So I arrived in Europe and thought, hey, I should get some puzzle game like Sudoku or something so when I am on a train or on a flight I wil have something to do. Fire up App Store and it tells me to get f***ed, because I'm registered for the Australian store.

I havent played around with it much to see if there is a way around it, had a quick google but cant find anything. Just wondering if any other travellers have found this out.

f*** its lame though.

sure is, we regularly buy US itunes cards off ebay to keep topping up my gf's account so we can get the US shows at the same time as the rest of the world

my advice;

ssh -L 127.0.0.1:3128:proxy.ausgamers.com:3128 proxy.ausgamers.com (or whatever your .au proxy server is)
then setup your http/itunes proxy to 127.0.0.1:3128 and enjoy being a super leet haxor

if you buy a pre paid card in Europe you would possibly have to make another account for it to work. you can create an account just with a pre paid card so you dont have to enter credit card info.

the problem is that you need a computer to do this and you need to sync the phone with that new account logged in.
when you sync your iPhone that account you created will override the authorization for the account you have used for all your other apps on the phone and then they would possibly stop working.

if you have have free apps you could just dl them again on the pc and sync back but if you have music from the store as well.. you might have a bit of trouble with the authorization as well

Cool, welcome to f***ed-in-the-ass-ville, Apple style.

Another awesome thing that just happened with my iPod Touch:

Just landed in Athens. Had the worst f***ing possible day imaginable; at this point I couldn't believe it could get worse, but a) it was just about to, and b) it got s***loads worse later on.

Decided that, after all the bulls*** of the day, I would just get in a taxi instead of trying to brave the Athens public transport system (which I hear is excellent). By this point it was 10pm and I was ready to snap and just wanted to get to my hotel.

I got in the taxi and realised almost instantly the dude didn't speak much, if any, english. I said the name of my hotel and got a sort of blank look, so I thought "thank s*** I saved all the details in my ipod mail thing", busted it out and leaned forward to show him.

Just as I did that he accelerated randomly and I bumped something and lost whatever I was looking at. The driver then goes "Oh, [random greek word]!" as if realising what hotel I meant.

This, as it turned out, was really f***ing fortunate, because what happened on the iPod was I'd accidentally hit the 'delete' button on that email. No big deal, you might say, it'll just be in the trash.

Well sure! It was in the trash. But with the actual body of the email deleted. So basically, unless this guy ACTUALLY knew where the f*** my hotel was, I was stuck without any details.

Now, obviously I should have printed a hard copy. I can't BELIEVE I didn't, because I normally am anal mcloony about this sort of thing, but still, I figured that, worse case, my trusty ipod would at least have the address.

What a f***ing piece of s***. Seriously, this thing is so classic Apple Version One Point Oh its not even funny. If you buy one of these things and expect to use it as anything but a toy at the complete and utter mercy of Apple then you're going to be screwed.

hmm that does suck, but are you sure it's not just because you haven't setup mail correctly? I just went offline and tried it and I was still able to access an entire email in my trash. If you go to gmail help for iPhone, it'll tell you what settings to put your mail settings on. The help page makes it pretty clear that if you dont put the settings correctly the mail app won't behave as designed. You can also change it so you have to confirm before it trashes a message.

Cool, welcome to f***ed-in-the-ass-ville, Apple style.

Another awesome thing that just happened with my iPod Touch

I'm new to this Apple ass-ville thing and not liking it so far. I bought a Touch yesterday. Since my brother was able haggle a bit and get the price of his down when the other day, I thought I'd give it a go at JBHifi.

"What's the best price you can do?"
"The shelf price is the lowest, Apple sets the prices and there's nothing we can do".
"I just saw it elsewhere for $XX"
"No problem, we'll lower the price to match!"

Ooook.

Highlights:

1. No Generic Mass Storage Device support. Why not? Wouldn't people be willing to buy the more expensive model to have extra capacity if they knew they could use the device as a USB drive too? How could Apple possibly lose?

2. No PDF viewing except through the browser while online. Apparently people view it offline by jailbreak + ftp + localhost web server + browse to localhost and view PDF?

3. On-screen keyboard keys a little tiny - I don't even have fat fingers and I keep hitting the wrong letters 10% of the time. Landscape mode is better, but only helps in Safari.

4. Long boot up time (~20 sec)

5. Paying for a firmware update. WTF? The device hasn't even been on the market long enough to start charging for legacy support.

6. Developers have to pay to get their apps into the Store, and Apple gets 30% of the earnings anyway?

7. Need a mac to develop software.

8. Half the device's features aren't available through the SDK.

So yes, this is Apple being a control freak. If they can't think of a particular unintended feature/use of their devices that they can milk money out of, they'll f***ing make sure that it won't even be remotely possible through normal means.

Hey Apple: ..|.

Time to jailbreak and get some real software on there.

EDIT: To be fair, the device is fine overall as it does what I bought it to do: music + HTTPS webmail over WiFi at uni. The Apple store was quite painless - the first warning it had when signing up was that signing up in Australia will only allow you to use the store from within the country :P

because I am too lazy to read these issues while dealing with other iPhone customers changing app store location is easy.

Find a PC with iTunes on it log into the iTunes store change store location to the country you are in sync iPhone stop crying.

edit; the issues people have with their iPhone are simple ones you all just simply need to blow a good 5 hours reading the 500+ page user guide in pdf format

My resolve against Apple was starting to wane, but this thread has it strong again!

Since day 1 Ipod/Apple have been super lame in regards to customisability etc, using it's own file format etc.

Yeh here's what happens, after some playing around - if you delete or move a message, it basically just moves the headers - it doesn't move the body with it.
Find a PC with iTunes on it log into the iTunes store change store location to the country you are in sync iPhone stop crying.
Yeh right, that's what I should have to do. First of all, its f***ing gay that we're still stuck in this bulls*** world where these companies are screwing us left right and centre because of the stupid notion that geographic boundaries should define what things cost on the Internet. This system is ONLY in place so Apple can charge Australians more than they charge Americans for the same thing because of their f***ed dollar. Aren't you sick of it yet?

Secondly, its lame that this is a setting I have to change by logging into a PC. The whole, f***ing, point of this device is that it is a wireless replacement for my f***ing PC! And then all of a sudden I want to use it wirelessly and I can't do it without a PC being next to me.

Even ignoring the DRM stuff...

1. You're in europe
2. You're registered to use the Australian store
3. You're on the internet

Is it so damn hard to, I dont know, just connect to the Australian store?! They know you're Australian, the credit card you've registered to pay with is Australian, who cares where the specific IP address you have is located.

something I found today which I must say is f***ing rad.
I got an iphone on Tuesday after much hassle to try and find somewhere that would sell it out-right and not on some 24 month plan.

anywho, http://www.apple.com/itunes/remote/

I have an apple tv hooked up to the tv in the living room and I can now control it from my iPhone rather than the little white remote

after seeing this again i was thinking you should be able to access your itunes account. What sover said, if you log in to itunes on a pc and set the itunes store to australia and sync your ipod/phone you should be able to access the store again.

also check for any timezone settings on the itouch/phone and turn them off

bump

I just gave up and plugged my ipod into laptop to try and get some new apps. After trying to install something, iTunes told me that I could only buy from the Australian store, but then redirected me to that store (even though it looked the same as the one I was currently on). I then downloaded the app I wanted (a Sudoku thing) and tried to sync it - at which point it told me it would blow away all the Apps and the data on my ipod that were currently installed.

Is that a joke? I mean, I can't believe that is a serious warning. If you install apps on your iPod/iPhone via the on-device App Store, then try to install them from iTunes later, the iTunes ones will completely blow away all the stuff you've already got??

I'll pre-fix this with i'm almost exclusively a mac user.. (lol i drink the kool-aid), i don't have an iphone or itouch just a couple of laptops and an ipod..

But i have heard there are issues accross the board, iphone and itouch re installing anything via the wifi/3g.. the devices seem to respond a helluva lot better and there is are reports of much greater device stability when the device has all its aps synced to it via a computer..

Also re the wiping of data apparantly each and everytime an app gets an update applied the iphone or itouch will make a backup of that app before its updated incase it crashes or its buggy or something.. It keeps making backups each and every time an app is updated and keeps the updates ON THE DEVICE, so wiping all the data might only be app specific and it might be replacing the backups of the app

That and im not sure if apple have gotten the 'cloud' app store and the computer store sync'd because i have read stuff about apps getting half uploaded to the cloud store and basically screwing the devices when they try to download the corrupt file thinking its the real deal..

there's a setting to make it not do that, I had to do it the first time I brought the iphone to work after having set it up first at home
