I ebay'ed as well. But I don't have the budget of a school or university so I wondered if anyone knew of where to get a cheap alternative.

woah what the s***... how expensive are these bad boys!?

http://corabike.cart.net.au/cat/35042.html

edit: DIY IKEA bike rack maybe? http://www.lifehacker.com.au/tips/2008/02/15/diy_ikea_bike_rack.html

i see what you mean about the price though, these companies seem to be charging an obscene amount of money for a few rails of metal

They look like high quality council ones though taggs, they're built to take a beating.

Got any walls to drill into? We hang all of ours up on these hook systems, works a treat.

Very cheap.

jeebus christ, the thing is you just know that councils etc are paying these sort of prices and probably dont have a problem with it.

For a metal work shop, theres gotta be about what? 1 hour labour and f*** all materials cost?, and then charge $680 bucks.

3 of our bikes have been standing on these for many years. They can't be too expensive.

Lynx, they are kids bikes, they don't have them. At the moment they all lie on their side. I want to stand them all up.

I guess a quick and dirty pine rack will do.

Would have hoped I could have bought it for cheap instead

If you don't want to secure them, you could always just get four bricks - one for each bike. Brick goes under the pedal - remember the freehub only goes one way, so place the brick so that when the bike tries to fall over, the crank arm can't rotate.

Of course, this won't stop them toppling with strong gusts of wind or if they're knocked hard.

Option 2 if you don't want to lock them is you want two triangle legs, and a cross-bar between the two - like this:
http://zero.racetime.com.au/photos/IMG_1640.jpg

Of course, if you want them locked then yeah, you want a proper rack. And there's no point buying a cheap rack that they can just cut through like an aluminium can cheaper than they can cut through the lock.

Other thing you might consider is two hoops concreted into the ground - one bike on either side of it.

It would just be quicker and easier for me to build it, than to ask my hubby to.

The bikes are kids bikes, not mountain bikes, so they need to e secured by the wheels, not the seat or something higher

Why does it matter what size they are? You adjust the height accordingly, or don't even do that and they just hang off the ground.

Though as said, you haven't said whether or not you plan to lock them.
Kat

No, no plan on locking them At the moment they are on their side on the ground. They take up a lot of area which I need to walk in. I want them to simply stand up in another area. They need to be able to stand up without leaning on a wall

hose reel holder.. (might only work if they're boys bikes), hang them up and get them out of the way.. can also work as a way of keeping the bikes away from the kiddies when you don't want them zooming around..

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3152/2567300366_862e29dd44.jpg Obiviously you can get much less fancy ones.. just the simple loop on the front would do

what about normal kick stands then?

otherwise here's some reasonably priced options

You could probably use a couple of blocks of wood and some decent thickness dowel to build something. kick stands sounds the best way to go though ?

just weld your own up
a bit of angle iron and a bit of RHS and top it off with a bit of cold-gal and you'll have a pretty decent bike rack.

I made up my own for the kids bikes a couple of years ago, bend some metal tubing, welded it and got it powder coated at work. Cost me like $15 and about an hour.

Unfortunetely you are a week too late kat. We just threw ours out, we offered it to the family next door and a few other people but no one wanted it. So it went to the dump
