Following Activision and EA's little squabble over the interoperability of their music peripherals for Guitar Hero and Rock Band on PS3, Sony have stepped in as a voice of reason in the war that was quickly filling many living rooms with more and more plastic crap.

The official PlayStation Blog boasts that they have been working with various rhythm game developers including Neversoft, Harmonix and Konami to ensure that the periphs for their upcoming games all play nice.
For the most part, this means that the titles with musical peripherals will work with the other’s software. A few specific examples include: Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software.

And yes, you guessed it, Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution.

Conversely, Rock Revolution’s drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2
The news also confirms that Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour will both support the PS3's SingStar microphones. However, whether or not either game will receive an Aussie release is still unconfirmed but it's good to see the console manufacturer stepping up to settle the differences and it will be interesting to see if similar mediation occurs on the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

Excellent news

Now if we could just get cross-console compatibility, that would be even better

Aww, I wanted Trog to release this little gem ....

Anyway, a good way to make excellent news out of something that should have always been the case. *cheer*

Any word on whether this announcement means Sony/Activision are going to finally let Harmonix release the patch for Rock Band 1 that lets Guitar Hero guitars work with it on ps3?

The blog didn't confirm that, but did hint at it.
We’re still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly.
