Hello all,

I'd like some help settling an argument I'm having with someone. While everybody is welcome to provide their thoughts, I'd really like to know the answer from someone who has graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, especially if that was obtained through UNE. A scan of the degree wouldn't go astray either.

What the argument about is what the actual degree obtained upon graduation will say. For example, will the degree of someone who is majoring in Politics and Spanish say: (1) Bachelor of Arts, (2) Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Spanish, (3) Bachelor of Arts (Politics and Spanish) or (4) something else.

It is important to note regarding option (3) that we're just talking about straight Bachelor of Arts degrees, not those that have things in brackets upon enrolment. We're just talking about the generic Bachelor of Arts degrees that let you do lots of things. Therefore, option (3) is about getting majors in brackets on the actual degree that weren't there on enrolment.

Fireblood, is one of your degrees a Bachelor of Arts though and did you enrol in a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) or just a Bachelor of Business? That's what the argument is really about, whether Arts majors are special enough to be included on the final piece of paper.

No the other is in IT (Information Systems).
I didn't enrol specifically in either of the majors, you firstly enrol in the course, and then you choose your major after a year or something.

I sure do!

First one I did a single major in each of Film and TV and Media Studies. Certificate reads: "Bachelor of Arts (Film and Television and Media Studies)"

Second one I did a double major in psychology. Certificate reads: "Bachelor of Arts (Psychology)"

Both were obtained at UQ though:/ Don't know what it'll look like When I get my Honours... probably get a THIRD degree with "Bachelor of Arts (Honours)"... lol... my business card is gonna look HOT.

Huh? What does that even mean? If you mean that the major is not printed on the certificate, you're wrong.

My Degree will say:

Bachelor of Applied Science (Biochemistry) even though I did a Biomolecular Sciences co-major.

I wouldn't worry about whatever the Degree says after the main part: Bachelor of Arts.

Employers know what they are looking for and things in brackets wont mean much, if they really want to know what kind of Arts you did, they will want to glance over your subject list.

My business degee from UQ just reads:

Bachelor of Business (Management)

Even though my majors were Marketing and International Business. I got 2 additional certificates for those majors that say "Spidz has completed a B.Bus(Man) and met the requirements for a concentration in Marketing...etc" It is a formal document, but desn't look like the degree.

I got the same for my Bachelor of Arts. It's a blank degree and I majored in Political Science and Media Studies, so I got the same additional certificates as i did with the Business degree. This was also from UQ

UQ gave me a choice between just "Bachelor of Arts" and "Bachelor of Arts with a major in..." (of course since my degree was in pure wank, I went for the "... with a double major in philosophy" option)

I laugh like hell every time I see the Simpsons episode with Kent Brockman saying that "joblessness is no longer for philosophy majors".

So I'm starting to realise that there is no definitive answer to this argument. That's alright though, as neither of us will win the bet we have riding on the outcome.

What's the chance of someone with a BA getting paid enough to have to pay HECS?
BillyHardball
Posts: 8444

To be honest though, I did my first BA not really expecting to get a job out of it. I did it because I knew I wanted to be at uni but didn't really know what to study. Fortunately I found something I really enjoyed (Film and TV) and so staying at uni was great fun. To make things even better, my degree helped me to get a great job working at a great place with some great people (it was GREAT).

I enrolled in my second Arts degree because it was much easier and less hassle to enroll in that compared to enrolling in Bach of Psyc Sciences, but I end up with the same qualifications after honours. I earned/saved enough money working over the holidays to pay my Honours fees upfront.

Are there any three year degrees these days where you can finish uni and walk into a job paying a decent wage? I was under the impression that to really get anywhere straight out of uni you needed more than a simple undergrad. If that's the case, how is Arts any different from something like Science?

Either way, a degree is a degree and regardless of what it is in, it's something that you'll have for the rest of your life, and is something that a lot of people won't ever have.

Depends, some degrees are more vocational than others. A vaguelly decent Computer Science degree with the right major will probably get you a good (40k+) graduate job. For a a research gig in Biochemistry I'm pretty sure you'll be pushing trolleys and making coffee without additional study.

Even just following the dotcom bust my Bachelor of Computer Science and Technology (Software Development) got me a grad job without too much hassle.

I just handed in my 104 page thesis on Tuesday, and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. Sif Arts students are lazy (although I did it through the school of Psychology). Now I gotta study for f***ing exams as well. A lot of Honours courses are purely thesis, but we have to do f***ing course work as well. Worst year ever.

Billy, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) takes 4 years. At qut if you get a GPA of above 5 you are awarded second class honours and if you get above 6 you have first class honours. (Paveway, it sounds like you have a good head start for this man, sooner the better to get goin!)

Some people spend 3 years studying a half assed degree called a Bachelor of Technology (Civil) which would make you a pretty damned good foreman.

edit:- also, i'd recommend getting your foot in the door with business rather than arts, cause its all pretty damned straght foreward judging from the 1st year elective i did in my last semester (quite hillarious in fact after 4 years of civil)

It will probably be a Bachelor of Arts {Major, Major} but the perenthisis depends on the degree type.

Also, the only people who bag Arts degrees are people who haven't done one, or majored in something stupid like Basketweaving.

They'd probably end up on more. My fiancees sister just got offered 65k for a grad role as a Chemical Engineer. Admidantly moving to Perth alone should qualify her for 65k p/a but the crazy girl loves it there.

A vaguelly decent Computer Science degree with the right major will probably get you a good (40k+) graduate job.

And that's assuming you're some sort of retard. Most CS graduates who pulled a finger out are generally offered 50k+ and that was two years ago.

Are there any three year degrees these days where you can finish uni and walk into a job paying a decent wage?

Most degree holders who didn't go around sucking for their 3 years walk out into a decent paying job. Although, it really depends on what you define as decent paying.

What's the chance of someone with a BA getting paid enough to have to pay HECS?

I find that pretty amusing considering that half of your degree come straight out of Arts programs, and I don't think anybody could say that your strength was on the CompSci part of your degree. There are multiple professional streams within Arts programs.

f***s me.. ? i thought honors was something you choose to do after

it's 4 years no honors i'm pretty sure

At UQ, QUT, UTS and USyd, Honours is included in the 4 year program. However, if you don't get a high enough GPA you graduate without honours. Also, I think some Engineering projects allow people to do course work in their 4th year, but they also graduate without honours.

Not sure which courses you're referring to in your last bit typo, but to add to that, if you do BPsycScience, you have to get a GPA of > 5.0 BEFORE 4th year to be able to be eligible for honours. If you get < 5, you go into the "Pass" stream and end up with just the bachelors degree. If you get > 5, you get honours, and the class depends on your GPA for just your honours year. I did psyc through Arts, so I had to get a GPA of > ~5.5 to get into the honours year for Psyc. My honours class will depend on my GPA for this year only.

Well in IT it meant 1 a year, in Engineering it worked out to 1 a semester.

Business communication/english subjects seemed to be a popular choice to get 3's in for both engineering and it students.

A friend doing double degree Maths & IT got straight 7's and a 3 in the English subject... they shoulda made him stay forever until he got a 7 in it to.

If you can't at least get 50% then you should have done some work...most courses are designed to make it relatively easy to get a 4.
