Topic: VPN Router, reliable model?

We've moved into a new workshop so Im setting up the new office.

Will need VPN access from home and since its only a 3 man operation those nifty Routers with VPN firmware should do the trick nicely. I assume so having never used a VPN Router.

Any complaints or recommendations on models to stick with would be great thanks.

depending what kind of internets you've got (adsl, ethernet, cable etc)
thres a range of cisco gear that will do it beautifully

other than that i'd suggest a lucent brick or something similar - blackbox type solution with an easy web interface

if you want cheap and nasty you can use a wrt54 with DD-WRT. a bit more sensible would be a linksys rv082. Might be worth looking into OpenVPN as a solution as well.

I always steer clear of D-Link and Linksys now because I've had one of each fail on me. I like the Netgear stuff lately.

if you want something that's real reliable and don't mind spending the money, draytek. otherwise billion or netgear.

I've had the opposite experience.

D-Link and Linksys router/switch hardware has never failed me. Netgear is the only one that has.

So I wouldn't draw any conclusions, sample size is too small.

Linksys are great I reckon. I feel sorry for anyone who rings their helpdesk however.

Billion 7404VGPM
Or one of the Draytek models

I have seen WAY too many Dlink, Netgear, Netcomm, and even Linksys boxes dead at customer sites. They have typically cheap plug packs that die and take out the router when they blow.

Indeed. I think what we need here is a full-factorial DOE to test the design space. *cough*

Nah, you know how it is - something breaks, you tend not to buy it again. No doubt my Netgear will break - and then I will have to cut all access to the intratubes or face going back to my 2800 baud modem sitting in the cupboard. Does anyone know some good BBS numbers in VIC?

well i have tested

2 d link routers
1 d link modem
1 speedtouch modem
3 billion routers
4 netgear routers
2 cisco routers

dlink routers are rubbish when coming down to port forwarding and all the other stuff you would like too do

netgear were solid for a few years then just died...

billions seem to be good and stable but lots of firmware changes so they are always getting better

speedtouch modems are great they just work... same as the cisco router
