I picked it up over the weekend, its pretty slick.

i have only made it up to the GNR building on the main quest but have been doing a few side quests around megaton. the opening sequence was really enjoyable, i thought it was a really clever way to introduce you to the game world and the control system. i found it pretty hard to actually get going once you are outside the vault though, no money, and just a s***ty bb gun and a baseball bat.

the worst part of the game so far is the dog. its animations are crap. it feels so tacked on at the last second.

You didn't bother to get the pistol off Amata?
Also, you'll be blow away with some of the other areas of habitation, like little lamp light.

oh yeah i did have that pistol.

i have put buckets of points into sneak and have a thief perk, if not two, and i still get busted pick pocketing all the time. how am i doing it so wrong?

Yeah, I was making an effort to keep my dog alive for ages, and keep my AI buddy alive, but they just kept both doing so many stupid things (like running into melee range with a Behemoth as I shoot it with a nuke), and I got sick of the dog's terrible animations, so I just let them both die.

amazing attention to detail in the maps. it's pretty awesome how large the overall map is & yet you rarely see repetition of textures or architecture. the lockpicking & hacking are cool ideas imo. i never really tried pickpocketting as i am trying to keep my karma up this time through... i rekn i'll play it a 2nd time as a nasty person :D

the fat boy + mininuke was a big letdown... it's like lobbing a medicine ball for aiming & doesn't seem to have much of a blast radius. :/ i like using the lasers with vats & feral ghouls though.... bzzzt! crackle pop.

overall i rekn it's a great game with plenty of playable time in it. my biggest bitch about it is the fkn colour gradient lines you see in the sky :( i am running everything on max. settings & you look around the landscape & everything is awesome except for these really obvious colour gradient lines that shift as you move your view. nG!

9/10 goty.

I've started F3 but when I look at the icons on my desktop it's rarely one I click lately.

Has the same prob for me as Stalker. I'm left 3 billion km from home with a rusty knife to defend myself. And I am only attempting first level missions that were given in Megaton. And I have a rifle, 10 different pistols, and there's no bullets anywhere.

But, having said that, it's pretty rewarding if you manage to survive - just involves a lot of save save save, reload reload reload.

i rekn it's really easy to survive without saving :/ sure some of the encounters really carve your health fast...but you can pause the gameplay to heal which makes it pretty easy to stay alive imo. the only real trouble i had was i'd keep forgetting to look out for mines & be moving along quickly & look down n go 'is that a mine?' then BEWM! n my head flys off :D

it's mad how easy it is to lose stuff in the wastelands... i dropped a minigun by accident, right at my feet & it took me ages to find it again coz it had rolled into a thorn bush n was totally hidden.

I got it from a friend the other day and tried to play it.

The opening sequences were pretty damn cool, but after I got thrown into the open, i just couldn't really get into the game. As someone else said, it was pretty annoying trying to find enough bullets to keep going around killing s***.

I had no problem with ammo, my character had HEAPS of it for all the weapons. I even had ammo for weapons I didn't use.

I used VATS a lot and pretty much aimed for the head each time. It is almost pointless to aim anywhere else, sometimes the arm to make them drop the gun.

They are releasing the SDK (G.E.C.K) soon so I'm expecting a few mods to fix it up into a True Fallout Game.

I'm glad that you at least found it romantic. I just find it clunky. It's like a backward step in gaming interface design.

They should have implemented the Maya/BF2 approach where you can hold E and navigate a popup menu with your mouse. Or mouse-wheel to change weapons, or something.

So basically you run out of bullets, you are forced to pause a game in the middle of the action so you can look at an electronic device attached to your arm which is somehow interfaced to your backpack which channels Doctor Who's Tardis in terms of capacity. Is it just me or is it not very well thought-through?

you can bind 8 items to number keys for fast access without pausing.

i like the pipboy as well because of the pause... fallout3 like most bethesda games is more rpg than fps.

it's kinda stupid to complain about how much firepower you can carry... most games are like that... it is a game ya know! :D at least there is an upper limit on weight you can carry based on your strength & perks.

i only ran outta ammo at first when i went crazy on the automatic weapons n sprayed them around fps style. once i realised that the accuracy is s*** when spraying & ya do much better doing a controlled burst while aiming (aim/zoom key held down) or by using vats i never ran outta ammo again.

i have ridiculous quantities of ammo and have the entire game.

And i'm playing on Very Hard (which is still too easy imo).

if you're running out of it you must not be using VATS. Or you're playing with a console controller (haw haw).

Also they're releasing a full editor now so you can expect some serious content from the DIY crowd. That'll increase replayability no doubt.

I know im usually fishing for baits, but I really hated Fallout 3. Was just too stupid. I maxed out lockpicking in the beginning, left the chamber, got into the first town, had a mission to lockpick the f***ing mayor, did so velly snekily, he felt me touching his ass, and about 300 c***s come and gank me

so stupid

Yahtzee's comment of "this seems a hell of a lot like oblivion" is pretty spot on for me as thats the very first thing I though too coming out of the vault. Also note I wasn't a fan of oblivion at all. Perhaps this somewhat diminished the experience for me but while good, I wouldn't of given the game more than a 8.5/10 if I was to review it. Nothing really jumped out and grabbed my attention with the exception of the single quest, which for lack of remembering a title for, "Destroy megaton city". That was quite amazing to watch. The best part of the game for me is/was the whole VATS thing. Slow motioning of you blasting off a head with a laser pistol or rifle is awesome. Even better when you have that "body parts may explode" tallent thingy.

I'm still playing it, at Level 20, doing all the side quests and finding random s***, I think its a awesome game, everything about it is great. It has massive replay value as there's multiple ways to finish every quest and i've been maxing the good karma so would want to try it on the evil side.

Definately best game of the year, though Dead Space might overtake it as it looks wicked.

ok so i sent my dog off to get me some ammo and it dissapeared. great.

I found arafu (sp?) and big town, don't know why anyone is still living in those s*** holes, i'd be living in megaton in a second IRL.

also, i want to find someone to trade all my loot with, the silly bitch at crater supplies has no caps left cause i have all of hers.

Got a bit of a shock when i reached the ending as i didn't expect it to finish so quick and so sudden. I know these games are all about the extras but i wish they put a little bit more thought into their main story line as it was quite lackluster to say the least.

Loved everything else about the game though and vault 112 was awesome.

shogunner try changing the difficulty.

but seriously i am too, i am playing on normal and i don't think i have died as much in this game as any other game in recent memory. when i went to clear out bethesda ruins it took me a few attempts just to get past the first round of baddies.

also, waterworld mod would be awesome.

Its definitely very progressive in terms of difficulty; I'm playing on normal and I died quite a bit early in the game. Eventually you level up enough that you're just about unstoppable though.

hows it play on xbox360 ? or is it really more a pc game ?

I've put many hours onto it on 360 and I think it plays well. The "VATS" pseudo-turn based attacks mean you dont really miss the mouse for aiming, since there's no real aiming involved.

My only real criticism is I'd like more people to give quests that make you explore more. I know from reading on GameFAQs that there's heaps more places I didnt visit; while I dont mind some wandering around, I'd prefer to just be sent to various places by NPCs.

cept for when that super mutant brute is charging you with his minigun & you are all out of action points & jets n all he needs is one more bullet in the head. that's where a bit of mouse aim n fps skill is damn useful. :D imo.

Playing on normal that never really happened to me, I think I used jet like once.

I like how everyone experiences the game differently and goes to different places, its freeform enough that outside the main quest we could barely overlap in how its played.

yeh absolutely. dethon n i started playing at around the same time but he ignored the main quest & did a heap of the side quests... i did a few missions on the main quest & then from about lvl5 to lvl10 just ignored the quests & wandered around the wastelands. now he's like 2 lvls below me but has a house n dog n robot n a horde of weapons n caps... i got my trusty chinese assault rifle n a hockey mask :P

Finally got around to continuing the main quest. Still on the GNR mission though.

Spoiler:
i installed the dish in the tall memorial near the lincoln memorial, it was quite a battle getting through the super mutants, and traversing the subway. I made it back to GNR building without fast travelling, just followed the markers.

Now im finally off to Rivet City! i will probably do more side quests though, help that stupid moira brown bitch do her research, maybe track down The Family.

I am really amazed at the immersion of this game. I want to do everything. I want to explore the wasteland and I want to do all the side quests. This game totally trumps GTAIV in that respect. I never actually wanted to go bowling or go on dates and try and maintain relationships in GTAIV.

Though vehicles would've been pretty rad, i almost shat myself when i stumbled across a motorbike near Arefu. I was very excited until i realised it was just an inert prop. I can't believe they didn't include them, especially with the repair skill, it would just fit into the world so well.

I never played Oblivion, but i am very tempted to check it out now, but
I will probably be dissapointed because its a step back, graphics and gameplay wise?

Motorbikes would be cool, but they're much better off with stealing their fuel tanks and accelerator cables to build a flaming sword.

yeh i totally agree that vehicles would have been cool in fallout3... especially a trailbike... that'd be fukn awesome... bit of motox madness ;) but the motorcycles, cars & buses are still very useful for wasting a whole lot of raiders in one MASSIVE explosion !@$@! orrrjeh.

i'd definitely give oblivion a go domino if you haven't played it before. yes you will be disappointed with the npc models... but some of the monsters in thier right settings are fukn creepy as. the landscape though is awesome & even more open than fallout3. in fallout3 you are still often forced to go in a particular direction by blocking architecture... but in oblivion you can go in any direction at any time. the only thing that blocks you is cliffs that are too steep to climb.

i am even thinking that i'll give oblivion another burl after i get bored with fallout3 (so a fair while yet!) & play it through as a diff character with teh uber settings i can now achieve with my new comp.

Legend. I can't believe it didn't even occur to me to aim & fire outside of VATS since I'd heard so much about it beforehand. Up until I hit GNR yesterday whenever I was out of action points and there's a bunch of super mutants each with 10 health left I used to run like a girly man and hide behind a concrete block...

just finished fallout3 today

really enjoyed the game, but was beyond spewing at the ending :(

i had plans to go do heaps more of stuff, but now i guess, i just wont bother;

i started off as an angel, but as the game progressed, my karma kept slipping (in the stupid dream sequence is there anyway to play through whats requested without your karma taking a hit?)

in the end, i was just killing everyone for xp

was funny hearing 3 dog going on and on about how awesome i was and then all of a sudden im hell, im evil incarnate, im a terrible person, but hes still telling everyone about all the awesome things i did;

Spoiler:
at the end i wanted to live on, i still had so much stuff i wanted to do, sif killing me after i fixed their water for them

Yeah, it ended way too abruptly, but I had a save game in the brotherhood citadel before I started the end mission, so I just went back to that and ran around doing all the other stuff I wanted to do.

Even though the ending itself was a bit weak, Liberty Prime was awesome. Better off dead than Red.

Pro tip Bethesda:
If a game has a companion system that allows you to request companions perform tasks and the final mission calls for a sacrificial task that would not be fatal to some of the companions that you can have with you on that mission, try to come up with something better than "sorry no can do boss" dialogue when you request that companion performs said task. Especially if said companion owes the player character a life debt!

I had Fawkes with me, and I sure felt like he just gave me the fawkes.

Overall the game was quite enjoyable, if a little repetitive towards the end. There wasn't enough justfication for heading out and exploring every bit of the content or even just completing the non-essential side missions.
The upcoming DLC looks meh - previous posts were right about the zero replay value.

He was lagging behind for some reason, Liberty Prime turns around to blow the s*** out of the helicopter thats landing on the bridge. Shoots. And Fawkes explodes.

I've probably clocked up about 100 hours on it now, its one of the few games where I have actually been motivated to see everything and do everything and find everything and go achievement hunting. Can't wait for the DLC, especially the one that raises the level cap and continues the story :)

i finished it the other day, one of the best single player experiences i've had in a long time. the story line/game world was very compelling and the combat was excellent.

i found myself constantly side tracked, looking through old buildings and trying to discover more. would be better if you could ride the motorbikes and where is the mechanical horse?

all my skills went into lock picking, healing and gunz

i pretty much only used the shotgun, and with that cool perk that gave you back all your ap's if you killed your target, i just took out everyone easily

the only guy i coudlnt take out in vats round with the shotty was the super big mutants, who i just nuked
