I think anytime after 8am. It sorta depends on the area you live in.
Otherwise, you might as well wait until 5pm when it is getting cooler. Screw that freaks that mow at 12:00pm on a 32deg day! |

Mow in the afternoon, better for the grass, better for neighbours, less likely to result in heat stroke.

start mowing sonQFT. Depends. It's illegal to do it before 7am, ever. I wouldn't do it before about 8 or half past on a weekend, 9 if you're a nice neighbour. Personally, i like to mow the grass just before sunset, there's usually more of a breeze then than the still morning. Screw that freaks that mow at 12:00pm on a 32deg day!Cheaper than going to the gym... last edited by MrHardware at 09:08:28 14/Dec/08 |

8am. If your neighbourhood is anything like mine, as soon as you hear one mower/whipper snipper going, the rest start too. I like to think of it as the sunday morning choir.

After lunch is the time for mowing the yard. However if you are one of those a******s that uses a leaf blower afterwards you deserve to tied down to a meat ants nest and then beaten.

Or you can just do it late in the afternoon :D |

It's less hot in the morning than it is in the afternoon, so I'd be doing it at 9am+
Thankfully I live in townhouse complex...no lawns to mow! My last place was f***ED, but thankfully the Real estate agent never saw it! That said a neighbour was drilling s*** at 630 the other weekend, he's lucky i slept through it, otherwise i'd be out there telling him to STFU. |

Started 7:30am this morning. 3 acres of lawn, 2 litres of water, 2 beers, and 3 f***ing hours later, finally done... for another 2 weeks. I'd buy a ride on, but this beats going to the gym at least.

Screw that freaks that mow at 12:00pm on a 32deg day! That was me last weekend. Had to pull in the reinforcment mower from next door. 2 mowers me and my bro no catchers and grass up to shoulder height. Got so bad from the neighbours tree being all over the yard from the SES coming in after the storms. Nieghbour finally got a skip and we moved the tree pieces from all over the yard and got the job done... |

Until the next day when it is half a foot high again.
It's either too hot and dry and it dies, or it's too hot and wet and it grows too fast. |

I don't think 'looking after it' and 'having good soil' makes the grass grow slower... probably faster if anything.
Also, I mow mine every fortnight in summer. 3 weeks is too long. Ideally i'd like to mow it ever 10 days, but weekends are my only real opportunity. |

Actually mr hardware, it was in relation to the second sentence of that post, not the first.
Edit: I can appreciate how u came to read that tho. The gist I got was it was a complaint about grass being difficult to look after - I really don't think it is. last edited by Agent 99 at 17:22:13 14/Dec/08 |

An hour if its short? It takes you 45 mins longer if its long? How long is long? How big is your block of land? What kind of mower do you use?
I have two mowers, a Victa two-stroke (160cc motor) and a Rover 4-stroke (b&s motor). Ah, i get ya agent 99. |

I probably wouldn't do it before 9am. Yeah this, on weekends I try not to make too much noise before 9-10am. I mean it's the weekend ffs who even wakes up before then? Bloody mutants that's who. If you want an actual time then by law it's: Power tools — general From here. So any time after 8am and you're safe legally. edit: Unless you live in a gated community in which case they might have their own private guidelines that you should probably look into. last edited by whoop at 17:55:57 14/Dec/08 |

i bought an aldi mower and its been my only aldi failure
briggs and stratten motor, 3.75hp 4 stroke, just not strong enough if the grass is long, it stalls the mower, so i ahve to do small sections at a time, backwards and forwards i hate it need a two stroke mower to get the job done our block is 750ms |

^^ I had an old mower that I took the throttle governor out of, come up to long grass just flatten that sucker and listen to it pinging its head off. Got through that long grass easy. That mower has since been tossed out (motor was still fine) and I just use a weed eater with a steel blade on it now for really long grass and a line trimmer for shorter grass/edges.

Our block is 450 and it takes about 1/2 hour.
We bought our mower off the old guy that used to own the house. Paid him $50 for a Victa 'Mayfair' 2-Stoke which must be pushing 20+ years old. Best $50 I've ever spent. It starts first time even after sitting idle for months with no use through winter. I had to take it to the mower joint at Moorooka a few years back. I turned it over to check the blades, only to find the blades were basically no longer there and the only thing cutting the grass was the heads of the bolts holding on the 'blades'. I couldn't get them off myself :( Speaking off mowing, I'm gunna grab a beer and fire it up. |

I'm so used to getting up at 6am or earlier that on the weekends I just wake up at that time. Sleeping in for me these days is til 7 or 8am. That being said, I can understand the habit of sleeping in til midday. I never liked when I did it though; hated waking up with the feeling the day was nearly over. |

Victa 'Mayfair' 2-StokeMission, as mowers haven't really progressed in technology very much at all in about 40 years (yes, you could get key start and self propelled in the late 1960's) You'll find your trusty old Mayfair will be possibly pushing 35 or more. Is it a goldy sort of colour, with a catcher that's not quite as long but a bit taller than usual? If its the model of mayfair that i'm thinking of, it'd have the 116 or 125cc 2-stroke? If it is as old as i think it is, if you ever think of parting with it, will you let me know please? last edited by MrHardware at 22:35:18 14/Dec/08 |

Here she is, and you're right, it is a goldy colour.
Could do with a scrub down though :/ I have no idea on the engine capacity though. Please tell me it's worth $1,000's. http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/8660/dsc0221uh4.th.jpg http://imageshack.us/img/butansn.png last edited by mission at 22:38:24 14/Dec/08 |

I mow at 7:01am every Sunday, or Saturday if I don't play golf.
I usually wait to fire the whipper snipper or hedge trimmer up as they are much louder, so they get done last at around 8am :) Most people in our street are all finished mowing by 9am and most of them have kids, so I know they're all awake when I started mowing! Mowing late on a Sunday is the worst time ever, because then you don't get to enjoy your sweet smelling, beautifully mown lawn for the rest of the day. I didn't mow for 3 weeks recently as I'm fighting a nutgrass battle, the whole house was depressing because of the ugliness of the yard. Battle has been won now though, and I mowed this morning. |

nah it's not worth thousands unfortunately. It's a fair example of one, apart from the handle, but that being said lots of them are dead and buried now. A lot of them suffered cracked chassis on the sides halfway between the front and rear wheels.
That one you've got there is an early to mid seventies model, about the same vintage as a HQ Holden. Get yourself a bolt and nut for the handle eh? Also, you can hose mowers down, don't be too afraid. Just don't do it right after you've mowed. Nice magnetic letter D, you've got kids, eh? last edited by MrHardware at 23:15:29 14/Dec/08 |

the 8am rule sucks in summer for early birds but I suppose is fair in the suburbs. but I get up at 3:40 during the week, sleep in till 5:30 on weekends.
also i live on large acreage and use any machinery anytime. brushcutters, dozers, drills, augers etc. usually hit the yard/paddock @ 5 after a cup of tea on weekends go till 9:30ish then have bit of a feed then do normal weekend stuff. Sometimes I might do a slow hour or two during the day but usually dont kick back in till 4pm and go for another hour or two at the most. I can do this 24/7 in the holidays if I stick to XXXX Golds or lites in the arvos and get to bed by 9. if I hit the piss hard I basically lose the afternoon and u shave bout half off the morning. Even after reasonably epic pissups I still am rollin by 6:30 am. you really beat the heat and catch the best and coolest parts of the day. I suppose it boils down to country life vs city life. both have their perks and drawbacks. |

A lot of them suffered cracked chassis on the sides halfway between the front and rear wheels. Well you sure know your mowers. I took the photo from that side because there is a bit of a hole in it on the other side :) Getting a bolt and nut has been on the to-do list for 7 years now. It's getting closer to the top. And yes, I do have kids. You should be on CSI. |

i mowed my lawn on saturday arvo... fkn hot! had to be done... i mowed avbout 4weeks back n the grass was getting near 2m high at my back fence n when it gets that high the old biddies that live around me start complaining that i'm making snake homes. i've told ém a few times that it's a myth that snakes live in long grass & that the snakes are most likely living in thier cielings :D
victa 4-stroke mower. tuff old thing but its losing compression atm. still... cuts down swathes of 2m high grass n grinds thier stems down the to the dirt. metal. as for mowing times... ppl mowing early used to bother me when i was a teen sleeping off intoxications side effects but it really doesn't bother me anymore even though i do like a good sleepin. with my a/c n fan cranking they could whippersnip right outside my window n still my snoring would prolly be louder :D |
