today some dragons riding a ninja broke the screen on my k608i today.

What's a good phone to get on the cheap?

I only use it for a few calls and mainly texting.

Don't know if it matters, but it's gotta be compatible with a 3 prepaid sim card.

Bah is starting at the least suitable phone for what you've requested and is working his way to the useful phones. Just pick up a 2nd hand oldschool greyscale nokia - there's enough of them floating around in the world. Look for like an 8210 or something really small - I still reckon that was the best phone I ever owned.

hah, i agree trog, i still got my 8250, and 8310, which i still use every now and then as backup. i got a 6300 not too advanced but has basic features which is all i need. and they're built tough.

You might be needing a 3G phone with that 3 simcard you've got there.

Brisbane based store, good prices if you want to buy outright. Just about to buy a new phone for the mrs from there.

My Motorola recently stopped working.. cant hear any voices so speakers gone.. now its a useless texting machine. Had it for about 15 months, bought outright from ebay.

The nokia 6300 gets a good review on here..

http://www.cnet.com.au/mobilephones/phones/0,239025953,339274697,00.htm

$210 from the 'protip' website.

Cheers for that too hardware... I'll probably be getting my next phone there.

Are there any good alternatives to the nokia 6300 and same sorta price range? sony peoples?

A little more than 200 off ebay (i think) will get you a nokia 6500 classic. Thin phone, gig of internal memory, small and 3G. Had one for a while. Quite nice.

it's locked, but doesn't it cost $20 (or less) to unlock a phone from e'n'e, or if you know how, free

cheaper phones ftw!

It's good to hear you like the 6500.. i rkn it looks pretty sweet. This website says the 6300 is more user friendly though.

6500:
Like a lot of Nokia's new "style" phones, the 6500 Slide generates an initial "wow" reaction -- but unlike the Nokia 6300 in particular this quickly wears off. What you're left with is a fairly good phone -- if a little clunky -- that is only relatively useful and user-friendly.

It didn't generate any wow for me. The classic did coz its so damn thin. Also, I got a bronze one coz the black looked boring. Also, 6300 and 6500 uses almost the same OS (same actual symbian version).

don't get a 6500 (classic/candy afaik). unless you have extra super big f***ing hands, this will feel like a giant's cock that you cannot use to please yourself

edit: long-ish phone with the buttons right at the bottom

Wtf are u smoking. The 6500 classic is better for small hands. Maybe the slide is big, but the classic has a small keypad and is a thin phone.

exactly my point. small keypad at the very bottom of the phone, which is basically unusable because you've gotta hold the phone as well as type. go try it out, you'll see i'm right

Err, I owned one for over 6 months. The keypad was fine, just the button feedback took a bit to get used to.

What you were saying is u need massive hands to use a 6500C whereas its the opposite.

i got an e71 about a month ago purely for the qwerty. After having a terrible motorola razr3 or whatever for a few years it is nice to be back on nokia's team.

so you would recommend the e71?

I wouldn't be able to recommend it because I don't use many of the features available. As far as the basics are concerned it is all sweet.

I have been driving around for work heaps lately and the GPS is pretty good. Google earth, browsing, and youtubes are pretty much the only internet stuff I have used.

Only thing that I would be worried about is that if you have fat fingers the keys will be too small. So much faster to type s*** out though.

i was deciding between e71 and iphone
e71 apparently has really good battery life and it can handle long gps use...
also anything else u might want in a phone

iphone - there are no options for any of the phone/sms side of it such as call timers or sms forwarding , copy and paste when u think about it how often do you actually use these features ? you forget you dont have them after using one for a while because your so distracted flicking the menus around with your finger its amazing how fast it is ... most of the time

id really like an iphone but its easy to crack the screen and its nearly $400 to get it repaired by apple (16gig)

basically i dont really want a phone that will break just by walking in to the side of a desk or dropping when intoxicated :P
the iphones made of plastic and glass

iphone $850~ ? + unlocking fee ( $80-150~ ) if u need it
e71 $550~

difference in price but they can both do the same thing..

well at the moment unless you jailbreak your iphone there is not any way of loading gps maps on to it so its downloading maps MOST of the time (it does store some maps as you look at them) but i think tomtom is creating software to be sold on itunes

the nokia has a lot more "phone" features if u dont need an awesome music/video player also the iphone has cool apps but at the moment its just 5 min of fun show off to your fiends stuff, its got potential though

these phone were made for totally different purposes anyway lol
e71 - work
iphone - play DONT FKN DROP IT

Yes uber battery on the e71. I've used the GPS for about 10 hours without a car charger.
