The other night I could smell electrical burning and then the XBox overload switch clicked off. When I went to reset and switch it back on, it shut down again.

I ruled out the extension cable by plugging the XBox directly into the power point so I am pretty sure psu on Xbox is kaput.

This is the second time that a psu has failed, although the XBox does get worked pretty hard i.e. we use it every night just about, and the last failure was 2 years ago approx.
Still, seems a bit dodgy to me.

Anyway my question is does anyone have a suggestion on a reliable place to get it repaired. I got it chipped and repaired at Blade (probably part of the problem!) last time and as they are now defunct any other places that are good.

The new PSU cost me about $100 from memory plus installation fee (but I could be wrong). If it is gonna cost me that much I am thinking about getting a 360.
Can you do the same thing i.e. stream off the network with a 360?
Is it as good, or should I just get the old one fixed/or a new old one?

you can buy 2nd hand modded xbox pretty cheap.

It may have improved now but when I looked in to it watching what you want on a 360 is a real hassle compared to an xbox1

I used Orb to stream to my X360 from my PC, uses a Winamp plugin.

I did format an external USB drive using Macdrive software, x360 then reads it, that worked ok. Played HD stuff awesome (Once converted to WMV, used an app called Encode360 to do the work).

Honestly, with the way it caches, its not worth it.

Buy a Popcorn Hour ! (Or another Xbox for XBMC)

Why dont you just go buy a 2nd hand xbox from EB for $70 and switch the PSU's over.

I've got one I'll sell you with an xecutuer2 chip etc, wireless controllers
I've only -ever- used it to stream media off my network but I've recently acquired an Apple TV to do the job

I might also have the composite cables for it, make me an offer

Kind of unrelated, but do you even need to chip the old Xbox? Can't they be pretty easily soft-modded?

Not sure if the soft mod supports the internal HD replacement.

Really if your not prepared to get your hands dirty modding an xbox, best stay out of this type of gear and buy purpose built.

Its not an insult, some hate doing that stuff, like Term, I heard he pays those guys at the traffic lights with wipers to clean his bike helmet visor.

http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30-minutes.html

skip the bits about hacking your xbox, just do the bits that relate to copying the software onto your xbox

or there is faqs in the download and on the internets

Using tversity i can stream any format of media to my 360 over the network with out any modding of the console at all. Just install tversity, add your media folder, and you're done.

Along with the media remote, tversity has pretty much removed any reason to mod the console.

Plus, it's got the upgraded Video out quality over the xbox (though, on alot of the media i stream, that doesn't matter a whole lot).

giririsss, do you need a HD in the 360 for this (I guessing you do to copy and store tversity on) or will the Arcade version with 256meg memory card do the trick?

Also, do you need the media remote or will the standard controller be suitable?

my xbox died recently aswell
it loads fine, but then locks up after about 10mins.
fans all seem to be running so not realy sure, might be undervoltage or something worse, but either way i didnt bother with it.

I have installed XBMC for Windows on a old P4 Mobile Laptop.

works great, and now supports h264, i had so many pains trying to get the 360 do just "do" easily what the old xbox did without an complex setups and messing around (post most recent updated to 360 excluded).

Mission: No you don't need any hard drive for tversity. Forgot to add, while the 360 does do caching some times, i presume this is to the ram, not the hdd, but read into it. Though i don't really see the point of buying a 360 with out the hdd.

Tversity runs on your pc, where you've stored all your media, and the 360 will detect it as a media server, and just stream the media over the network.

All codecs are handled by tversity it self, not the 360 i believe, so as long as tversity can decode the stuff, you can stream it. And i've not run across anything that tversity can't decode, mkv, h264, xvids. i presume with tversity using ffdshow you can even force subtitles, but never tried.

Update:
Checked the google and found some dude at Morningside who said "bring it round" and after trying a replacement PSU he said it was pretty much rooted (capacitor burnt out) and so I have teed up another one through him for a very reasonable price, softmodded new machine with my old (tested and reconditioned) DVD drive for $70.

PM me if you want his details as he seemed to know what he was doing and was really nice about the whole thing. Much rather give him business than EB or Cash Converters etc.
