Toshiba have let us know their on-the-go gaming laptop, Qosmio X300, is now available in Australia.
Toshiba’s latest multimedia beast is jam-packed with the latest high-powered components, including a top of the line graphics card, lightning-fast DDR3 RAM, two Hard Drives and flaming looks for maximum entertainment and game performance from any battlefield.

"The nature of today’s gameplay environment is competitive, fast-paced, and exhilarating so we’ve created the Qosmio X300 to bring power, performance and portability to gamers in a way that will revolutionise the gaming landscape," says Anthony Geronimo, Product Manager, Toshiba ISD.
While I'm not too sure about the language used in the press release (or the "flaming design for a fiery experience"), the price-point and cashback offer do sound cool.

The Qosmio X300, housed in fierce fire-red tribal casing, backlit with red LEDs and dressed with a glossy black keyboard, is designed to unleash competitive instincts for battle.
I chuckled :)

Actually, a "gaming laptop" is cool in concept, but really a bad idea in execution. A desktop is always going to be easier to upgrade, cheaper to buy and provide a much better gaming experience. That's not to say that you can't play games on your laptop, I do all the time, but buying one "for gaming" seems a waste to me. Imagine the desktop you could get for $4k?!

I think if I was going for a portable gaming machine, I'd just get a micro-atx case and a small lcd monitor and a decent bag to suit. I mean, you have to lug around a full keyboard and mouse anyway, and it's not like you will be playing any decent games on the train or anywhere that requires use of the battery.

You can put together a mid-range micro-atx system for about the same cost as a full size one, albeit upgrade choices and part selections can be pretty limited by the case design. And considering the sheer size of every gaming laptop I have seen (they are always luggable and bulky, rather than conveniently portable) there's little difference in the effort required to transport it.

Mantra speaks truth

When you get into high end performance and gaming laptops they start to get very bulky and heavy and also gaming kills your battery really quick. Almost defies the point really.

Why do laptops cost so much compared to desktop computers?

guessing cause the parts are different and not made in such quantities? because you gotta buy a battery/kb/mouse all built in? because of all the extra software crap manufacturers package with it?

I freaking LOVE my Dell XPS1730. It's a gaming laptop, 2.4ghz duel core, 4gig ram (like not 1066 though), dual sli vid cards (1gig total).
Yes its bulky, but i got a good carry bag for it, and rarely take it anywhere.
I have taken it to a few tutorials for my grad study, and i was worried it was gonna be huge and annoying. I had like 6 hours of tutes that day, so i had to have it plugged anyway, and i just made sure i had a seat near a powerpoint. It was f***ing awesome, could take notes on the fly, make changes to calcuations etc. Didn't find that it was too big or anything.
I have also used it on a flight back from fiji, and got almost 3 hours of tv ep watching, and the extra headphone jack came in handi for my gf.
Battery life is really my only gripe and only in areas that don't have power (like an airplane)

Pretty good for a $4k laptop. But you first need a) $4000 spare and b) a reason for not wanting to get a desktop to game with which easily surpasses it like Mantra pointed out.

Also are they trying to make a selling point out of the case or something?

I'd prefer my desktop over a laptop anyday.

+ I like to be able to customize and upgrade my computer, and also not have it look like everyone else's. Ie, same case etc, I like to have it looking unique.

like I couldnt buy those mini Atx lanbox's, i'd rather make my own... because chances are heaps of others will have the same thing, and thats s*** tbh.

now that you can't salary sacrifice notebooks, gaming laptops are too expensive.

Since I travel 2 weeks out of the month and I'm an obsesive gamer, I need a gaming laptop to stay sain.

If I did not travel, then I would just stick with the Desktop.
