atmosphere. Those Mechwarrior type things are awesome.

Haha I didn't expect to spark such contraversy! I had no idea making a comment like that would bring on the bank haters :P I was talking about a credit rating with the missus, ie: she let me get it... lol..
Im lucky enough to have a decent job where I walked into Umart and gamedude (2 best places in Aus for pc parts Btw) and whacked down cash.. we are only talking like $3000 not millions..
