I'm going in oct/nov. Any suggestions?

I want somewhere nice to chill out for 3-4 days at the end of the trip, near tokyo but also pretty relaxed and remote. ie mountains/islands etc.

also i am going to have okanamiyaki for breakfast lunch and dinner.

If you have a Japan rail pass just hit up anywhere that is within like a 1-2 hour trip of Tokyo :p, ie go to Kyoto and check out some of the sights... or I dunno, go to Hiroshima so you can have awesome okonomiyaki - also miyajima island is a rad way to end a trip to Japan. Could always hit up Fuji-Hakone area and check out the lake ashi ropeway.... or just look for hashiriya

also seconding eat dolphin with more eat whale than dolphin.

sadface, i won't be there for TGS. But i will definately hit up hiroshima for the japancake. i hear they put noodles in them?

best place in brisbane for okonamiyaki is sai cuisine on brunswick st.

yeah, they serve em with noodles and there was a freaking build just dedicated to okonomiyaki places - I've never tried that sai place as I've been trying to make it myself, will have to give it a shot

but yeah, even though the atomic bomb dome and s*** is depressing as hell, hiroshima was rad to visit - great food, friendly people, relatively easy to get around and travel to miyajima

are the locals still totally ignorant of WWII and Japan's role in it, or it all that water under the bridge now?

This may seem like a stupid question, but how's the sushi?

I f***ing love the stuff, are there many legit sushi bars over there accessible to westerners?

They do some crazy apprenticeship apparently where they can't even touch the fish for 3 years... would be nice to eat at a joint that does fresh nigiri and sashimi and the like from the chef, not 10,000 serves of chicken and avocado roll on a train.

f***ing rad imo.

I really can't stomach any 'average' sushi over here since coming back - and yeah you can pretty much hit up timed all you can eat sushi places and s*** - pretty well known one along shinsaibashi in osaka that I went to.... thinking about it some 200yen sushi from train stations was pretty much better than a lot I've had over here.

Koopz - there is a decent focus on the japanese role in WWII however just like anywhere else there is always going to be the local spin on things - for the most part it didn't seem like stuff dodging the blame of the war so much as the whole 'we have melting children' element

Hey, did a year in Japan on exchange, been back a couple of times since.

I would suggest hitting up Nikko, bout 2 hours from tokyo and has a lot of beautiful shrines and scenery, lots of trational ryokans to stay in.

I concur though, Okonomiyaki FTW!
Love that stuff.

Wrote a bit of a rant in this thread last year, its all still current info, PM if you have any questions, will help where I can

i was thinking about Nikko, would that be a good spot to chill out for a few days at the end of the trip? is it REALLY touristy?

yeh the last thread was me.

I followed aPs' tips pretty much to the letter and had an awesome time. If I had one piece of advice in hindsight I would say scratch Tokyo and stick to places like Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka. Waaaaay nicer. People and locales. Next time I'll be scratching Tokyo off the list completely. and dont think just buy the JR pass.

Glad to hear you had a good time Rolo Tomasi!

Nikko is a bit touristy, but it is still a sleepy town, but probably a bit more accessible than other sleepy towns (more english signs etc)

But when I have been there, outside of the tourist attractions (all on one big hillside in the trees) the rest of it seemed fairly quiet.

You could head down to Izu in shizuoka, have a search on the net, its a good seaside resort area.

Personally though, the beaches bite the big one compared to here, id hit up mountains.
