I think this VLC release is major enough to warrant a thread:
The VideoLAN Team is pleased to announce the release of VLC media player 0.9.2 - Grishenko. Resulting of 2 years of development, it features many new functionalities, including a new interface for Windows and Linux.

A quick look at the changelog shows that a major feature is the long awaited fullscreen controls in the Windows and Linux ports, on top of the mentioned "new interface" as shown in my screenshot below.

To be honest I'm not so sure the new controls are aesthetically pleasing:

Thank f*** for that. That was my biggest issue with VLC. I'll give this a whirl when I get home, see if it can replace MPC for me.

Never been a big fan of vlc for several reasons which it looks like by in large they've now fixed. My two biggest issues with it before where no controls in full screen mode and not being able to skim through a video in realtime. Still prefer the MPC interface and the fact that the full screen controls only come up when you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen but at least vlc in general is now on par as a player.

Very similar to sound recorder/media player from very, very old versions of windows (3.xx etc)

I liked the old one, so hopefully you can use the old skin, but I doubt it since from memory they had to rebuild the interface shizzal inorder to get the full screen controllage. So obveously that interface was thrown together quickly to make it work and will work on a better interface skin in the future. Just looks a little 'uni assignmenty'

Fantastic player tho :D

Without having a very good look through the options two things that annoyed me about VLC is that you can't mouse over the control bar in fullscreen mode and you can't use the mouse wheel for volume up/down.

Haven't tried it in a while has this stuff been implemented? That what you are all excited about?

So in this version, can I put my Mac to sleep again using the remote?

Anyone else having the problem where the fullscreen controls won't disappear when the mouse does, after no activity?

Quick note for mac users, nothing much has changed (mac vlc has had fullscreen controls for ages) and they haven't changed the look of the interface (thank god looking at that screenshot). However, the preferences is now a crapload better and easier to navigate. Hopefully they will streamline the streaming wizard next version.

whoop, click View, Media Info, and check out the Statistics tab. I think that's what it is talking about.

Alright not only is the new interface complete balls, but the program is buggy. I tried launching a video, but where the hell is VLC? It's in memory but nowhere on screen to be found. That's it, I'm uninstalling and reverting to v0.8.6.

Such a step backwards for a program, it was so good!

Nope not in there.

Ended up having to End-task each one manually, then try again.

That new skin looks like complete ass so I'm gonna keep using the old version, plus it works fine so there's no need to change.

MPC works too well for me to really worry about most other programs. Its simple and I know where everything is. Only thing I use VLC for and find it superior to other players is when i'm trying to run a DVD. I love it for that.

It's running HD movies on my system like absolute s***. It's jerky as f***, uses about 50% more CPU than MPC, and it looks all aliased. Totally f***s up if I try to skip through it too. Fail.
